I can understand people using tats as witness tools, as they have been for eons...

I get the tat thing. Just not my thing.
@Taken So you get why at 18 so many Christian young ppl go to the tattoo artist for a Bible verse, ref., etc.....?

Kind of, Nailing their colors to the mast at the passage into adulthood.

I’ve seen more 18 yr olds get really dumb tats, they shortly regretted.
I sort of think the religious tats are something a bit older crowd does.

@Taken I'm sure there is a lot of truth to what you say about faith based tattoos for somewhat older folk.

I was thinking also, getting the tattoo appointment is definitely what 18 year olds do.

As when earnest young Christians are planning their first job, assignment or service posting at 18:

The serious-minded preacher's daughter going away to college; the earnest young man going into the military; the only Christian in his family moving out of town for work: the 18 year old young believer will typically be looking on the Web for the address and portfolio of local tattoo artists; often for something faith based that from the start defines the start of adulthood.

Earlier this week I dined with a serious young Christian active in testimony for whom this transition in life had meant exactly the trip to an artist for the faith based tattoo.

It often seems to be an inner, stated equation:

"I am becoming an adult + I am a Christian = the faith based tattoo".

@Taken IMHO makes for a strong case in Christian families for parents instead to guide their 18 year old sons and daughters with the notion that the first tattoo should usefully reflect their lasting faith values...right?

Well, you know me, I would not encourage or guide anyone to get a tat.

@Taken Oh I strongly agree that it has to be 100% the Christian young man or woman's decision.

Reflecting on the situation of parents of a 17 year old young Christian man or woman, though, the prospect of them soon messing up the opportunity to get something inked that reflects lasting faith values because they haven't reflected on it enough would likely make some mothers and fathers wish to advise them about the first ink, as the big 18 approaches.

(This is my point, really....if it has any logic to it...)

That's a great point. ...I imagine it would depend on the geographical area too.
@dhh712

Yes, you are right, I'm sure.

For example, in the Bible Belt:

Around here (Bible Belt), it is common, especially among evangelical Christians, for the girls under about 40 to have religious tattoos. More do than don't, especially when you get to the under 30 crowd. I hardly know any female at church that is under 30 that does not have a tattoo.

In the Bible Belt it would seem to be something that is - naturally, confidently - done.

To make a general point, all the young ppl with Bible verses tattooed with whom I have spoken seem to have had them done as witness tools.

Seeing as the Bible verse tattoos likely result in regular conversations with ppl, I would reckon that whenever these occur they would feel rather vindicated about their decision to go to the tattoo artist to receive those particular inkings.

Sure. I believe we have established agreement on those points.

Recently I talked with a Christian young man with a faith based tattoo; a while ago my wife and I talked to a young lady with the whole of the wording of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area.

I can pretty accurately guess I think that in their untattooed days they would have had such a strong desire to use such ink as witness tools that they would have gone with joy to their appointments with the tattoo artist.

With the very warm weather and shorts and tanks regularly worn, it is interesting to see Couples ONE loaded with tats, and the Others not a single tat...sometimes its the male, sometimes the female with the tats.
