John 5:

20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. ...
23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
The Pharisees did not honor Jesus.

43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
Therefore, according to Jesus' logic, they did not honor the Father or love God.

42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.

The Greek for John 5:42 is ἀγάπην τοῦ θεοῦ. This is a genitive construction that can be translated either as an objective genitive (love for God) or as a genitive of origin (love from God; see Romans 5:5).

The context of John 5:23 argues in favor of the objective genitive; the more immediate context of the love being inside them argues for the genitive of origin.

What gave Jesus certainty that the Pharisees didn’t love God?

John 2:24-25 KJV
24) But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
25) And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

Much love!

Were I a cynical man, I would think that could be said for a number of people on this forum, though they'd never admit it.

But I am not a cynical man.
It reminds me of this:

[39] You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me;
[40] yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. John 5:39-40 RSV

The Pharisees' actions betrayed them. Scripture is meant to lead people to God. It would seem to me that for the Pharisees, Scripture WAS God.

Yes. They made the Law their god, and didn’t worship the LORD GOD who took them out of Egypt. Just as they made the tiny calf idol while Moses had went up to the mountain to speak with Yahweh.
