For instance I once met a woman who started talking about how she had been raped at one point in her life. Did I say she was somehow to blame by dressing inappropriately or inviting advances or that she should just get over it and do x, y and z (as if I have any right to tell her what to do).

I understand . I use to consume energy drinks that had the same effect on me so I quit drinking them.Oh, stop. No one is "victim blaming". Sheesh.
In all honesty Apache, you came here because you were looking for an answer. WHY oh WHY did God choose to unleash satan upon you once you self-baptized, after ALL YOU'VE DONE, like caring for a barking dog for 10 years, and let other Christians 'slide'?
You said yourself that not ALL Christians experienced what *you* experienced. What I tried to propose to you is that they may have experienced worse than you got. But you're so wrapped up in the "poor ME" stance, that you can't see that.
I don't WHY Apache, but I get a 'feeling' about you. Your 'journey' is JUST beginning. And I 'feel' that after some time has passed, you're going to be a strong asset in the Christian community.
While you claim that "nobody should be attacked by satan...", where is THAT written? Why not?
This whole Christian life is a test. Not a test because God doesn't know the outcome, but because WE don't know. I can decide to be a Christian, but what does that even mean? Does that mean I'll never suffer from another hardship again? Did you self-baptize because you figured if you did, that God would 'smile' upon you?
Jesus told us that if we persevere through the end (of our lives) we will be saved. He NEVER said that there wouldn't be any hardships during that time.
Sorry Apache, but I don't see you as a 'victim'. You're 41/42 years old, and because you don't have what you think you 'deserve'...after being through the non-stop barking dog for 10+ years, you seem to think that you're "owed" the 'good life' by God.
Maybe change your attitude, and things will fall into place...
Then again, you won't. As long as you believe that God "owes" you...

God was so good to Adam and Eve. He gave them perfection. They were so innocent that their nakedness was of no issue. There was no lust. No sin. No worries. No troubles. No burdens. No death of loved ones. God said that they could eat of all the lovely trees, except the one tree of death that was forbidden. Why did Adam and Eve have to eat of that tree of death when there were so many wonderful trees that our loving God gave them? What a different world it would be today if Adam & Eve would have loved God with all of their hearts and not eaten of that one particular tree.
Entrapment. Left to their own devices without anyone else interfering they never ate from the tree
Says it all when Eve points this out and she is the one exiled to this planet while the serpent gets to remain in the spirit realm

O.k. Here's your answer: YEAH! You grieved the Holy Spirit by not getting baptized, and thinking it was o.k. to baptize yourself, even though that's not a biblical doctrine. Like I said before, JESUS was baptized! He didn't baptize himself.
