As part of his arrangement for blessing mankind, God purposed a righteous heavenly government to bring redeemed mankind back into reconciliation with God. This heavenly government will have a king, appointed rulers and priests and earthly subjects.

Jesus Christ, born as a descendant of Abraham, was God's promised “seed,” and it is upon him that the Father conferred kingship. (Galatians 3:16) So, as indicated by God’s sworn oath to Abraham, it is by means of Jesus Christ that people out of all nations of the earth will be blessed.

As part of the Kingdom arrangement God has chosen some to become sharers with Christ in his Kingdom. Revelation 20:6 says that these "chosen ones" (elected) will rule in the heavenly kingdom as "kings and priests" for a thousand years. These will also be resurrected first.
Those who are selected by God for this role are anointed by God's spirit which produces an inordinate desire to leave all earthly ties and join their Lord in in heaven.

The elect, having the anointing of God's spirit will be the most difficult for satan to deceive, having proven their faith already....but he will give it his best shot...

Who is Matthew referring to when he says "the elect"?

Jesus is addressing Israel in Matt. 24. This entire chapter is what will befall Israel as the great tribulation begins and of course effects the rest of the world indirectly. The main purpose of the great tribulation is to bring Israel back to God through faith in Christ.

The false prophets that perform great signs and wonders to deceive are in fact the antichrist and the false prophet that Christ is speaking of here. The purpose is to deceive Israel into believing the antichrist is the Messiah, and of course to deceive the rest of the world indirectly. The elect here are Israel!

They are the elect in that they were chosen before the foundation of the world to introduce Christ to the Gentile world, that was their election by God from the beginning. But they failed in that election/calling, and Christ formed the church to bear that election of presenting Christ to the world, UNTIL, Israel comes to Christ.

So Matt. 24 should be read as concerning the end times for Israel.

Fantastic question sir! The elect are those of the new covenant sir. They are referred to by many names, but are chosen from among mankind to rule as Kings and Priests with Jesus the King in the heavenly Kingdom of God as the rulers over the earthly part of that Kingdom.
