2 Thessalonians 2:1 speaks of the "coming" of Christ, but here Paul uses a different Greek word. Earlier he had used the word apokalupsis, or "unveiling." But now he uses the term parousia, which means "presence." Young's Concordance renders it, "a being alongside, presence." Strong's Concordance says it means "a being near, advent (often, return; spec. of Christ to punish Jerusalem, or finally the wicked); (by impl.) phys. aspect." We can say, then, that parousia means more than just the act of "coming." It refers to being near in one's immediate presence. The focus is not on the process of coming close, but upon being close. Strong also says that the word implies one's physical aspect as well--that is, one's face, countenance, or appearance. In 2 Thessalonians 2:1, 2 Paul mentions the parousia in the context of the glory of God being seen and admired in His saints. 1 Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming [parousia] of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to Him, 2 that you may not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. The "day of the Lord" is defined in terms of God's presence manifested in His saints. That day had not yet come in Paul's day, nor has it yet come today. This may seem a bit strange, since Paul also speaks of Christ being "in you, the hope of glory" (Co. 1:27). The presence of Christ in us is not a future event, but an ever-present reality to the believers. Yet Paul says it is also future. In what way? There are three veils in the temple. At Pentecost in Acts 2 the Church entered through the second veil into the Holy Place in its experience with God. But there remains a third veil that must be torn and penetrated in order for a body of people to enter into the FULL presence of Christ with no veils to hide His glory from them. This entrance into His parousia is the positive side of the day of the Lord. It is the positive side of His unveiling that reveals the mystery of godliness. The negative side is the unveiling of the empty temple of the son of perdition that unveils the mystery (hidden or secret) of iniquity. This is what makes the day of the Lord a time of judgment as well as of glory. We must see both sides of the day of the Lord in order to have a balanced picture of it. I say this because there are probably a thousand sermons preached on the negative side to every one that properly reveals the positive side. Logabe

Paul goes on to tell us what negative event must take place first, before the unveiling can take place. The answer will surprise most of you, no doubt. Verses 3, 4 say, 3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy [apostasia] comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. It is commonly taught that Paul was prophesying a great "apostasy" or "falling away" (KJV) in the sense of a falling away from the truth. It is easy to make that mistake, because we certainly must agree that such a thing has taken place in the Church. Paul says in verse 7 that men have indeed followed the example of the son of perdition in its mystery of iniquity (anomia, or "lawlessness"). But that is not really what Paul is saying. The Greek word, apostasia, is the feminine form of the word apostasion. Strong's Concordance says it means "something separative, (spec.) divorce." The word is translated divorcement in Matt. 5:31, 19:7, and Mark 10:4. Paul is telling us that a divorce must first take place before the day of the Lord can come. In fact, that divorce will CAUSE the unveiling of both Judas and Jesus in the prophetic sense. What divorce is this? It has to do with Judas, the son of perdition. It has to do with the temple in Jerusalem, whose unveiling manifested the mystery of lawlessness, darkness, and lack of glory. The old Jerusalem with its temple is identified as a Hagar in Galatians 4 in Paul's discussion of the two wives of Abraham. Paul says in verses 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. 23 But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. 24 This is allegorically speaking: for these women are two covenants, one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. 25 Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother. Hagar is the old Jerusalem; Sarah is the New Jerusalem. What is to be done? Well, what did Abraham do? 30 But what does the Scripture say? "Cast out the bondwoman and her son, For the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman. " Here is the great divorce that will unveil both temples. Judas is the primary pattern of the man of sin, because Paul uses the same term that Jesus used of Judas: "the son of perdition." In John 17:12 Jesus says of Judas, 12 While I was with them, I was keeping them in Thy name which Thou hast given Me; and I guarded them, and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. Jesus appointed Judas to be the treasurer of the ministry even though He knew that Judas was helping himself to some of the money and was a thief. John 12:6 says, 6 Now he [Judas] said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it. Later, during the last supper before the crucifixion, we read in John 13:27, 27 And after the morsel, Satan then entered into him [Judas]. Jesus therefore said to him, "What you do, do quickly." Only then did Jesus give His special instructions and teaching to the other disciples, beginning in John 14, telling them that He was going to leave them shortly, but that He would send them the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth. John 16:13 says, 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide [Greek: hodegos] you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. This is important because Judas was a "guide" to those who came to arrest Him and crucify Him. Acts 1:16 says, 16 Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide [Greek: hodegos] to those who arrested Jesus. As we will see as we proceed in this post, Judas must be viewed in contrast to the Holy Spirit, who is the true Guide, who leads into truth. Judas is the guide who leads people into the deceptive spirit of betrayal, and in this sense is like a counterfeit of the Holy Spirit. This is evident from 2 Thessalonians, where Paul speaks of the man of sin sitting in the temple of God, where the Holy Spirit is supposed to dwell. It is also significant that Judas was replaced in Acts 1:20-26 just before the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. The disciples had discerned from Psalm 109:8 that Judas was to be replaced, quoted in Acts 1:20, "His office let another man take." On the human level, they drew lots and chose Matthias, but on the higher level, the Holy Spirit was the only One who could guide us into all truth. Even as the Holy Spirit replaced Judas, so also do we move from one guide to another Guide. Perhaps also this is a key to understanding the "spirit guides" in the modern New Age movement. They need a new Guide. The account of Judas' betrayal of Jesus is found in Matthew 27, where we read : 3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!" 5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. Judas Iscariot (Ish-Kerioth) was from a town called Kerioth, or Kerjath. Iscariot means "Man of Kerioth." There was more than one town with this name, but no doubt he came from the town of Kerjath-arba, which is Hebron, for, as we will see, this fulfills all the types and shadows that prophesied of Judas in the Old Testament. Jesus chose Judas even though He knew that Judas was "a devil" (John 6:70 and 71). He chose Judas, because He knew that Judas was the one predestined to betray him. This had been prophesied in the Scriptures many times, and each of those prophecies were written about other betrayers who were Judas types and patterns. The primary prophetic pattern of Judas in the Old Testament is Ahithophel, who was King David's counselor and friend that betrayed him when David's son, Absalom, usurped the throne for a time. However, there is another earlier pattern that we will mention first in order to lay the prophetic foundation of understanding. Logabe

In Genesis 37 Joseph's brothers sold him as a slave to spice traders for 20 pieces of silver (Gen. 37:28) who were on their way to Egypt. Reuben, the oldest brother, had convinced the others not to kill him, but rather to cast him into a pit. The Bible says that he intended to save him later and return him to his father, Jacob-Israel. However, while Reuben was away, Judah said in Genesis 37: 26, 27, 26 And Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it for us to kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 "Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; for he is our brother, our own flesh." And his brothers listened to him. This was the original pattern of betrayal. It came at the hands of Judah. Judah is the Hebrew form of the Greek name, Judas . They are the same name. Judas was named after the son of Jacob named Judah, and he did the works of his father. It is also significant that Judah sold Joseph to Ishmaelites. Prophetically speaking, this has its New Testament counterpart in the fact that Judas sold Jesus into the hands of the chief priests in Jerusalem--who were, as Paul tells us in Gal. 4:25, spiritual Ishmaelites. Paul says that we are to cast out the bondwoman and her son, even as Judas was cast out and his office taken by another. The bottom line is that the Judahites who were converted to Christ became inheritors of the promise as Isaac, while those who remained behind under the Old Covenant were (and still are) prophetic Ishmaelites. When Judah sold Joseph to Ishmaelites, it is apparent that he had a sinister motive. Joseph was the holder of the birthright, while Judah was made the "chief ruler" (1 Chron. 5:1, 2). That is, Judah was to provide the kingly line that would eventually culminate with the Messiah, the true and rightful King over Israel and the whole earth. Judah apparently coveted the birthright as well, and he was willing to sell Joseph into slavery in order to get it. Prophetically speaking, we see the same situation today with the Jews, who have coveted the birthright of Joseph and usurped his name, "Israel," which Jacob had passed down to Joseph's sons in Gen. 48:16. For thousands of years the Jews have prayed to be reunited with their brethren of Joseph, the House of Israel; but in 1948 they decided to take the birthright name for themselves in the establishment of the Jewish state, calling it "Israel." In so doing, they have once again betrayed Joseph. Logabe

Acts 1:20 quotes David's writings about Ahithophel and applies them to Judas. It says, 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, "Let his homestead be made desolate, and let no man dwell in it;" [Psalm 69:25] and, "His office let another man take" [Psalm 109:8]. Psalms 69 and 109 are prophetic about Judas and the chief priests. These are too lengthy to quote here, but many of these verses were later quoted in the New Testament, applicable either to the priests or to Judas. As we pointed out earlier, Judas Iscariot was a "man of Kerioth," or Keriath-arba, also called Hebron. Absalom began his revolt there and called for Ahithophel to back him there. Hebron means "friendship." 6 And one will say to him, "What are these wounds between your arms [hands]?" Then he will say,"Those with which I was wounded in the house of my FRIENDS." Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss of friendship, and Jesus called him "friend" in Matthew 26:49, 50. 49 And immediately he [Judas] went to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him," Friend, do what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. Judas later regretted what he had done and hanged himself, as we read in Matthew 27:5, 5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. In this manner he again fulfilled the prophetic type in the death of Ahithophel, the betrayer of David. 2 Samuel 17:23 says, 23 Now when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and arose and went to his home, to his city, and set his house in order, and strangled [hanged] himself; thus he died and was buried in the grave of his father. In studying the story of Absalom's usurping the throne, we can understand the chief priests' motives in crucifying the Messiah. In studying Ahithophel, we can understand Judas' part in this conspiracy and rebellion, as well as his final end. All of this taken together gives us an under-standing of the son of perdition andhis prophetic role. The chief rulers of Judaism have again betrayed Joseph by usurping his birthright and name, Israel. They have done so with the help of Jesus' friends and disciples, playing the role of modern Judas. That is rather sobering. But there were two Judases among the disciples, one good and one bad. They represent two fig trees with very different fruit. We are to reject and cast out the bad, but join with the good. Logabe

We have shown in the past few post that the man of sin--also called the son of perdition--is identified as Judas in John 17:12. We have seen how Judas' life and calling prophesied of a betrayal first in Jesus' first work, and later in His second work. Relative to the two Judases, Judas Iscariot represents the bad fig tree of Judah, or the unfruitful branches that were to be cut off. But relative to his relationship with Jesus, Judas Iscariot also represents the portion of the Church that ends up betraying Christ. Paul tells us in Galatians 4:22-31 that the old Jerusalem is Hagar, not Sarah, and represents the Old Covenant. Its temple, priesthood, and religious order persecutes those who are of Sarah--that is, the Isaac company--those who have come under the New Covenant. The history of this persecution can be traced from the crucifixion of Jesus throughout the book of Acts, where the early Church was persecuted by the temple priests of Judaism. Paul tells us in Galatians 4:30 and 31 that the solution to this problem is : 30 But what does the Scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman. 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, but of the free woman. In other words, in the transition from the Passover Age to the Pentecostal Age, the old order of Judaism was the bondwoman, the Hagar, and its adherents were represented by Ishmael. The Christians under Pentecost were of Sarah and were the people of Isaac in this prophetic allegory. We know, however, that in the Scriptures Ishmael was called "a wild-ass man" (Gen. 16:12, lit. transl.). The ass is one of the main symbols of Pentecost in the Bible. For this reason, what Paul said about the old order of Judaism in his day is equally true in our day about the old order of Pentecost as we enter into a new Church Age. The Church denominations under Pentecost have largely forgotten Paul's admonition about casting away the bondwoman of Judaism. They have, instead, begun to teach that the bad fig tree of Judaism--in the form of the Israeli state--is the beginning of God's Kingdom on the earth. They teach that the Jews who are of the evil fig tree will bear fruit unto God, even though Jesus said, "Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever " (Matt. 21:19). In 2 Thessalonians 2:3, Paul says, 3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy [apostasia, "the casting away, divorce"] comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction [or "perdition," Judas]. Paul is telling us that "the day of the Lord" will not come until after the old order of Judaism has been cast away. I would guess that in Paul's day they were thinking in terms of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. That event was, indeed, the casting away of the evil fig tree at that time. However, because Jesus prophesied that this fig tree would again come to life and bring forth more leaves (Matt. 24:32), there must of necessity be a second casting away in our day. In 1948 this evil fig tree that Jesus cursed did come back to life and bring forth more leaves. The tree was the old Jerusalem with its children, who still continued to reject Jesus as the Messiah. "Judas" was thus raised up to manifest once again in the 20th century. And with it came the great betrayal, for the bulk of the Protestant churches gave their full support to that fig tree in its usurpation of the birthright of Joseph and the name of "Israel." The Roman Catholic Church at first refused to recognize them as "Israel" and the inheritors of the Covenant with God. But on December 30, 1993 the Vatican finally established diplomatic relations with the Israeli state and recognized them as "Israel." Then in March 2000 Pope Paul II visited Jerusalem, proclaiming to the world that the Jews were "Israel" and "the people of the Covenant." The Jews may certainly be the people of the old covenant, but that covenant has been abolished, because the people broke that covenant. That covenant is no covenant at all. It has been nullified for a long time. The only way that ANYONE can be in a covenant relationship with God is through the New Covenant. This comes only by means of Jesus Christ. The Jews of Judaism who reject Jesus Christ are NOT the people of this covenant. If they will accept the terms of the New Covenant and accept Jesus Christ as its Mediator, then they are welcome to be engrafted into this Kingdom Tree. But Christians have no business becoming Jews and trying to be engrafted into a cursed fig tree. One cannot do so without becoming part of the body of Judas Iscariot. Paul tells us further in 2 Thessalonians 2:8, 8 And then that lawless one will be revealed ["unveiled"] whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance [epiphaneia, "the shining forth"] of His coming; 9 that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders. This tells us that, like in 70 A.D. when Judaism's center of worship was destroyed, there will be another great destruction, a repeat performance. This is the event that "the day of the Lord" awaits. That day will not come until Jerusalem is destroyed once again, and the lawless fig tree, the people represented by Judas Iscariot is unveiled and exposed for what it is. Then will come to pass Jeremiah's prophecy of the old earthen bottle in Jeremiah 19. 1 Thus says the LORD, Go and buy a potter's earthenware jar, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the senior priests. 2 Then go out to the valley of Ben-hinnom, which is by the entrance of the potsherd gate; and proclaim there the words that I shall tell you, 3 and say, Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold I am about to bring a calamity upon this place , at which the ears of everyone that hears of it will tingle. Jeremiah pronounced judgment upon that place, with the elders of Judah as witnesses. Then verse 11 says, 10 Then you are to break the jar in the sight of the men who accompany you 11 and say to them, Thus says the LORD of hosts, Just so shall I break this people and this city, even as one breaks a potter's vessel, which cannot again be repaired; and they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place for burial. 12 This is how I shall treat this place and its inhabitants, declares the LORD, so as to make this city like Topheth. Take note that Jeremiah prophesied that Jerusalem would be broken like a potter's vessel "which cannot again be repaired." Jerusalem was "broken" by Babylon in Jeremiah's day--but it was later repaired. It was "broken" again by Rome in 70 A.D., but it was again repaired. I believe the day is soon coming when the city will be broken in such a way that it can no longer be repaired. This is because the old Jerusalem must give way to the new, even as the old covenant was broken and had to give way to a new covenant. The common thinking is to apply the prophecy in Jeremiah 18 to the Israeli state--rather than Jeremiah 19. But Jeremiah 18 is a prophecy to the House of Israel, not to the House of Judah. It applies to the "lost" tribes of Israel, including the tribes of Joseph, who were carried away by the Assyrians. It has nothing to do with the house of Judah, and certainly should not be applied to the Jews who suddenly decided to usurp Joseph's birthright name of Israel in 1948. The Israeli state is a counterfeit Israel. The same people who usurped the Messiah's throne and crucified Jesus in 33 A.D. have now usurped the Joseph's birthright as well. In both cases they had help from Jesus' disciples. In both cases Jesus Christ has been betrayed into the hands of those who hate Him. All of these things were prophesied, of course. None of this took place outside of God's knowledge and control. Even so, now that both the Protestants and Catholics are in agreement in Christ's betrayal in the 20th century, the time is ripe for Jerusalem's destruction. Time is running out for Christians to separate themselves from the body of Judas, the man of lawlessness, and adhere to the other Judas, Jesus' brother. When Jerusalem is destroyed, the Church will be shocked, for then it will become apparent that their "temple" had no glory in it. It was like Herod's temple, whose emptiness was exposed by the Cross. This time the emptiness of the old Jerusalem will be exposed by the brightness of His second appearance. The light will cast down all idols of the heart--men's opinions of who God is and through whom He is working His Kingdom plan.Logabe

But relative to his relationship with Jesus, Judas Iscariot also represents the portion of the Church that ends up betraying Christ. Paul tells us in Galatians 4:22-31 that the old Jerusalem is Hagar, not Sarah, and represents the Old Covenant. Its temple, priesthood, and religious order persecutes those who are of Sarah--that is, the Isaac company--those who have come under the New Covenant. The history of this persecution can be traced from the crucifixion of Jesus throughout the book of Acts, where the early Church was persecuted by the temple priests of Judaism. Paul tells us in Galatians 4:30 and 31 that the solution to this problem is : 30 But what does the Scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman. 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, but of the free woman. In other words, in the transition from the Passover Age to the Pentecostal Age, the old order of Judaism was the bondwoman, the Hagar, and its adherents were represented by Ishmael. The Christians under Pentecost were of Sarah and were the people of Isaac in this prophetic allegory. We know, however, that in the Scriptures Ishmael was called "a wild-ass man" (Gen. 16:12, lit. transl.). The ass is one of the main symbols of Pentecost in the Bible. For this reason, what Paul said about the old order of Judaism in his day is equally true in our day about the old order of Pentecost as we enter into a new Church Age. The Church denominations under Pentecost have largely forgotten Paul's admonition about casting away the bondwoman of Judaism. They have, instead, begun to teach that the bad fig tree of Judaism--in the form of the Israeli state--is the beginning of God's Kingdom on the earth. They teach that the Jews who are of the evil fig tree will bear fruit unto God, even though Jesus said, "Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever " (Matt. 21:19). In 2 Thessalonians 2:3, Paul says, 3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy [apostasia, "the casting away, divorce"] comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction [or "perdition," Judas]. Paul is telling us that "the day of the Lord" will not come until after the old order of Judaism has been cast away. I would guess that in Paul's day they were thinking in terms of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. That event was, indeed, the casting away of the evil fig tree at that time. However, because Jesus prophesied that this fig tree would again come to life and bring forth more leaves (Matt. 24:32), there must of necessity be a second casting away in our day. In 1948 this evil fig tree that Jesus cursed did come back to life and bring forth more leaves. The tree was the old Jerusalem with its children, who still continued to reject Jesus as the Messiah. "Judas" was thus raised up to manifest once again in the 20th century. And with it came the great betrayal, for the bulk of the Protestant churches gave their full support to that fig tree in its usurpation of the birthright of Joseph and the name of "Israel." Logabe
