How about the prophecy on King Hezekiah? He was told by the prophet Isaiah to set his things in order as he was going to die. Hezekiah prayed after the prophet had left and in answer to his prayer God sent Isaiah back to advise him that he had been given 15 more years.

You just don't go looking for them because you think you can. With Paul it may have been a real crawling through the grass kind of snake [a reptile], but I consider more often that it would be a man who speaks poisonous words with the tongue in his mouth. Again, we should not be looking for such a man in order to prove ourselves, but if we are where we are supposed to be in God and we meet such a man we can hear his words and be unaffected. We would continue along God's highway of holiness toward the goal rather than being poisoned by a false doctrine that would kill us spiritually.

    nice :)
so you think this makes Isaiah's 1st prophecy into an error somehow? Kinda, huh. But obviously we have a blind spot here somewhere right

An error, no, but it was ultimately wrong, wasn't it? But, maybe we are looking at the wrong thing here:

When a prophecy is given only once it may be as Isaiah's prophecy, subject to change if the hearer makes certain changes. As for instance when Joseph interpreted the dream of Pharaoh, he said that the interpretation would happen because it the dream was dreamed twice. Consider the meaning of the words twice or double in scripture in this connection. Consider that Joseph, the son of Jacob received a double portion instead of Reuben. Elisha received a double blessing because he saw Elijah at the end.

wow, good points. For whatever reason i am led to go review Jonah's "prophecy" here, which also did not come true i guess. Something about he didn't want to go to Nineveh bc he was pretty sure the Ninevites would be persuaded and turn or something? And he didn't like them? Dunno where i got that, might have made it up lol

we read this, but we don't really get to read the payoff to them, i wonder why that is? Or at least i am not reading it, might be right in front of my face lol

Yes, the prophecy of Jonah to Nineveh is similar. Because they repented they affected what would happen. They prevented the curse of God receiving instead the blessing. The Ninevites effectively did what Hezekiah did. He prayed and received 15 additional years. The Ninevites repented and received approximately 150 additional years. [See Nahum where the time of the Ninevites runs out for sure that time.]

Jonah's problem with going to Nineveh in the first place is perhaps another thing. There were other prophets that God did send who were told in advance that the people would not hear them or that is hearing they would not obey. God told them but they were to go anyway and deliver the message. Jonah should have been happy that his message would obtain a positive result.

What was the payoff to Elisha? That one might difficult. We could make note of the "miracles" and events of Elisha vs Elijah and perhaps, but that's probably not going to work anyway.

On Joseph, consider that Reuben's incest with his step-mother disqualified him for the double portion of the first born. Simeon and Levi murder all of those guys because of their sister's rape may have put them out of the running. Number 4 would have been Judah. But... apparently Joseph the first born of the second real/legal marriage got it. It does seem to me that it was Jacob's preference that decided rather than the next one according to natural birth. But perhaps when the 1st born is disqualified the father gets to choose. As to Judah he was in the royal bloodline to Jesus rather than Joseph; perhaps that was better.

Of course Joseph's double portion was in inheriting 2/12 instead of 1/12 from Jacob. Each of Joseph's two sons were treated like sons of Jacob rather than grandsons: Ephraim and Manesseh.

"But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live." Jonah 4:1-3

It seems he was saying he knew that God would be merciful if those people repented. He was apparently angry at God for making him go through it for God surely already knew the final result.

    Hello,

If you have ever brought a word from the Lord, then you will also know that it can be dangerous and get you killed, as well, if it is not received graciously by the people it is spoken too and you cannot escape their fury. Jonah was concerned with being made to look like a fool if God, after he had delivered his word from God to the peoples, then changed His mind because of their response.

So, to be a prophet of God, you have to be prepared to lose your life in delivering His prophecy to the people or to look foolish when the outcome of the words that you were told to deliver, is subsequently changed by God. Isaiah is one such example where he is sent to tell that king that he would die but when Hezekiah repented, God relented and added another 15 years to his life. Isaiah 38:1-6.

Being a prophet, or one who is able to explain God's word to other people is a dangerous thing as many a person has been verbally killed off by the people who do not want to believe the words that you bring.

    Shalom

I kinda see it as God hearing his prayers and having mercy on him. God can change His mind...but He will never change His character :)

Poor Jonah, he was such a coward, lol! I find his story kind of funny, how he tries to run away from God! As if :D

I haven't seen you around much and am praying for you.....well, I am here to humble myself and ask for forgiveness.....I was wrong in hearing from God about Damascus....I look back and see where I set myself up for such a bold statement and it was lack of seeking Him through prayer thoroughly....nevertheless I shall refrain from speaking in the future....I am not so confident about hearing from Him accurately lately.....so please accept my apology and pray for me. Thank you!

    Thank you.
    I need it.
I went through a dramatic event and it has a long term effect on my life.
But time will come for healing, it might be a long road, but God is still in control.
    Praise God.

My husband died in his sleep in 1999 and for me it took all the way until last year when I finally let go and quit grieving....so I truly do understand. God is very near you right now and will not leave you while you are grieving. Prayers....and a hug for you!.
