Here's are some general questions. (without getting into support)
- If reincarnation were true, how would it fit into the plan for humankind?
Perhaps this is on the eschatology side?
- How, or why, would these cycles end?
- What do they mean in reference to the final judgment?
One soul judged for multiple lifetimes? Or ???
Good questions. The same, or similar questions could and should be asked of other sets of beliefs... does orthodoxy provide solid answers to these questions?
- If reincarnation were true, how would it fit into the plan for humankind?
What is that plan? In the beginning we are told 'the plan' for mankind and it is this:
Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness, so they may rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move on the earth.”
God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue it! Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I now give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the entire earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the animals of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has living breath in it—I give every green plant for food.” It was so.
God saw all that he had made—and it was very good.
We are told in a second account in Genesis, that 'the plan' was to place man in the garden because there was no one to cultivate (work ) the ground. So--
The LORD God took the man and placed him in the orchard in Eden to care for it and to maintain it.
Like it or not-- that was God's plan for humankind. You might not find that satisfying, but God did-- "It was very good', He said.
How, or why, would these cycles end?
Age after age, season after season, summer and winter, springtime and harvest---- the cycles never end as long as the earth remains. (Gen 8:22) Eternal Life. Life everlasting. This is what scripture teaches. An age comes to an end, and with it, a new age begins.
- What do they mean in reference to the final judgment?
As others have pointed out-- you live your life and it is appointed to every man afterwards (you die) and your spirit faces judgment (the spirit returns to God). Books are opened (the record of your life-- the story of your human soul) and your life is weighed in the balance. If the balance tips in your favor- that is, the good outweighs the bad, you remain with Him in the kingdom. You enter into His service, a royal priesthood who are then sent as ministering spirits. In other words-- they continue on. They remain. Those who are weighed and found lacking-- God determines their fate. In His mercy, He considers your circumstances and judges fairly. That's the key point. He judges righteously and fairly. Like a Father disciplines a child he loves. Destruction? Well, I guess if it comes to that.... there is such a thing as "a bad seed." Also a fruitless branch. Those are cut off and thrown to the fire, not because God hates them, but because they don't fulfill His purposes. Not because He hates the branch, but because He loves the tree and it is for the good of the tree that it is pruned.
One soul judged for multiple lifetimes? Or ???
One life = one soul. Your soul is the record of your life, the story of your existence. Your spirit was sent by God-- breathed into you to minister and guide you along your (life/soul) path. Like a horse is led or guided and cared for by a horseman. The spirit of God is upon us and yet it is us who determine the extent to which we respond. Each soul is judged at it's end. That is, the spirit is judged regarding the job it did with respect to that soul it was responsible for. The soul is the mere record of that experience. Victorious spirits (who overcome the world) are given honor as champions, having run the race well and they remain in His rest until they are called to run again in His service. Multiple lifetimes? Yes, of course. Life eternal. For the runner who runs well, it is a joy to run again for Him.
