and Brazilian law identifies that there are different levels of "slurs" and hate speech. Specifically, the court case centered on the fact that 1997 Brazil’s legislature ended separately defining hate speech against a group, and hate speech against an individual for every group except LGBT. The court changed this and now hate speech legislation protects everyone equally. The mandatory sentencing part of the law is specific to section 20 of the 1997 law specifically the incitement of hostility or violence. So while you can inflict a slur against LGBT individuals in Brazil the result will likely be a fine or community service unless that slur involves something like a death threat and then you can expect to go to prison for up to five years.
