Mind Control: It’s Happening to You Right Now


Your mind is being controlled by distant strangers who don’t have your best interests at heart. If that sounds like a paranoid fantasy, brace yourself and read on. These are the findings of a series of scientific studies that show how a few dominant institutions have the power to affect how you feel, how you act, and even how you vote – without you ever knowing about it.

Deliberate mind manipulation of the masses is, by itself, nothing new. Nearly a hundred years ago, our global mania for consumption was unleashed by the malevolent brilliance of Edward Bernays, known as the “father of public relations.” Bernays was Sigmund Freud’s nephew and used his uncle’s insights into the subconscious to develop his new methods of mind control, designed to create the modern American consumer.

“We must shift America from a needs to a desires culture,” declared Bernays’ business partner, Paul Mazur. “People must be trained to desire, to want new things, even before the old have been entirely consumed. We must shape a new mentality. Man’s desires must overshadow his needs.” In 1928, Bernays proudly described how his techniques for mental manipulation had permitted a small elite to control the minds of the American population:

[T]he conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government that is the true ruling power of this country. We are governed, our minds molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of… In almost every act of our daily lives… we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons … who pull the wires which control the public mind.[1]
Bernays set in motion what we have all come to know as an essential part of our capitalist ecosystem: the use of mass media to promote roles, desires and status symbols that rake in profits for corporations. The chilling words of Wayne Chilicki, chief executive of General Mills, show how faithfully Bernays’ vision has been followed: “When it comes to targeting kid consumers, we at General Mills follow the Procter & Gamble model of ‘cradle to grave.’ We believe in getting them early and having them for life.” [2]

What’s changed is that a new generation of mind controllers are using the burgeoning technologies of data mining and social media to inject their power even deeper into our minds than their forebears could have dreamed possible. A modern-day Bernays named B.J. Fogg has founded a field called “captology,” derived from the acronym CAPT or “Computers As Persuasive Technology.” At the ominously named Stanford Persuasive Tech Lab, he teaches freshly minted graduate students how to use technology to “change people’s attitudes or behaviors.”

His teachings have spawned the interfaces of our new daily routines: the chimes from our smartphones diverting our attention, the thumbs-up icon on our news feeds, and the Like statistics telling us how popular we are today. These are known as “hot triggers” which kick off behavioral loops in our subconscious. Successful apps, they teach, are those that trigger a momentary need, and then provide us with an instant solution. The solution sparks a micro dose of endorphins in our brains. That feels good. So, like rats on a wheel, we find ourselves getting addicted, going back for more.[3]

Facebook has built its global empire of 1.6 billion active users on this addictive routine. According to one of Fogg’s students, Nir Eyal, Facebook’s key trigger is FOMO: fear of missing out. Humans evolved in hunter-gatherer bands, where survival meant being part of the community. The social anxiety of missing what our friends are doing arises from deep within our hormonal system. Meanwhile, as psychologist Sherry Turkle has pointed out in her book Alone Together, we sacrifice our daily physical intimacy with those around us by focusing our attention on the screen in our hands. [4] This has been brilliantly captured by artist Eric Pickerskill in his photography series, “Removed,” which documents the feeling of everyday social situations – after removing people’s smartphones from the picture.

Facebook has been researching the extent of its power over our behavior, manipulating its own users as guinea pigs. On election day in 2010, it sent “Go out and vote” reminders to more than 60 million users, causing an estimated 340,000 to vote who otherwise wouldn’t have. If it chose to send these reminders to supporters of a particular party or candidate, it could easily flip an election without anyone knowing about it. Under current law, it wouldn’t have to tell anyone what it was doing. In another experiment, which caused a public outcry, Facebook successfully manipulated the emotional state of 689,000 users by sending them either an excess of positive or negative terms in their news feeds.

The mind control doesn’t stop at social media. Do you believe in your autonomy when you’re carefully conducting research on a topic and use Google to search for something? Think again. Psychologist Robert Epstein has unearthed the massive subliminal power of what he’s called the Search Engine Manipulation Effect, or SEME.

This effect is based on the fact that when we search, we click half the time on one of the first two results, and more than 90% of our clicks are on the top ten links listed on the first page. There might be thousands of other web pages containing our key words, but Google decides which ones we’re going to read.

Epstein and his associate Ronald Robertson wanted to test whether SEME could impact how people decided to vote in an election. They asked a sample of Americans to research candidates for an Australian election (to minimize preconceived notions about the candidates) using their own mock search engine, “Kadoodle.” They randomly divided the sample “voters” into three groups, and served up the same results to each group. The only difference was the ordering of the results: one group’s results favored one candidate; another group’s results favored the opposing candidate, and the third group saw results that favored neither candidate.

The results were staggering. The proportion of people favoring Kadoodle’s “favored” candidate increased by 48%. Disturbingly, three quarters of the people in the manipulated groups were completely unaware of any bias in their search results. In the “neutral” control group, there was no significant shift of opinion.

Since then, they’ve replicated these findings in larger tests conducted across the U.S. They’ve discovered that using simple techniques, they can mask the manipulation so that virtually no-one is aware they’re seeing biased rankings. In 2014, they took their testing to India during the election for prime minister, where people were already very familiar with the candidates. Even so, they were able to shift the proportion of people favoring a chosen candidate by 20%, with 99.5% of people showing no awareness they were being manipulated. [5]

In many countries of the world, including the U.S., Google has a near monopoly over internet searches. The search-ranking business is entirely unregulated, and courts have ruled that Google’s right to rank search results however it pleases is protected as a form of free speech. If Google chose to swing the U.S. election, they could probably do so without anyone knowing about it. [6]

Would they do something like that? It turns out that Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google’s parent company, has funded a semi-secret company, The Groundwork, to provide Hillary Clinton the engineering talent she needs to win the election, prompting Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to call Google “Hillary’s secret weapon.” Meanwhile, Hillary has hired a longtime Google executive as her chief technology officer. If Google were prioritizing pro-Hillary search results over those favoring Bernie Sanders, we’d never know.

The British economist Kenneth Boulding once warned: “A world of unseen dictatorship is conceivable, still using the forms of democratic government.” So you decide, is your mind being manipulated?

Until these unseen influencers are better regulated, there are still some things we can do to protect ourselves from their mind control. One idea, suggested by technology thought leader Jaron Lanier, is to investigate your relationship with social media and take back your power to choose by conducting your own experiments. Consciously go through periods of complete disengagement from social media – a day, a week, or a month – and notice how it feels. How strong and how frequent were those urges to reconnect? Did you miss anything? Did anything positive arise in their place?

Another idea is to become aware of the sources of our news. Notice the extent to which you live in an information silo. Make a regular habit of checking the websites of news sources outside your ideological comfort zone. When conducting a search on Google, see what’s listed two or three pages down, and occasionally try an alternative search engine for a reality check. DuckDuckGo is one that doesn’t track your activity, meaning you will get a more neutral result.

Finally, we can use the realization that our minds are being manipulated to delve deeper into the patterns of thought instilled in us from early infancy by our culture. What ideas do we take for granted that are really constructions of the global corporate profit machine? What implicit beliefs do we hold about the world that are merely the result of deep cultural indoctrination? Asking these questions, while consciously searching for patterns of meaning that could lead to a more equitable and sustainable world, offers a pathway of liberation from the mind control those distant strangers are attempting to impose on us.

My husband & I went to the airport and were shocked that every single employee was a foreigner. I wondered where all the Americans were. Yet Trump is allowing all the caravans in - and many of them will take American jobs and all of them will likely go on government assistance. We stayed in an area one time that could not handle the influx of illegals. Raw sewage odor came up through the street - that odor is toxic. The toilets wouldn't flush. You couldn't be seen in the ER. It's coming to an area near you. Yet Trump is letting them all in while talking against it. More than half the doctors in our area are foreign. I read that many come to America using fake M.D. credentials. They caught one near us. So I looked on our state's disciplinary record and was shocked that it was mostly foreign doctors. America is being torn asunder.

I ask everyone to think about the following for a moment: A friend of ours ran for mayor. He shared something that gave me insight into how the masses are manipulated. His campaign people told him to show up at an address at a specific time. He went there and someone jammed a bag of groceries into his hands and a photo was snapped. He appeared in the news carrying the bag of groceries with the caption: XXX carries groceries to needy families.

He laughed about it but when you think about it, it's really not funny the way politics is nothing but deception.

1. Conformity – Asch Experiments (1953)

An example of Asch’s experimental procedure in 1955. There are six confederates and one real participant (second to last person sitting to the right of the table).

During the 1950s, Solomon Asch conducted and published a series of laboratory experiments that demonstrated the degree to which an individual’s own opinions are influenced by those of a majority group.

Male college students participated in a simple “perceptual” task. In reality, all but one of the participants were “confederates” (i.e., actors), and the true focus of the study was about how the remaining student (i.e., the real participant) would react to the confederates’ behavior.

Only one participant was actually a genuine subject for the experiment, the rest being confederates, carefully tutored to give certain pre-selected responses. Careful experimental construction placed a varying amount of peer pressure on the individual test subject.

The experiment was simple in its construction; each participant, in turn, was asked to answer a series of questions, such as which line was longest or which matched the reference line. (Fig 1)

The participants gave a variety of answers, at first correct, to avoid arousing suspicion in the subject, but then with some incorrect responses added.

The Asch Experiment results were interesting and showed that peer pressure could have a measurable influence on the answers given.

The control group, those not exposed to peer pressure where everybody gave correct answers, threw up only one incorrect response out of 35; this could probably be explained by experimental error.

The results for the other groups were interesting; when surrounded by people giving an incorrect answer, over one third of the subjects also voiced an incorrect opinion.

At least 75% of the subjects gave the wrong answer to at least one question, although experimental error may have had some influence on this figure. There was no doubt, however, that peer pressure can cause conformity.

It was debated whether this is because people disbelieve the evidence of their own eyes or if it was just compliance, that people hide their opinions.

Ways Politicians Manipulate the Masses:

10. Repeating Lies Over And Over Again

One thing that Goebbels believed was that logic was definitely not the way to go when you were trying to convince a massive amount of people to think your own way. On the other hand, he believed that emotion was always the best way to appeal to people, and so he designed his propaganda to target people’s most base instincts. He once said that he believed that the best way to utilize propaganda was when it spoke what people already felt in their hearts. In other words, it wasn’t important to give people a message that made sense, but basically to tell them what they already wanted to hear.

And this was used to great effect both throughout the Third Reich, and in many modern political parties today. At rallies, your favorite policies are shouted out in increasingly small soundbites, while the enemies are occasionally mentioned and quickly jeered derisively, with increasingly small counter-soundbites against their policies. This tribalistic manipulation makes it easy for a crowd of people at a political convention to briefly forget that the people in the other party are complex, mostly well-intentioned human beings like them, and not a dangerous enemy that needs to be squashed out no matter what.

1. They Constantly Reinforce The Greatness Of Their Own Country And Its People

Perhaps the final and most popular trick of the most brutal and effective dictators in history is to focus on national identity. After all, if you are going to oppress an entire populace and keep them largely under control without massive unrest, especially if you don’t have enough resources or tend to have draconian rules, you really need to keep them all in one group if possible. The less groups they are in, the easier it will be to keep them properly influenced and not have any pesky rebellions cropping up that get in the way of your rule.

Some countries today use this method, where the national identity is practically the religion, and you really cannot branch out that far into any kind of belief system that isn’t part of the party structure. North Korea is entirely entrenched in this philosophy, but China is not that far behind. The Party does allow you to have a freedom of religion, but they still do everything they can to make you want to avoid religion, and punish you if you practice in subtle ways. For example, the Communist Party, which basically controls everything and is very strongly in place, will not allow you to hold office if you are currently part of any religion. This ensures that any leaders, and the vast majority of party faithful, will remain atheist, and thus their true loyalty will be to country second, and party first, before all else. In North Korea, the level of patriotism indoctrination would make the most hardened American Patriot blush.

9. Polarizing Everything Into Two Sides Of A Debate

This is a trick that many people know of, and yet they still fall for it every single day. It is far harder for anyone to stay focused on the issues when they are focused on hating the other popular political party just because. In countries like the United States, it is easy for a Democrat or Republican to renege on their promises later, after all, they know your only option to get back at them is to vote for the other party — and most party faithful have been taught that the other party is evil.

However, this trick has been used to truly evil effect in other countries, where it was used for more than just trying to distract the populace from your own broken political promises. In the country of Rwanda back in the early 2000s, political and news elite from the Hutu majority polarized the country into two groups, the Hutu and the Tutsis, and dehumanized the Tutsis by saying they were cockroaches that needed to be exterminated. This led to the eventual genocide in Rwanda, where it is estimated that close to a million people were killed, all because they were almost unrecognizably different. Whenever someone tells you to hate an entire other group, for such a ridiculous reason, it would be best to not only not listen to them, but perhaps to try to remove them from office — even if they do hail from your party.

8. They Always Punch Down And Try To Blame Your Problems On An “Other”

One of the favorite things that tyrants or wannabe dictators will pull is to blame any issues you have on a smaller group that cannot properly defend itself. Of course, your problems are generally really because the government needs to do something different, but it’s far easier for an evil leader to just convince people that a bunch of others are to blame, and then persecute them mercilessly.

This was a favored strategy of Adolf Hitler, who went after the Jewish people, stealing money from them, and rounding them up to put them in death camps. Many Germans assisted, or went along with it, as Hitler had spent years and untold amounts of money trying to convince people that the Jewish minority was literally greedily holding on to all of Germany’s money, and was truly to blame for everyone’s problems. Leaders today still try these tricks, whether they are blaming undocumented hispanic and latino immigrants in the United States, or Islamic immigrants in Europe. This does not necessarily mean, of course, that every leader who blames your problem on an “other” wants to exterminate them, but it is something that it is best to stay vigilant about.

7. Any News That Doesn’t Come Straight Out Of The Dictator’s Mouth Is Considered Suspect

One of the favorite tricks of any dictator who wants to keep control of the masses is to control the flow of information. This means that if there are any news sources not controlled by the evil person or people in charge, and they cannot immediately shut them down without too much backlash, they will constantly do everything they can to discredit that source and make it sound ridiculous or fake. In situations where the leader can shut down other news sources, they will slowly but surely do so until only theirs remains.

Some leaders who try this will try to be sneaky about it, and make people think the (now only) major remaining news source isn’t truly, entirely controlled by them. A good real world example of this is Russia Today, the main source of news in Russia. While Putin claims they don’t take their marching orders directly from him, they might as well. Russia Today is essentially controlled by the Kremlin, and Putin has control over what the Kremlin does and what policies it puts into place. If you have control over the flow of information, it can be hard for anyone to form a negative opinion about you or your administration, since you can ensure that only positive things are said about you and what you are planning to do in the future.

6. They Oversimplify Things And Hammer Their Point Homer Over And Over Again

One of the things any dictator or minister or propaganda has quickly learned is that the more complicated a message it is, the harder it is to get that message across. Many have theorized that this is what made it so difficult for Hillary Clinton to connect with people — she tends to be very intellectual in her manner of speaking and is not very good at summing things up. She lacks charisma and isn’t particularly relatable, in other words. On the other hand, Donald Trump was able to simplify his message into simple soundbites that take hold in the memory quickly. Whatever your thoughts on the man, it’s hard to deny he has charisma and knows how to appeal to his constituency. Now, this isn’t to pass judgment on either one as evil, but only to show how the simplicity of a message can have such a great effect.

The Nazis used this technique regularly themselves. Even if it meant losing the more intellectual people, they felt that to take control they needed to connect with the masses. In order to do this, they needed very simple messages that could be plastered over and over and reinforced in the mind again and again. While it may not have had effect on the deeper thinkers of society, when it came to the masses, it was a brutally effective strategy.

5. They Make Themselves Larger Than Life In Your Mind — Becoming Above Criticism

One of the favorite tricks of any dictator or wannabe leader is to make themselves into something larger than life. The human mind already tends to gravitate toward thinking of people with fame and success as somehow more than a regular human, and so those with evil machinations for power have realized just how much advantage they can take from this phenomenon. The most radical example of this is the Kim family from North Korea, who have gone to the trouble to teach children that they are actually gods and responsible for the creation of the world.

The propaganda and brainwashing in North Korea is so deeply ingrained that people cried as if the world had ended when Kim Jong Il died. This is, of course, the perfect way to keep the masses under control. Despite starvation, mass cruelty and all kinds of other awful conditions, it is hard for any real resistance to take hold when people believe they would actually be rebelling against God himself. While this may not hold up forever if conditions in North Korea get bad enough, right now there doesn’t seem to be any attempt at rebellion despite most of the population being stuck in horrendous conditions.

4. They Subtly Trick You Into Becoming A Willing Party To Your Own Delusions

Joseph Goebbels believed that people were actually mostly racist pigs on the inside, but that he just needed to bring that out in them more fully. He believed that one of the best ways to get people to think or do what you wanted was to subtly meld what he wanted you to think, along with your own deeply held beliefs or prejudices. Many people assume that Nazi tactics were always direct and in your face, but sometimes a less obvious approach was warranted. The Nazis would talk about people’s pride of country, and their right to a land with safety, security, good job opportunities and all of that — and how Germany needed to be brought back to the greatness it once had. Most people, of course, already believed this, and so it wasn’t hard from there to take people’s resentment that they don’t have what they should, and stir it into anger against almost anything that wasn’t the Nazis themselves.

This is one of the ways the Nazis were able to slowly get so many citizens to willingly learn such a terrible and unjustified hatred of the Jews. They started off slowly appealing to people’s sense of identity and fairness and then once they had them hooked, they made it more and more clear that there was only one way to make things better — destroy the Jewish problem entirely. Much of the time Goebbels didn’t believe in being too direct about violent talk against the Jews; he believed in using the right wording and emphasis, and letting people’s natural emotions and prejudices take hold and carry them further forward — by this time, you had become a party to the delusion yourself.

3. They Always Make You Think You Are Being Besieged By A Stronger Enemy

One thing the most crazy leaders or tricksters do is keep you distracted constantly. Perhaps the country is dealing with mass starvation, or is on a media blackout, or many of them are in death camps, or perhaps much of the army is infected with roundworms. Regardless of what the issue is, they would rather have you believe that something very horrible on the outside could be coming… any day now. You just don’t know when it will happen, and it’s really, really scary. In the case of North Korea, they constantly beat the drum that the evil United States is about to bang down their door, despite the fact that nuclear weapons are about the only reason the USA would ever spend the money in the first place to invade North Korea.

However, it’s really not for the other countries, or meant to truly intimidate them, but more to keep the people in line. If your country is not in good shape, or you are oppressing people, you can make the excuse that you are being besieged by enemies, and you are in a state of war or war readiness for very good reason. A restive population will stay calmer and be much less likely to start a revolution, despite some starvation issues, if they truly believe it’s all a sacrifice to make sure the country is prepared for an imminent invasion from a horrific enemy.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have Christian friends in the UK who think he is wonderful although they have been quieter of late. They also have lots of American biker friends who are Christians too and think Trump is wonderful and perhaps took their lead from them. I also have American online friends, some Christian some not, who say he makes them ashamed to be American.
