She could have had an abortion; they had ways of doing it back than. Or, she could have done 'the right thing' and had the child anyway, even though she had doubts about wanting to be a mother. I don't understand the point. If Mary didn't want a child, God would have picked someone else to be the mother. Apparently, Mary was the right person for the job.

I hope she wouldn't have had an abortion. How would that have even been possible back then though?

Thats a good point.

I've asked these questions before on various forums and have received various answers (that I can't really remember) but I really want to know what you guys think.

1. What if Mary had said that she didn't want to give birth to Jesus?
2. Why was she a virgin and did she have to be for the prophecy to come true? (The Bible states that she had other children though.)
Hi April,

1. Then God would have found a different "Mary" until one of them said yes.

2. It was prophesized in Isaiah she would be a virgin soooo she had to fulfill the prophecy. If she didn't the child she bore would not be Him.

Can you show me in Scripture where it says that Mary had other children? I can't find it!

Thank you in advance....Mary

The idea that Mary was a perpetual virgin, ie, she never had sex with Joseph after the birth of Jesus is a myth.
Lol,,,,the myth that she had other children started during the Reformation. Even the original Reformers didn't believe your myth. It was the men who broke away from the Reformers that started your myth. You accept a 500 year teaching of men. That is unless you can show me in Scripture where it says Mary had other children???

Abortifacient was sold in the spice markets...it was harvested in Cyrene.

@Marymog They've all been listed already in many different threads and I'm clear in my own mind that she in fact did go on to have a number of children - both sons and daughters - after she had Jesus.

This is an old chestnut, been doing the rounds as long as I've been doing forums. Surely there are many more enlightening things to talk about. In discussion of this type it's always 'he said', 'she said', quote this, quote that and nobody ever sees things any different. Or if they do they never publicise it.

@April_Rose Don't get draw in. The Catholics believe that Mary was a perpetual virgin and never had sex. Everybody else believes that she had a normal married life resulting in more children.

Thank you @Taken,

I have altered my post in the light of what you have said. When I said, 'pure', I meant in relation to the fact of her virginity.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

I sort of thought that was your intent, as I've read your posts before.

God Bless,

April_Rose started this discussion in her OP. If she didn't want it discussed she shouldn't have made the false claim in the OP.

And it's not just Catholics that believe Mary was a perpetual virgin; so do the Orthodox - well over half of all Christians including the early "reformers"

Martin Luther
"It is an article of faith that Mary is Mother of the Lord and still a virgin....Christ, we believe, came forth from a womb left perfectly intact." (Weimer, The Works of Luther, English Transl. by Pelikan, Concordia, St. Louis, v.11,pp. 319-320; v. 6 p. 510.)

"Christ...was the only Son of Mary, and the Virgin Mary bore no children besides Him..."brothers" really means "cousins" here, for Holy Writ and the Jews always call cousins brothers. (Sermons on John, chapters 1-4, 1537-39.)

"He, Christ, our Savior, was the real and natural fruit of Mary's virginal womb...This was without the cooperation of a man, and she remained a virgin after that." (Ibid.)

John Calvin:
"There have been certain folk who have wished to suggest that from this passage (Matt 1:25) that the Virgin Mary had other children than the Son of God, and that Joseph then dwelt with her later; but what folly this is! For the gospel writer did not wish to record what happened afterwards; he simply wished to make clear Joseph's obedience and to show also that Joseph had been well and truly assured that it was God who had sent His angel to Mary. He had therefore never dwelt with her nor had he shared her company....And besides this Our Lord Jesus Christ is called the first-born. This is not because there was a second or a third, but because the gospel writer is paying regard to the precedence. Scripture speaks thus of naming the first-born whether or not there was any question of the second." (Sermon on Matthew 1:22-25, published 1562.)

Ulrich Zwingli:
"I esteem immensely the Mother of God, the ever chaste, immaculate Virgin Mary....Christ...was born of a most undefiled Virgin." (Stakemeier, E. in De Mariologia et Oecumenismo, Balic, K., ed., Rome, 1962, p. 456.)

"I firmly believe that Mary, according to the words of the gospel as a pure Virgin brought forth for us the Son of God and in childbirth and after childbirth forever remained a pure, intact Virgin." (Zwingli Opera, Corpus Reformatorum, Berlin, 1905, in Evang. Luc., v. 1, p. 424.)

So even the Reformers knew and acknowledged that the perpetual virginity of Mary is a truth rooted in both Scripture and Church history.

1. What if Mary had said that she didn't want to give birth to Jesus?
God would not have chose Mary if she did not want to participate in the birth of the Lord.
2. Why was she a virgin and did she have to be for the prophecy to come true? (The Bible states that she had other children though.)
The virgin state of Mary goes along with the Lamb without blemish in my opinion. And I believe it was appropriate for Jesus to be first born of Mary.

Exactly sex and marriage is sort of a packaged deal.

In case you missed it, but now that I know you have seen it, will you address the counter-arguments?

No, because I don't understand them. So how can I say anything in return?

I addressed this in post #5:

You don't come across as very coherent. I think perhaps you should be simple to address April's posts instead of grandiose in your language, which really isn't working for you BTW. Saying this as a friend :)

There are no such "what if" scenarios for Bible truth.

2. Why was she a virgin and did she have to be for the prophecy to come true? (The Bible states that she had other children though.)
The virgin birth was a necessity for the eternal Word to become a Man. Only a miracle would make it possible for God to take human form as a baby.

i wish there was a dislike button. Catholics will persist on trusting the false doctrines of their religion over the words of the bible which they manipulate to 'prove' their false claims. How many of your priests and higher clery are born-again believers?
