It's not a work. It's the opposite. Baptism is a work. Doing good deeds is as work. Confessing Christ and having faith are not.
Belief is not a work. Calling it an act is incorrect.
"For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law."
"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
Having convictions is a work? Not according to scripture.
"Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified."
When you see how scripture contrasts works and faith you know they can not be the same thing.
Our response, of course is important.
Salvation is of and by faith according to God's grace. For by grace you have been saved.
Faith comes through Christ to us as a gift
Acts 3:16

God's work of faith he puts in you
2 Thessalonians 1:11

By the way, here is God the Father of the LORD Christ, supporting existence of both as one God. There is a reason we are known as Christians.
