Is there anyone here that knows someone (or experienced) things that would lead them to believe they have a gift of prophecy? I just want to know what to expect, whether from biblical reference or personal experience. I know it's a touchy subject and is highly abused but I would appreciate it if there was someone who could maybe give me some insight on it..

Look at some of the better known prophets in the bible, they generally are not wealthy or popular and they often live in a state of persecution or ridicule. Usually they are good humble servants and have completed some form of missionary or conversion work. I have not done any prophesying If you are pursuing it I hope you receive that gift.

I wasn't necessarily talking about being a "prophet", but more along the lines of experiencing things that end up having a meaning to other Christians that I am close to. I was afraid to post this because I know it's controversial and people think it's no longer given, but things keep happening that I can't explain. It's always spontaneous or a day before and I have no idea that what I'm doing has any meaning until after, when there is always some kind of confirmation relayed to me.

Recently, most of it involves Facebook where everyone can see and I have asked God to help me understand things and so i'm asking here. Things have been happening since I was young but I wasn't able to connect the dots until now. It's hard to talk to anyone about it, but I just wanted to ask here in case someone here has experienced something similar.

Thanks in advance (even if you don't agree).

The 9 major spiritual gifts are most certainly and definitely for today, and are being given today.
This I can promise you ... and you can take this promise to the bank.
You could easily have been given one or more of these very special gifts.
However, they may not be permanent gifts; they may be given only when needed.
So, please study and pray over 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 ... re: the 9 major spiritual gifts.

And also Ephesians 4:11, which lists the 5-fold ministry.
They tie in with the ministry offices in 1 Cor. 12:28.

Ok, thank you for your answer and not approaching this as if I am some crazy wannabe false prophet. This can be so isolating, that I don't want to make any missteps. I will continue to be fervent in my prayer to God about this and seeking his guidance.

Thank you very much, John Zain and Comm.Arnold. I pray that God will bless you both. :D

I too have been wondering if God was training me in the area of prophecy as over the last few years I have had the experience of making statements that my mind registers after I have made the statements. It is like my mind is bypassed and the statements made before it registers in my brain. In fact this is the first time I have revealed this other than to my prayer partner. When the statements have been made even though they may have occurred in a conversation I believe they have gone out in power, not my own, and it is like no sooner the statement has been made that I experience peace and know that it has been done. At first I was a little freaked out as I would not want to be deceived or cause harm so I now pray that the words I speak be only from the Holy Spirit and that God guard my mouth or shut it so that my mouth not be used by the deceiver. I have come to a place of peace as I know that if it is God's will that I prophecy then he will cause it to come to pass and that I just be a usable vessel and an honorable ambassador for him as when I have made these statements it has been usually to an unsaved person and it has caused something to soften in their hearts and more open to talking about the Lord. In fact it is this more like a word of knowledge or a form of intercession? I know it blesses me as much as those receiving the statement and I sense the Holy Spirits presence intensely and I just want to get on my face and worship him.

Not me. Tarshish, here I come! (Jonah 1:3)
Training? To lie on one's side for 390 days then the other for forty (Ezek 4:4-6) only to have to eat cow dung instead of human afterwards. Not always as glamorous as Hollywood would portray. But if God says so...so be it.

One way to know if something is true or not, is to observe how often and how heavy that subject weighs on your spirit. If it's something that keeps occurring, you might want to seek the Lord about it. God bless you and show you your unique giftings.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

Our Father has given me words of wisdom before. One time I happened upon a fist fight. A whole bunch of men were gathered to watch the fight and were yelling fight, fight! I started yelling stop! Remember that you are friends, at the top of my voice, drowning out everyone yelling fight. The fight stopped immediately and the one young man hung his head and said well I thought we were. The other young man walked away. I did not know these people were friends. No doubt the Spirit gave me these words.

Would this be called a gift of prophesy?

No, Shirley, this is definitely not prophecy, and may not be any of the 9 spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12).
But, you mentioned it yourself ... if I had to guess, I'd say it was the gift of wisdom.

But, the Holy Spirit can put a strong thought into your mind, and you can act on it with boldness.
Ditto for demons (Satan's angels), and therefore ditto for God's angels.
Wow.
