To be reconciled to God, has to be based on God.
Why?
Because its God who requires it, and so, its God who came down here and became Christ on The Cross to provide to the world what HE REQUIRES so that anyone and everyone can become reconciled to Him....= ""The Gift of Salvation"".
God became one of us so that He can offer eternal righteousness and eternal forgiveness and eternal life to all of us.....as a "GIFT".

How do we go to heaven?
We go by meeting God's requirement.
And what is it?
Jesus said.....>"you must be born again".. and what does that provide ???
It provides to you to become "made righteous".. so that by this righteousness you are allowed to exist where God exists, as there is no sin found there.. only RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Reader, we can't do this for ourselves.
WE can't eternally take care of our own sin, and until this is eternally resolved, then we are LOST and Separated from God, and remain unrighteous.
Solution?
God came down here to provide us with a holy life, in place of our sinful one.
Christ lived it, and offers it as "The Gift of Salvation".
God came here to provide us with His very own righteousness, in place of our sinful unrighteousness., and that is "The righteousness of God, IN CHRIST">
The verse says...>"""For God hath made Jesus to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we (you and me)... might be made the righteousness of God in Him.""""

"God made CHRIST.""....This is GOD as the man Jesus...... """to BE SIN......for us"".
Look at that.. That is GOD becoming our SIN on the Cross.....and by this sacrifice of God as Christ on the Cross, we who BELIEVE Become. = ""made the righteousness of GOD"..

Notice that Jesus became your sin, and you became " MADE RIGHTEOUS"... if you are born again and not just water baptized.
This is SALVATiON.....Its the ""GIFT of SALVATiON".....and the "GIFT of Righteousness"..
What is this?
Its God as Christ paying for all your sin, and DYING, as the punishment do you for your sinful life.
And what do you become, because of this REDEMPTION?.... You become, as born again, the holy Eternal Life that God provides as "Christ in you, the Hope of Glory".
"as Christ IS.......so are the born again....in this world"...

That is SALVATION, finished.
That is what it means to be SAVED and "made righteous"...BY.."the gift of righteousness", and "the gift of Salvation".
