What do you suppose it is about Jesus' death that allows for life for the sinner?
The proof is not in his death but in his resurrection that allows for the life of the sinner.
But I think your question is about the sacrifice not the proof. The sacrifice goes back to the OT. Blood/Death is always the price for sin. Before Christ, there was continual sacrifice by animals. But it is not merely about animal v human sacrifice; it is about the Old Covenant giving way to the New Covenant.
Jesus did not sacrifice himself to die and that is the end of the story. He came so that his resurrection is the proof that allows for the life for the sinner. Follow him to death + everlasting life upon resurrection. This is the sacred link. As far as the man sacrificed, that was simply God's choice to make the path for us.
