The number one test to distinguish truth for error and the Spirit of God from that of the spirit of antichrist is the confession of our divine Lord Jesus Christ. Every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. There is one thing the spirit of antichrist will deny and that is they will deny the deity of Jesus Christ. They will deny God in human flesh. They will always deny the Incarnation which was permanent. When a person affirms that Jesus Christ is God in flesh that equates to divine truth. Every spirit that confesses meaning to continually confess or agrees with saying the same thing as John declares in his writings is from God. This is the person who is taught by the Spirit of God according to John. The first test that you want to have for any teacher is their Christology, check out what they say about Christ. This becomes a litmus test that is very easy to spot among the false teachers. If you have somebody who denies the deity of Christ you have a clear indication they are of the spirit of antichrist.

If we go back to the beginning of 1 John, we read that which we he beheld, and actually touched concerning the Word of life. That is a term expressing the very deity of Christ. Christ emanates from God as His living Word. He was with the Father in the beginning in 1:2. Jesus was One with the Father sharing the same essence with the Father in heaven with Him before the foundation of the world. John says He was manifested to us. John's language then starts out with the fact that Jesus Christ emanates from God as the very living Word of God. Jesus is the living Word of God,the One John says that was from the beginning that we heard, we saw and we touched. Jesus the Word of life was the eternal One who was with the Father prior to His Incarnation and was then manifested to us in the flesh that we could see and hear and touch according to John. Therefore, we can clearly see Jesus is the very Word of God Incarnate. He is the eternal life who became flesh. The Word who was with God, the Word who was God, was the One who John says was manifested to us. This is how we can tell the spirit of truth from the spirit of antichrist. Can you confess Jesus is God Incarnate?

1 John 4:2
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;

2 John 7
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Erchomenon the present participle in 2 John 7. Here is what the Greek Scholats and experts say which confirm the above.

Alford- the present tense is timeless(pg 274 RNTC on 2 John)

Brooke- the Incarnation is not only an event in history, it is an abiding truth(pg 274 RNTC on 2 John)

Stott- the two natures manhood and Godhood were united already at His birth, never to be divided. In 1 John 4:2 and here in 2 John 7 emphasizes this permanent union of the natures in the One Person ( TNTC pages 209-210) He who denies the Incarnation is not just a deceiver and an antichrist but “the deceiver and the antichrist”. There is in this heresy a double affront: it opposes Christ and deceives men.(stott TNCT page 210)

Marshall- the use of the present and perfect tenses becomes significant if the point is that Jesus Christ had come and still existed “in flesh”. For him(John) it was axiomatic that there had been a true Incarnation, that the word became flesh and remained flesh. It is a point that receives much stress in 1 John 2:18-28;4:1-6;5:5-8. (NICNT pages 70-71)

Smalley- the present tense emphasizes the permanent union of the human and Divine natures in Jesus. Gods self disclosure in Jesus took place at a particular moment in history , but it has continuing effects in the present and into the future(Word Biblical Commentary page 317)

Nicoll- the continuous manifestation of the Incarnate Christ(Expositors Greek Testament Volume 5 page 202)

Akin- Much has been made of the fact that John uses the present tense in this Christological confession. Literally the verse reads, “Jesus Christ coming in flesh.” “Coming” is a present active participle. This stands out in remarkable contrast to the affirmation of 1 John 4:2, where the text states that “Jesus Christ has [emphasis mine] come in the flesh.” There the perfect active participle is used. The key, it seems, is to discover what John is affirming. Here in 2 John the emphasis falls on the abiding reality of the incarnation. First John 4:2 teaches that the Christ, the Father’s Son (v. 3), has come in the flesh. Second John affirms that the wedding of deity and humanity has an abiding reality (cf. 1 Tim 2:5). The ontological and essential nature of the incarnation that would receive eloquent expression one thousand years later in the writing of St. Anselm (1033–1109) in his classic Cur Deus Homo is already present in seed form in the tiny and neglected letter of 2 John.

Lenski- In 1 John 4:2 we have ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα, the perfect participle, “as having come in flesh” (incarnate, John 1:14); here we have ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί, “as coming in flesh,” although the participle is present in form it is really timeless.of Christ as "still being manifested." See the note at 1 John 3:5. In 1 John 4:2 we have the manifestation treated as a past fact by the perfect tense, ‎eleeluthota ‎"has come

Robertson- That Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh Ieesoun ‎‎Christon ‎‎erchomenon ‎‎en ‎‎sarki‎. "Jesus Christ coming in the flesh." Present middle participle of ‎erchomai treating the Incarnation as a continuing fact which the Docetic Gnostics flatly denied. In 1 John 4:2 we have ‎eleeluthota ‎(perfect active participle) in this same construction with ‎homologeoo‎, because there the reference is to the definite historical fact of the Incarnation.

Vincent- Is come erchomenon‎. Wrong. The verb is in the present participle, "coming," which describes the manhood

hope this helps !!!

1John 4:2-3 . . By this you know the Spirit of God . . Every spirit that
confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit
that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.
And this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard was coming,
and is now already in the world.

The flesh spoken of in that passage is David's flesh.

"Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to
the flesh" (Rom 1:1-3)

Now, in order for Jesus be born with David's flesh, Jesus needed a mother
biologically related to David because Joseph played no role in her pregnancy.

"The angel said unto her: You shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a
son, and shalt call his name Jesus . . . and the Lord God shall give unto him
the throne of his father David: (Luke 1:30-32)

So then, unless someone can prove beyond even a hint of sensible doubt
that neither Mary nor David were biologically related to Eve, then we must
concede that Jesus is biologically related to Eve; and seeing as how Eve's
body was constructed with material taken from Adam's body, then everyone
and anyone descending from Eve is/are Adam's descendants according to
the flesh.

The conclusion to draw from Jesus' biological genealogy is that the Word of
John 1:1 hasn't always existed as an h.sapiens, rather, the Word's existence
as an h.sapiens began with the very dust from which Adam was created.

Now, according to 1John 4:2-3, folks insisting that neither Mary, nor David,
nor Eve, nor Adam had any role in Jesus' flesh, are presently under the
influence of the spirit of antichrist; and that is a really unfortunate condition
to be in.

"If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ."
(Rom 8:9)

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF ANTICHRIST? PART 1

Is it a person, an organization or merely an evil principle? When did the antichrist first appear, what are the characteristics of antichrist, and what will mark the end of antichrist?

THE term antichrist has been applied to various persons, organizations and teachings. Some called the dissolute and murderous Roman emperor Nero, who so cruelly persecuted Christians and is believed to have caused the death of the apostle Paul, antichrist. Others applied the term to Domitian, who banished the apostle John to the isle of Patmos. Some termed Mohammed the antichrist, while many of the reformers, such as the Waldenses, the Hussites and the Lollards, applied the term to the papacy.

Those having faith in the Bible as God’s Word trace the antichrist to the garden of Eden where God said that he would put enmity between the seed of his organization, “the woman,” and that of the serpent, Satan the Devil.(Genesis 3:15)

The term “antichrist(s)” is found but five times in the Bible and only in the writings of the apostle John. Identifying the antichrist of his day, John wrote: “Many deceivers have gone forth into the world, persons not confessing Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.” And also further identifying the antichrist: “Who is the liar if it is not the one that denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist.”(2 John 7; 1 John 2:18,22)

Jesus foretold the coming of antichrist: “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones.” And so did the apostle Paul: “Let no one seduce you in any manner, because the day of YHWH will not come unless the falling away comes first and the man of lawlessness gets revealed, the son of destruction.” Like John, Paul showed that “the mystery of this lawlessness is already at work,” in his day, and that it was “according to the operation of Satan.”(Matthew 24:24; 2 Thessalonians 2:3,7,9)

Before we can properly identify the antichrist, it is necessary that we first properly identify Christ. Just who was Christ? Christ, like its Hebrew equivalent, Messiah, means “anointed one.” It calls to mind the high priests and kings of the nation of Israel who were anointed with a specially prepared oil to serve in their official capacities as representatives of Jehovah God. The prophet Daniel had foretold the coming of the Anointed One, and the apostle Peter identified him as Jesus, saying to him: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”(Matthew 16:16; Daniel 9:25)

It appears that “antichrist” has a twofold meaning. As its name indicates, it is anti or opposed to Christ. And it also has the thought of false or pseudo Christ, in the place or stead of Christ. While, as we have seen, some have attempted to apply the term to a certain individual, or organization, the foregoing scriptures, together with the physical facts, indicate that all persons, organizations or groups that falsely claim to represent Christ, that arrogate to themselves the Messianic role or that oppose Christ and his followers can properly be termed antichrists, even as Jesus said: “He that is not on my side is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters.” (Matthew 12:30) Interesting in this connection is the observation made by McClintock & Strong’s Cyclopædia that “the just conclusion seems to be that Antichrist is not to be confined to any single person or power, but is essentially a great principle or system of falsehood having various manifestations, forms of working and degrees.”

Christ Jesus claimed to be the Son of God in a unique way, distinctive from all other humans. Said he: “Before Abraham came into existence, I have been.” “No man has ascended into heaven but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man.” “I am God’s Son.” And God himself repeatedly bore testimony to the same, as at the Jordan when Jesus was baptized, and when Jesus and three of his apostles were on the mount of transfiguration.(John 8:58; 3:13; 10:36; Matt. 3:17; 17:5)

It follows that all who deny this claim of Christ Jesus, be they devotees of Oriental religions, atheists, deists or agnostics, are antichrists. Regarding all such, Christians are warned that they “cannot be drinking the cup of YHWH and the cup of demons,” and that there is no harmony between Christ and Belial. (1 Corinthians 10:21; 2 Corinthians 6:15) Included also would be all professed Christian clergymen who say, as did one Boston, Massachusetts, Congregational minister: “I make bold to say that Jesus claims nothing for himself that is not universally true of the ideal or divine nature inherent in all of us,” and that Jesus was no more a son of God than were such pagan philosophers as Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius.

All those who deny that Jesus came in the flesh are antichrists, and all who claim that Jesus was incarnated, merely clothed with flesh, are antichrists,
for such people deny that Jesus actually came in the flesh. Plainly we are told that “the Word became flesh,” and that he was “produced out of a woman.” Had he been merely incarnated he could have dispensed with a human mother. And had he been both human and divine upon the earth he would not have hungered after fasting, nor would he have needed rest after a journey or after a strenuous day; neither could he have died as man’s ransomer, for what is divine is immortal.(John 1:14; Galatians 4:4)

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF ANTICHRIST? PART 2

Others identify themselves as antichrists by their denying Jesus’ office as Ransomer and High Priest. John the Baptist termed Jesus “the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world!” Jesus himself said that he came “to give his soul a ransom in exchange for many.” John tells us that “the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” Peter states that Christians were ransomed “with precious blood,” “even Christ’s.” And Paul’s letters are replete with references to Christ’s sacrificial merit, such as, “God recommends his own love to us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more, therefore, since we have been declared righteous now by his blood, shall we be saved.” Yes, even the Hebrew prophets foretold that Jesus would bear the sins of many.(John 1:29; Matthew 20:28; 1 John 1:7; 1 Peter 1:19; Romans 5:8, 9; Isaiah 53:12)

Yet in spite of the fact that God’s Word so magnifies the atoning work of Christ, many professed clergymen of Christendom deny that the blood of Christ has any saving power. Thus one Denver, Colorado, Baptist clergyman said, at the turn of the century, that the teaching of the atonement is “repugnant to the moral sense,” that “strictly speaking, the death of Christ was not necessary to human salvation,” and that “the Bible nowhere says that Christ’s righteousness is imputed to the believers.” Certainly all who subscribe to such theories are antichrists, even though they may claim to be Christian ministers.

Further, all professed Christians who have apostatized, who exalt themselves, who manifest the spirit of rebellion or who show hatred to their Christian brothers are properly termed antichrists. Regarding such Paul said: “Oppressive wolves will enter in among you . . . and from among you yourselves men will rise and speak twisted things to draw away the disciples after themselves.” He also referred to such as “the man of lawlessness,” “the son of destruction,” who “is set in opposition and lifts himself up over everyone who is called ‘god’ or an object of reverence, so that he sits down in the temple of The God, publicly showing himself to be a god.” Jesus foretold that in our day some of his professed followers would beat their fellow slaves and eat and drink with the drunken, and called such the “evil slave.” The facts show that all such antichrists have manifested themselves, for much false doctrine is being taught in the name of Christianity, there is much self-exaltation and creature worship and there is much ill will manifested toward sincere followers of Christ by some who profess to be their brothers.(Acts 20:29, 30; 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 4; Matthew 24:48-51)

Just as there are religious antichrists there also are political antichrists. Among such is godless communism. It also is one of the “false Christs” that Jesus foretold would come and deceive many. How so?

Communism is an antichrist in that it seeks to supplant Christ and his kingdom as earth’s rightful Ruler and mankind’s only Hope. Thus we are told that “it is the Messianic character of Communism that gives it dynamic power to command allegiance.” Its leaders such as Lenin and Stalin have been not only idolized but deified, termed saviors and the ones chosen by God to lead their people.

Then, too, Jesus, in his illustration of the sheep and the goats stated that whatever had been done to his followers had been done to him, which fact he also called to the attention of Saul of Tarsus when that one was on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians. Since all Communist lands bitterly persecute Christ’s true followers, they are in fact persecuting Christ and therefore are antichrists.(Matthew 25:40; Acts 9:5)

Not that the spirit of antichrist is limited to Communist lands, for, even as Jesus foretold, his followers today are being hated by all nations. In fact, what is true of communism’s being the antichrist is also true of the United Nations. It also, even as was its predecessor, the League of Nations, is being given a Messianic role to play by the clergy of Christendom, as the world’s savior, its only hope and the only light, whereas the Bible plainly shows that in Christ shall the nations hope and that he is mankind’s Savior and the Light of the world. The United Nations therefore also is an antichrist.

Jesus referred to this scheme of modern man in his great prophecy as “the disgusting thing that causes desolation, as spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in a holy place.” It is disgusting in God’s sight because all that is “lofty among men is a disgusting thing in God’s sight.” In that it presumes to stand in the place that should be occupied by God’s kingdom it stands in a holy place where it ought not to stand. Truly it also is an antichrist.(Matthew 24:15, 16)

The apostle John had a prophetic vision of the final form of this antichrist: “And I caught sight of a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored wild beast that was full of blasphemous names and that had seven heads and ten horns. The wild beast that you saw was, but is not, and yet is destined to ascend out of the abyss, and it is to go off into destruction.”(Revelations 17:3, 8)

In this vision we see Babylonish religion pictured as a wicked woman, even as the true Christian congregation is represented in the Scriptures as a chaste virgin. The numbers seven and ten, denoting completeness, indicate that this beast represents all the nations of the world that are united for the purpose of accomplishing what only God’s kingdom can accomplish. As the League of Nations, this beast “was” from 1920 to 1939; it was not during World War II, from 1939 to 1945; after which time it ascended out of the abyss as the United Nations organization. At Armageddon, “the war of the great day of God the Almighty,” it is destined to go off to destruction.

And in that religious leaders in the United States hail their land as one with a Messianic mission, it also becomes a manifestation of the antichrist. And concerning the end of all modern-day manifestations of the antichrist the apostle John wrote: “And the wild beast was caught, and along with it the false prophet that performed in front of it the signs with which he misled those who received the mark of the wild beast and those who render worship to its image. While still alive, they both were hurled into the fiery lake that burns with sulphur.”(Revelation19:20)

So we see, in summing up, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of YHWH God, God’s High Priest and earth’s rightful Ruler, and that all who set themselves in opposition to him or who presume to take his place as the ruler of the world and the one to bring lasting peace, are antichrists. Since the destiny of all who comprise the antichrist is destruction at Armageddon, it follows that all who would escape that end must separate themselves from antichrist. The way to do that is to heed the prophetic command: “Seek ye YHWH, all ye meek of the earth, that have kept his ordinances; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye will be hid in the day of YHWH God anger.”(Zephaniah 2:3)

The wise men are put to shame, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of YHWH; and what manner of wisdom is in them?(Jeremiah 8:9)

Exactly. Now is the spirit of antichrist strong on this forum? I would say it definitely is. And the apostle John says that Christians are to have nothing to do with the antichrists.

Actually those who apply diety to Jesus Christ are saying Jesus was immortal, which means Jesus wasn't able to be our ransom sacrifice because a person who is immortal is beyond death. So those that apply diety to Jesus are teaching another Christ. Jesus was fully human, the scriptures are very clear that the Word became human. While Jesus was on earth, Peter said that Jesus was the Christ, the son of the living God. So the person who is the Word is the son of the living God that became human. Those who deny this are teaching another Christ. Which means those who agree with applying diety to Jesus are the ones who belong to the spirit of the antichrist, because they deny the Word is the only begotten Son of God

No that’s conflating and equivocating. As a man He could die as God He is Immortal. It’s why He is the perfect Mediator representing both parties as God and man. Only God is Savior which is why He is called that in scripture. Titus 2:13 and 2 Peter 1:1.

hope this helps !!!

Saying this above, you're teaching Jesus wasn't one of us. Genesis 2:7 shows we are living souls or living persons but not immortal living souls or living persons. Human beings are not God-Men, we are living souls or living persons and we die, and at death, we stop being living souls or living persons. Jesus came in the likeness of the first man Adam who was a living soul or living person, he wasn't a God-Man so to be as we humans are Jesus when he was human was a living soul or living person as we are, not a God-Man, because we're not God-Men. Jesus sacrificed himself, when he died he stopped being a living soul or living person for parts of three days then Jesus Father and God resurrected him back into existence as a living person. So we know from the scriptures that Jesus did die, that he slept in death in Hades for parts of three days.

1 John 4:2
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;

If I were in your shoes, as I once was, I would believe and say the same thing.

I’ve already put your post to good use, both on and off the forum. It has been helpful.

I have three questions I’d like to ask you about it.

1. What does your spirit of antichrist test do in regard to those unitarians who assert and affirm the doctrine of the Deity of Christ?

2. What does your spirit of antichrist test do in regard to binitarians?

3. What is your motivation for the OP? Stated another way, what do you hope to accomplish with it?

The test is specific to the Son , so I have no problem with your above examples from 1 John 4:2-3 and 2 John 1:7.

So a large number of unitarians, and all binitarians, pass this particular spirit of antichrist test then. Presumably, there’s additional spirit of antichrist tests which would be necessary to account for the non-trinitarians in this group.

What do you hope to accomplish with the spirit of antichrist test for non-trinitarians who fall outside of the unitarian / binitarian group which pass the test?

Is the doctrine of the Deity of Christ of greater importance, equal importance, or lesser importance than the doctrine of the Trinity? When I was a trinitarian I would have said they are equally important, inseparable, essential. Anything less would have been unthinkable. The times they are a-changin among trinitarians.

Clearly, the proposition presented is that those who reject the doctrine of the Deity of Christ are spirit of antichrist persons. That’s serious. Very serious. Life and death serious. That gets my attention and should capture the attention of others.

It’s not as clear yet in the proposition, how, or even if, those who reject the doctrine of the Trinity are also spirit of antichrist persons. I’ve commented that presumably it does, but that comes from my former trinitarian pov.

Thinking about motivation, but not mind reading.

It rallies the zealous, or should. It protects the vulnerable (primarily the newbie, but also the improperly instructed, the careless and the indifferent) in the doctrine of the Deity of Christ faith.

What does it do to, or for, those who reject the doctrine of the Deity of Christ?

Offers them instruction? Calls them back to the faith they once embraced and then abandoned? Serves as a witness against them? Discourages them from teaching their belief / unbelief to others?

I don’t know what @Christophany had in mind, but I’d like to.

The antichrist verses have to do specifically with Christ and the permanent union of the 2 natures. That He came in the flesh and remains in the flesh. The Trinity becomes a different issue. That becomes an issue from the "Christian, Christendom " perspective of a true God vs a false god argument. I like to keep those separate even though they are linked. In this thread I was being specific regarding the spirit of antichrists teaching. That spirit cannot confess The Son( God) has come in the flesh and remains in the flesh- Its a refutation of gnosticism in the early church.

hope this helps !!!

Okay. Thanks.

I think you’re terribly wrong in applying it has you have - which should come as no surprise to you - but I don’t doubt your sincerity, and I have nothing but respect for your zeal. As I said, when I was a trinitarian I would have applied it just as you have. You’re consistent with what you believe as a trinitarian.

I completely agree with you that the passages were intended to be, and are, a refutation of Gnosticism.

I’m a Jewish monotheist, not a Gnostic. I confess that Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, the Son of the living God, came in the flesh, died in the flesh, was resurrected in the flesh and remains in the flesh.*

I’m not offended by your assertion that I’m a spirit of the antichrist person. I expect it from you, having once been where you now are.

I have enjoyed out interaction in this thread as its rare to have a cordial dialogue between a unitarian and a trinitarian without ad hominems lol.
