A variant on this is when you don’t catch someone’s name when first introduced, you ask, ‘Do you spell that with an “i” or an “e”?’ Then they usually spell out the whole name. Did get a funny look from Dr. Hill, though.
Yes, but he pronounced it with two - 'ee' and an 'a.' Dr. He-a-ell from Appalachia. That's why the funny look.

Or from Granville County, NC. Thinking of a local support rep one of our Taiwanese suppliers hired. I found myself having to translate his local dialect into standard English during conference calls with his Taiwanese bosses.

When I first saw and heard a Japanese young man, born and raised, in Georgia, speaking and walking as a cowboy. That really threw me for a loop.
