That’s why I remain certain that dividing, by clues, as to where a verse or verses fits in time, is extremely important. We are not told when a verse suddenly jumps backwards or forwards in time or to a different timeframe, so if we aren’t meticulously careful, we lump them in together where they don’t belong.

The biggest clue we have been given that a verse in a passage can jump forward in time with no warning was when Jesus got up to read from Isaiah. It wasn’t even a different sentence, or any indication that part was fulfilled then and part would be fulfilled in a different time. It’s a huge clue for us. It’s a key, actually. So if a verse is talking about the new heavens and earth and then suddenly is talking about even some amount of death occurring, a jump backwards in the timeline has occurred.

Well, it’s okay, you don’t see what I was talking about. It’s not like it’s a new misunderstanding. Even when Jesus walked on earth they couldn’t seem to grasp that jumping forward and backward in prophecy.

Here we have a Greek word G1367 dischilioi. "Dis" means two or twice and chilioi (G5507) means a thousand so this word means two thousand. Naturally then if there was one chilioi (G5507) it would be exactly a thousand just as it is in every occurrence of the word in the NT.

G5507 always means exactly one thousand like it does here. To mean more it needs to have more added to it. Here we have G5507 as exactly one thousand and then 260 added to that one thousand to form 1260. Guess what? If we removed the 260 we would have how many? Exactly one thousand, G5507.

So when we have G5507 alone, it is exactly one thousand. And when scripture speaks of "thousands" in the plural it uses chilias G5505 not G5507.

If Revelation 20's thousand years was thousands of years like Amillennialism claims, the word needed would be chilias G5505 especially the double appearance of the word as found in Revelation 5:11, "thousands of thousands" which is truly an unknown amount. G5507 strictly means only one thousand and no more. It cannot mean 1001, nor an unknown number of thousands or millions etc.

I'll use an example to further explain the difference of the two words.

G5505 is like a thousand dollar bill. There is just one in your hand but it's worth a thousand dollars and the word is written in the singular because of this.

G5507 (the Greek word found multiple times in Revelation 20) is like having one thousand dollar bills. That's worth the same exact amount, but it's a plural word because there is a thousand singles of something rather than one thing that equals a thousand. Imagine in your left hand a thousand dollar bill, and in your right hand a thousand one dollar bills. Same amount but the way each amount is represented is different. G5507 is plural in this sense, not that it means more than a thousand or multiples of thousands like 2000. Some Amill's will falsely claim G5507 is plural because it means an unknown amount but that shows ignorance of the Greek language and how numbers are represented.


Amillennialism will falsely claim that chilioi G5507 can have a symbolic meaning but that is false. It is never used in such a way in the Greek manuscripts. The Greek language doesn't have numbers like other languages have, as in non-alphabet characters. The language uses letters to form words that represent numbers. The only way to express and unknown amount is by using "thousands of thousands;G5505 G5505" but that is not used in Revelation 20.

In Greek if one wanted to say they had 1,000 of something, chilioi G5507 would be used. Revelation 20's "a thousand years" is exactly 1,000 years, not 999, not 1,001, not 2,000.

Revelation is as much literal as it is symbolic such as the letters to the churches and various warnings about this or that, saints being overcome and killed and armies going here or there.

Revelation also uses a Greek word that can mean an unknown amount based on the idea of a thousand and it also uses a Greek word that can only mean a thousand. That's why it is essential to study all the words used in Revelation that have some relation to a thousand.

Here is an example using English to show how something written can have a literal use of exactly a thousand and also use something that means much more than a thousand.

A man is selling a piece of art that is historically important and valuable. He is asked how much he wants and he says, "I'm not sure but certainly thousands." A buyer replies, "I agree it's valuable but your asking price is too high and incalculable so I offer a thousand dollars."

So here we have something using the word thousand which is an unknown amount while we also have an exact amount of a thousand. Revelation also has the same usages of something using the word thousand which is an unknown amount while it also has a word that is an exact amount of a thousand.

Here we have a Greek word G1367 dischilioi. "Dis" means two or twice and chilioi (G5507) means a thousand so this word means two thousand. Naturally then if there was one chilioi (G5507) (found in Revelation 20) it would be exactly a thousand just as it is in every occurrence of the word in the NT.

G1367 dischilioi means 2,000. It cannot mean 10,000. It cannot mean 1,000. It has a fixed meaning.
In order to use Greek and speak of an unknown number the use of chilias G5505 which means a thousand but when used twice, it represents "thousands and thousands" which is an unknown amount.

Back to the story above. Someone in the future might read the story and try to argue that the buyers offer was more than a thousand because in a different culture and different language and in a different religion, in a book written thousands of years before that art story, they used a thousand as a figurative number. Well, that is completely unrelated to the art story and it's language and culture.

It's common for Amill to claim how symbolic Revelation is, usually saying it's the most symbolic book and "mostly symbolic" but I think that's an exaggeration. I find the book to be mostly literal like the letters to the churches and the many times John saw activities happening in heaven and on the Earth and the description of life in the eternity. There's a handful of very symbolic language like the dragons and the beasts and the winepress etc. Isn't Revelation actually more like 70-80 percent literal and maybe 20-30 percent symbolic?

All numbers in Revelation are literal and exact.

42 months is 42 months.
144,000 is 144,000.
3 and a half days is 3 and a half days.
7 seals are 7 seals.
7 trumpets are 7 trumpets.
7 vials are 7 vials.
24 elders are 24 elders.
1260 days is 1260 days.
And yes, a thousand years is a thousand years.

Amounts that are non-literal or non-exact:
