I had become inhibited by debates on the forum but I am now sparking in life the gift God gave me and keep seeing things about the benefit of using the gift of tongues.

Fasting more again lately, and I've noticed that I automatically pray in tongues more if I fast, and begin praying less in general if I'm eating a lot. There's a direct correlation. I think it's why many of the great saints of the past have advocated fasting.

They used a CT or MRI scan and saw that a part of the brain that is activated by tongues is never active at any other time.

I recently started intermittent fasting to lose weight. And instead of just going without food I've been fasting and praying for purposes. I've noticed that I've become slightly more spiritual. It's been pleasant.

Good, then you can pray for the health and wellbeing of those of us who do not have the gift of tongues, lol.
Hi, Ferris....there seems to be confusion about the gift of tongues and simply praying in tongues during personal prayer time.
It is my belief that the gift of tongues is specifically associated with the fellowship of believers who are gathered together and as the Holy Spirit desires will use that gift through an individual to convey a message....but there must be an interpreter present as well

Yes! You know it.

I remember when I was instructed to have the apostolic church pastor where I was attending pray for me to receive an infilling of the Holy Spirit. He prayed as I requested, and I most certainly received an infilling, with spiritual gifts imparted at that time, I believe. But not tongues, even though he tried to then coach me in speaking in tongues. But you never have to guess about the real deal, is what I think.

Much love!

There is the problem for me. Why in the world would you have to be "coached" to receive a spiritual gift? That is kinda weird. I don't think that happens with the rest of the gifts. I saw Sid Roth try to teach folk how to do it. I wouldn't think that would be necessary.

That such a study was done at Oral Roberts University doesn't come as a surprise.
Oral Roberts has done more for the Kingdom of God than you or anyone on this forum has. I have seen the power of God operate through him when he was a tent evangelists.
You speak ignorantly not knowing anything about his ministry and the thousands who came to accept Jesus during his time of evangelism and the thousands who received supernatural healing at these tent revivals.
He himself was struck with tuberculosis at age 16 and was dying...his parents took him to a tent revival and he was prayed over and received a supernatural healing. From that time forward he began evangelizing and soon had his own tent ministry. He is known as the major forerunner of the Charismatic movement that began in the 50's.

I felt decidedly uncomfortable, and in a few minutes that part was over. It was in my car, about 5 minutes on the road, came the infusion of power. I had over a hour drive home, and most of it was spent as I just laughed and laughed, hysterically joyful! I felt so filled up, so much power come into me, and I knew my life would be forever changed after that.

And I haven't received tongues to this day. The pastor had his ideas, but he also did as asked, just like me, and God did His thing just the same.

Much love!

What a joyous story. I know people who have sung in tongues all the way home and only 'came to' when they were in their own drive not knowing how they'd got there and another who had unintentionally driven through red lights all the way home after being filled with the Spirit. I was actually in the car that night.

Encouraged by our vicar we had been reading 'When the Spirit Comes' and a visiting pastor came to preach at the Sunday night service. And my own experience was the laying on of hands that Sunday night during a fellowship session in the vicar's home. When he put his hand on me he jumped and said that I was bubbling over but I didn't speak in tongues there and then.

A few days later I was alone in my kitchen and started to sing in tongues. The same tune over and over until I began to recognise the same words repeated in a sort of chorus. It went on like that for ages and then all of a sudden I began to sing the interpretation which I now recognise as a personal prophecy, part of which a few years ago, right out of the blue, God told me had been fulfilled. I wrote the words down but have never forgotten them or the tune and I still sing them to myself, specially in times of self doubt. They always lift my spirits and bless me.

I don't have a strong voice but when i sing in tongues and just allow the Spirit to take over it doesn't sound like me and the melodies are often beautiful and uplifting, with different rhythms - loud, soft, lilting and slow, fast and I love the African sounding ones.

If one has to be coached for speaking in tongues (and that is quite common according to my understanding) then it cannot be a supernatural gift. Why not just try and learn a foreign language?

You know . . . I got a D in Spanish in 7th grade. French class, in 10th grade, I lasted all of about 2 weeks. But for sommmme reason, I took to Koine Greek much more easily! Except those verb declensions. They make me crazy! So I use study helps.

Much love!

To give the man credit, I realize, that in his view, I'd be given tongues, and he was trying to "demystify" it for me, make me comfortable with something strange happening with my lips and all.

But I think it provided a golden opportunity for me to fake it if I were like that.

Much love!

It's more than that - it's also for personal prayer.
The following is a quote in 1947 by a man of God who used to teach my old pastor:

"It is wonderful to have a gift that will do the praying for you. It is wonderful to have a gift that will do the teaching for you... to have a gift that will do the testifying for you. Isn't it wonderful to have something like that? The more we yield to that, the more we depend on that, the better results we will get from God. If I am contentious, stubborn, going to have my will, I will ruin that gift..."

People who try to coach others to speak in tongues are likely in error themselves, but let us not throw out the gift of God because of some men's errors!

I have done both. That is I have learned foreign languages through my own efforts and study as well as having received God's gift enabling me to talk with Him in tongues.

Get into your prayer closet, sister, just you and God. When I do that while I often begin in English as really get into it and into Him, what comes out of my mouth changes. Many years ago it was a babble, the babble of the baby in the Lord that I was. Today it is no longer babble, but a language where I can pray for things which at one time my conscious mind could not.

Give God the glory!
