Jesus instructed the eleven and the 120 to wait in Jerusalem for the baptism of the Holy Spirit for power. Four of the power gifts had to do with hearing God's voice. Peter had a problem with knee jerk reactions that were not of God, like when he wanted to build tabernacles for Jesus, Moses and Elijah. He thought a lot of himself and frequently went overboard. Like when he swore he would never deny Jesus, then did.
I wouldn't be so quick to judge Peter. That requires some unwarranted self exaltation. If the result of the lot was from the Lord then there can't be any arguement.

If Peter had made a mistake there, Paul would have had no problem correcting it later when he came along. But he didn't. Instead we see clearly that he accepted and acknowledged the new Apostle as marks shared that scripture. Have a hunch there are reasons in the Lord why the new Apostle had to be chosen before the Holy Spirit was poured out....maybe to seal him in the apostleship together with the others with the firstfruits of the Spirit....they were to rule over the twelve tribes of the Israel of God together as judges....or reasons like that.

And just to say in general, anyone can be in error, make a mistake here and there........if it gets corrected in good time then all is well. The problem is when mistakes/errors etc are not corrected and remain. That is when the rot begins to set in from it....that leaven begins to rise and overtake the lump. It is over time that even a small veering off and error in direction widens into being completely off course.

LOL
No, Peter WAS the Bishop of Rome.
It's history.

And infallibility has nothing to do with this discussion.

But yes, he was chief.
BTW, James was the Bishop of Jerusalem.
Well, to my understanding all the 12 apostles had a "bishoprick" (what I glean from Acts 1:20)...that was their spiritual gift. It was to be in the simplicity of Christ, not quite such a formal designation as in the way of the world set in concrete and institutionalized instead of being in spirit.

As I have previously stated, a man can be more than one thing at the same time. But God can't perfect what isn't there. Peter was the most brash disciple but also the most sensitive to the Spirit. He loved and followed the Lord more than the others did. His zeal for Jesus was greater than the others. As such he saw things before the others.

Like when the Lord showed Peter that the Gentiles were not to be seen as unclean in and of themselves...that in every nation those who feared Him and did righteousness were already accepted of Him. Peter was shown that before the others.

Actually it was a formal designation.
Eventually the Apostles settled down...
James became the Bishop of Jerusalem and Peter became the Bishop of Rome.
There were 5 main areas for the new Christian religion:
JERUSALEM
ROME
ALEXANDRIA
ANTIOCH
CONSTANTINOPLE

Each area had a Bishop that was in charge of that area.
They were known as popes....the bridge between man and God. (Pontefice)
Eventually, in the 600's the office was given to the Bishop of Rome
because it's the office that Peter held. To this day the Bishop of Rome is the Pope.
The term papa means dad and was used affectinately for all 5 of the Bishops/popes.
But the official title was Bishop.

Bishop means an overseer and is found in Acts 20:28
The Greek word for overseer is episkopos

All I know sister, is that institutionalization of the faith was not God's intention....it is the tendency of man/flesh.

2Co 11:3

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Matt 23:6-12

And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Neither be ye called masters (teachers/instructors) : for one is your Master, even Christ.

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Not going to post any scripture.
But why do you think Paul was teaching Timothy?
So it could all get lost in time?
Why were letters written to believers?
Do you think google could exist if there wasn't a bldg somewhere with the words GOOGLE on it?

Institutionalisation had to happen.
But I agree that man messes up everything he gets his hands into.

There are two churches...one is made of stone and concrete and wood.
Without this church Christianity would have died out many years ago.
Then there is another church, the Body of Christ.
This body needed a church so that it could meet, teach, share communion, for edification and fellowship.

The first Christians met in homes.
This became impossible very soon when Christianity grew very rapidly.

Well, yes, but he was not "Bishop" in the way that Catholics think of it in a worldly way. But it does seem he was singled out by Jesus and generally acknowledged to be chief among the apostles. Seeing how Peter was also singled out to have his mistakes written down I think Catholicism in particular need to reconsider their doctrine of "infallibility".
Bingo . An d i can prove he was not the type of bishop the catholics try and claim
he was . As though he was one of their popes .
What have you seen them popes , who under guise they sit in apostolic traditoin
do and say .
WHY i see lots of long robes , lots of praise from men , lots of kneeling to them and calling them most holy father .
And what did peter say to a man who tried to kneel before him , named cornelious .
And what did peter and john say to the peoples who ran up to them as though they were the great thing .
CEASE and DISSIST . we are but men .
I didnt see peter tellig john , HOLD up let me get my gowns and ring on so they can kneel before me and KISS IT
and cALL ME MOST H OLY REVERAND , MOST HOLY FATHER .
Nor did i see it in peter when he entered into the house of cornelious .
DID YOU . Peter didnt tell cornelious , HEY man wait till i am seated in a chair and then kiss my ring
and CALL ME MOST HOLY FATHER .
No mam , I SEEN peter rather say THIS , gET UP , i am but a man . BINGO .
WHAT DID JESUS tell peter ande them .
TO BEWARE OF MEN who go about in long robes and love FLATTERING TITLES .............
I darn sure know the RCC didnt get that memo .
