Matthew 3:11, “I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am—I am not worthy to carry his sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." Notice: for repentance, not salvation! Jesus will baptize them with the Holy Spirit later.
Mark 1:8, "I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Two different baptisms! One came after the other!
Luke 3:16, "John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming—I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." Later! Two separate actions!
John 1:33, "And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining—this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ " Two separate acts! Two different purposes: repentance and receiving the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38, "Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Water baptism never achieved this!
Acts 10:47, “No one can withhold the water for these people to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” They received the Holy Spirit first (before water baptism). Water baptism was clearly a symbolic act: the burial of the sinful man.
Acts 11:16, "And I remembered the word of the Lord, as he used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Two separate acts!
Acts 19:1-7, "While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul went through the inland regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples there and said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” So Paul said, “Into what then were you baptized?” “Into John’s baptism,” they replied. Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and when Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy. (Now there were about twelve men in all.)" This clearly shows the difference between baptism in water and baptism in the Holy Spirit. Two separate baptisms!
Romans 6:3, "Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?"
1 Corinthians 12:13, "For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit."
Galatians 3:27, "For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ."
This should end this discussion about Acts 2:38 and baptism. The Bible says what it says!
