A person is either saved or not. That is plain and simple no interpretation needed, it is straight forward. But, I have no intentions of taking any mark of any kind or even digital ID.
Do you think that you would end up not being saved just because of taking a physical mark if it's not made clear that doing so means you are rejecting Jesus Christ? If so, that would be ridiculous. God isn't going to condemn anyone for mistakenly taking a physical mark without knowing exactly what the repercussions would be. You can't just mistakenly do something that makes you unsaved. Being saved or not is not based on anything physical that you do, it's based on whether you believe in your heart or not (Romans 10:9-13).

Why would there be a need for a spiritual opposite with the MoB?
Because that would be consistent with how the book of Revelation is written. It only makes sense that both are spiritual or both are physical. The book of Revelation is primarily a book about spiritual truths and realities that are described symbolically.

Tell me your understanding of the mark of the beast. Having it means someone is not saved. Agree? So, if people are going to be forced to take a physical mark one day, it would have to be one where it's made clear that by taking it you are showing that you are rejecting Jesus Christ. So, is that your understanding of the mark of the beast? You think everyone will be forced to choose whether or not they will take a physical mark that they know means by taking it they are showing that they are rejecting Jesus Christ? Isn't salvation a matter of believing in the heart (Romans 10:9-13)? Why would a physical mark be the means by which people decide whether to accept or reject Christ rather than deciding in their hearts?

The word “mark” is translated from the Greek charagma (Strong’s Greek concordance reference #5480) as “a scratch or etching, ie stamp (as a badge of servitude), or sculptured figure (statue): graven image.” In the Roman context charagma was the imperial stamp that was placed on official documents. It was also a “badge of servitude” etched, inscribed or branded on slaves to designate ownership. Soldiers often branded themselves with the name of their favorite general and religious cult devotees placed tattoos of their favorite gods as symbolic of their devotion and allegiance.[29]
___

This brings me back to how in the OT, when a slave was to be set free, they could choose to stay with their master and serve him the rest of their life. So their master would bore a hole through their ear (a mark) signifying lifelong servanthood.

Salvation is never lost which means a believer can’t be in a state of receiving the mark at the believer’s death.

Revelation 19
20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

Revalation 20
7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Only spiritual beings are cast into the lake of fire before the judgement day
Revelation 19:20 & Revelation 20:11-15 both represent the final judgement in parallel teachings, this judgement is also seen in Revelation 11:18

The Beast & False Prophet will be future individual human men, they will be cast living into the lake of fire along with untold millions of other unsaved wicked

@David in NJ - I couldn't quote your post for some reason this is for you too. sml

Do you both agree that the revelation given in this book was communicated in signs? John says so himself — Rev 1:1 says Jesus ἐσήμανεν it, "signified" it, made it known by sign. So I'll assume we're agreed there.

If that's so, then I don't think either of you believes a literal steel blade protrudes from Jesus' mouth in 19:15. The word there is ῥομφαία — a large Thracian broadsword, a real physical weapon, the same word the LXX uses for Goliath's sword. It isn't a "spiritual sword" word. It's as literal a sword as Greek has. And yet 19:21 says the nations were slain with the sword proceeding out of his mouth. Nobody reads that as dental cutlery. Everyone reads it as his word, his verdict, his spoken judgment.

That's not an isolated case. Consider what else the book asks us to take as sign:
  • Jesus is a Lamb with seven horns and seven eyes (5:6). The central figure of the entire book is a symbol.
  • The seven stars are explicitly decoded as the angels of the churches, the lampstands as the churches (1:20). The book interprets itself.
  • The dragon is explicitly identified as "that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan" (12:9).
  • The angel tells John outright that the waters are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues (17:15), that the seven heads are seven mountains, and that the woman is a city (17:9, 18).
  • The great city is called Sodom and Egypt — and the text supplies its own reading key: πνευματικῶς, "figuratively" (11:8).
  • A chain binds a spirit being (20:1). What links would hold a spirit?
  • A woman clothed with the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with twelve stars (12:1).
So the book announces itself as sign, decodes its own images as sign, and hands us a Lamb, a dragon, a woman, a city, and a mouth-sword. Then we arrive at chapter 13 — and suddenly the beast is granted to be symbolic, but his mark is a physical object applied to skin?

The mark's counterpart is right there in the same book: God's servants are sealed on their foreheads (7:3), the 144,000 have the Father's name written on their foreheads (14:1), and his servants shall see his face and his name shall be on their foreheads (22:4). If that seal is a badge of ownership and allegiance rather than ink, why is the beast's mark ink?

And the hand-and-forehead pairing isn't arbitrary. It comes straight out of Deuteronomy: "thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes" (6:8; cf. 11:18, Ex 13:9, 16). Israel was never handed a literal object to fix to her skull. Hand and forehead are the standard biblical shorthand for what you do and what you think — deed and allegiance. The beast is counterfeiting the Shema.

YES it does for Satan's kingdom is on this earth.

"The Beast" is symbolic in that it typifies a ferocious fearsome powerful agenda from literal person(s)/group/system on this earth.

Notice that a angel is spirit.
As such there are two possibilities:
a.) the Angel(s) makes a spiritual mark
b.) the Angel(s) actually make a physical mark

EXCELLENT

Just as there was a literal "binding on the forehead and hand" so too will there be a literal mark for those who join in the Final Rebellion.

You believe the mark is physical because it fits your belief system. I believe the mark is a trait or distinguishing feature because it fits my belief system. So how do we determine which view is right? EVERY single thing has to mesh perfectly together with no contradictions. When a belief system does that then it is the correct belief system.

In Rev every occurrence of 'mark' & 'beast' together the Greek word for 'mark' is charagma

For people in the MOTB time, unless there is a mark that can be seen with their eyes on the head or hand of the person how will they now whether that person has the MOTB ?

I believe BOTH spiritual and physical

In Deuteronomy which you quoted, God commanded a physical mark/binding that represented the spiritual Way to think & act.

In Revelation we have the same = a physical mark that represents Satans kingdom on earth = "for a short time"

God's words/Holy Scriptures do "mesh perfectly together"

SHOCKER = there are contradictions in the Scriptures = God intended ones for us to solve!!!

Absolutely yet in Revelation the Greek word 'charagma' is used when referring to the MOTB
Without a visible mark on the head or hand that others can see with their eyes how will anyone know if the person they are dealing with has it ?

And what dictionary says the word "mark" means darken?
What I tried to convey is that I believe the "mark" means "having the understanding darkened" (Ephesians 4:18)

The difference between the literal-spiritual camps is the way the whole text of Revelation is approached.

Using the text to determine the meaning of the words, by comparing how the same word is used elsewhere in the same book, is the only reliable way I know of determining the meaning of a word in highly figurative language.

A dictionary will not tell you the meaning of "sword" in Rev 1 ... even you would agree with that, I think.

If he was to address your points then he would have to admit that his hermeneutics are inconsistent and contradictory.
I don't think they use any rules (hermeneutics) to decipher this highly metaphorical text.

You make a good point about people being physically forced to take the mark whether they want to or not. In a totalitarian regime people are coerced into compliance. In that case, the mark means nothing if the person's faith is in Jesus Christ.

They had a choice to die but instead chose to live by taking the 'mark'
They chose flesh life rather than being killed for their faith - they willingly took the 'mark'
