You are right that books once they have been published do not cause us problems until such times as they are "dumped" into the waste paper bin, however, many trees are cut down, lots of water and much energy is required for all of the written material produced recorded upon paper whether it is just a sticky note put on the frig or a voluminous book that has been written.
What we are seeing is that the way information and stories are being transmitted is slowly changing and electronic devices are coming to the fore and these devices need costly support structures and energy as well as lots of waste.
