Greetings members,
This verse has been popping up in my thoughts allot recently, and making me think more on it than any other time over the decades. It would be nice if any here would share their interpretation, and most of all, do you think this pertains only to un-belief of the gospel truth, or truth in general?
I have a friend who believes this is also for the church, today. Anyone out there who would like to give their take?
Thank you!

2Thess 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,
2Thess 2:10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
2Thess 2:11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false,
2Thess 2:12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

I think the orange are the ones Paul talks about.

Great topic.

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

  • because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
What is the truth?

The truth is something that comes from Someone.

Jesus Christ is the truth.

Every word that proceeds out of His mouth is the truth.

The fullness (threefold) of the truth is found in:

His Gospel
His Doctrine
His Commandments

It’s interesting to note that not obeying any one of these three truths can result is eternal condemnation.

Obeying His Gospel: 2 Thessalonians 1:8
Obeying His Doctrine: 2 John 9
Obeying His Commandments: 1 John 2:4

The Spirit of truth leads and guides us into all truth, if we will allow Him to.

The more we are filled with the Spirit, the more we will love; love Jesus Christ and love what He teaches.

It’s good to confess with our mouth that we love the truth, that we desire to be filled with the knowledge of the truth, and to ask for His grace to walk in the truth.

We must walk in the truth if we expect to worship in Spirit and truth.

  • for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie

The time is coming and is now upon us that God will send a strong delusion that will actually authorize the Antichrist to do signs wonders and miracles, for the purpose of deceiving those who refuse to love Jesus Christ, and what He teaches, so that they will be condemned.

I know this may sound a little straightforward but it’s the truth.

He did it in the Old Testament.

“If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him. But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken in order to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of bondage, to entice you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall put away the evil from your midst. Deuteronomy 13:1-5

A clearer translation of 2 Thess 2:9-12 -

The other's appearance, by the contrivance of Satan, will be full of power and pretended signs and wonders, and full of wicked deception for men who are going to destruction, because they refused to love the truth and be saved.

This is why God sends upon them a misleading influence, to make them believe what is false, so that all who have refused to believe the truth but have preferred disobedience may be condemned.

- - -

I think it's simple enough.

Why would someone refuse to love the truth?

Because it condemns them.

What can they do?

Confess!

It's the only solution to shame.

In verse 3 of that same chapter, 2 Thessalonians 2: 3, it says let no man deceive you and mentions about a falling away. Jesus also said this and that many will come in his name and deceive others, in Matthew 24: 4-5, Mark 13: 5-6, and Luke 21: 8. In 1 Timothy 4: 1 it expounds about the falling away says many will depart from the faith and how people will give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.

Chapter 3 of Proverbs says to acknowledge God in all of his way and lean not on your own understanding.

The question someone might want to ask is what dictates the walk. What dictates if a person is walking in God's ways or not.

Come now, @amigo de christo, you're getting awfully personal.

I'm passionate about words. I'm possessed of the Word and exhuberant for this very fact.

And to you my joy of sharing what I've learned about meaning is doting and strife?

Oh, I believe, amigo. I'm not convinced, I am certain, which is what it means to believe.

known as the bible and was written by paul himself .
Hurry and go run to your wise men so they can explain that away as well .
You all have no idea what you are doing . The bible is not complicated .
But all i see is folks doting on questions and strifes of words and THEY TWIST what the scrip meant .
And its no wonder you took that personal . IT WAS JUST a general reminder
but when the T RUTH is spoken if a man is in that error , ITS GONNA always seem as an attack to such a man .
YOU GO and you see for yourself .

I'm not certain about this, but I highly doubt Paul used the word "doting" in the sense you do, if at all. It doesn't even make sense.

Then you follow with:
"Friend i already kn ow you are . You love with all thine heart the wise wisdom of men .
Wish you loved the scrips like you love mens wisdom ."

What do you think you are proving here?
Or accomplishing?
Or witnessing about?

What you are trying to say?

Wonderful, thank you.

In this case, that doting is indulgence in meaningless religious vernacular which results in all those -isms people like to throw around whenever they think they know what I'm saying.

You call me all sorts of things when you won't even look up the words I use.

How do I know?

You can't even bring yourself to spell the common words right. You clearly don't care about your words.

2 Thessalonians 2:10 is indeed to all the church, for it was among the early church that the believing of a "lie" (vs. 11) occurred, that has caused the foretold "strong delusion"--which is still taught to this day. That was Paul's prophecy.

Peter also foretold of "false teachers" entering among the church early on teaching "destructive heresies" (2 Peter 2:1).

That lie and heresies was taught by certain among the church who, not seeing Jesus return, did not believe that among the many things He said "must shortly take place" (Rev. 1:1 and 22:6), that He would not come "quickly" or "shortly"--as He said--but would come in the distant future...which is now taught as the fulfillment of Daniel's 70th week. Which many even here still believe and vehemently preach.

All of that was the result of Jesus setting life and death, blessing and cursing before His early followers (just as Moses had done with Israel, telling them, "I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live" Deuteronomy 30:19). "First to the Jew and also to the Greek" (Romans 2:10). Which He did using Peter as that choice between life and death, blessing and cursing, in the form of who to follow, Peter a man of "flesh and blood", or what only comes "from the Father"...as it did with Peter and his knowing that Jesus was the Christ (Matthew 16:17). After which those certain among the early church--not believing what Jesus had said would "shortly come" began to revere Peter and develop their own alternative understanding of what Jesus meant into the false doctrine now still taught and still causing "strong delusion." Such are "the workings of Satan."

Does the truth matter anymore? If not, what does?

To ask such is to ask awry!

Truth is all there is, all else is delusion; the well from which disobedience is drawn.

All that matters is to believe the Word of God.

The question someone might want to ask is what dictates the walk. What dictates if a person is walking in God's ways or not.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:5
