You are not discerning the question that the disciples asked Jesus in Matthew 24.
Jesus begins to describe the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. But the deciples didn't just ask Him about that time, their question was a three-part question ( unbeknownst to them).
[“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”]
1. When will these things happen? (So far the question referred to only prophecy of the Dmdestruction of the Temple).
2. What will be the sign of your coming? (when will you return)
3. When will the end of the age be?
Jesus then answered each part and adds more details to each time period.
His Second Coming has not yet occurred. The angels said when He ascended, that He would return in like manner. He hasn't yet and the events surrounding His return will be catastrophic to the entire world, not just a small town.
But His Secong Coming ushers in a Millennial Kingdom, yet still not the end of the ages.
Let's think about what the word, "age" means. A generation, a lifetime, an epoch of time. Example: the Christian Age. Nevertheless, age requires time.
Our physical concept of time is measured
in years (earth's revolutions around the sun): days (rotation of the earth on its axis); hours and minutes. When the 1st heavens (our atmosphere and physical universe) and the 1st earth is destroyed (as described in 2 Peter 3:10), a New Jerusalem, a replacement, a heavenly new earth of your will with no sun or moon or stars or nights or guess what else - TIME. Age will be no more. We will no longer count years or days, they will no longer exist, hence the end of the age happens at the destruction of the 1st heavens and 1st earth. And that has not happened yet!
I believe this New Jerusalem is heaven, a spiritual realm that currently exists now. What is it like? It looks just like earth, only it is perfect, brilliant, more colorful, peaceful, glorious, filled with love, void of sin or darkness ... filled with sound doctrine!
