Having finished reading The Refutation of All Heresies, I understand now why my professors required us to read only the last three chapters of book 10 in our undergraduate study of / introduction to Hippolytus.

I’m going to ride with Hippolytus for a while longer. Reading now his Treatise On Christ and Antichrist.

Finished reading Hippolytus’ Treatise On Christ and Antichrist, as well as his Treatise Against The Jews; rather unfortunate (ironic?) timing on the latter.

Being as it’s Hannukah, I’m taking a break from Hippolytus (and the other Ante-Nicene Fathers) and reading 1 Maccabees & 2 Maccabees.

“One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for a 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.” - Carl Sagan

Finished reading 1 Maccabees & 2 Maccabees.

Returned to the 3rd century and read Against The Heresy of Noetus, written by Hippolytus.

Now journeying back to the 1st century. Currently reading The Jewish Jesus, written by Robert Aron.

I’m currently reading Jesus Before Christianity, written by Albert Nolan.

It will be interesting to compare what this Roman Catholic author has to say about the Jewish Jesus with what Robert Aron, a Jewish author, said about the Jewish Jesus.

Reading is a tremendous investment. It devours hours. Maybe the time spent will reap tremendous dividends — and maybe not.

Why spend your time on things of little value? You have to pick through a lot of ordinary, mundane pebbles to find a gem. Oh is wonderful when you find a gem, but oh so many hours of rock picking.

If your Bible looks like this… don’t just sit there; do something about it. Read!

As for me, there’s just a few days remaining in this year’s Bible reading plan. It’s been a good change up (once through the Old Testament, twice through the New Testament) but beginning on January 1 I’ll be returning to my preferred daily reading plan - chronological order. I’ll be using The One Year Chronological Bible from Tyndale House Publishers Inc. I invite my audience to join me in reading the scriptures - Old Testament and New Testament - following this plan.

If not this plan, then choose another.

If not with me, then with someone else; or on your own.

That sounds interesting. I'm guessing it's a historical look at the various councils that delivered what has become known as orthodoxy.

Actually, I don't think orthodoxy was delivered, more like beaten into us.

I wonder if the caption should have read, "Reading can seriously increase your ignorance." Particularly when you do no fact checking of what you read. Book with titles of, "The earth is flat," is one book that would increase our ignorance if we accepted the "fact" it presented.

Should have? If it did then someone would doubtless be wondering if the caption should have read, “Reading can seriously damage your ignorance.”

Could have? Certainly. That’s the other side of the coin.

Your point is valid and important. I would place it under the two categories of Read thoughtfully and Read critically.

The purpose of the thread is to encourage people to read more. What are you reading these days?

It’s not unusual for me to be reading two or three books at a time. I’m still engaged in reading Jesus Wars - I highly recommend it to all - but I’m concurrently reading a children’s book titled Fables of A Jewish Aesop, translated from the Fox Fables of [Rabbi] Bereciah ha-Nakdan, by Moses Hadas.

The stories - 119 of them, from the 12th century - are short. I‘ve been reading one or two a day. They contain many references and quotations from the Old Testament.

11 down; 108 to go.
