It's not important for me. Humans kill other humans for a variety for reasons. It seems to be important for you though.

These men embraced the philosophy of “willing to do bad things for the greater good.”

I believe people have to want to be redeemed in order for it to happen.
… the mixing of the role of the church with the role of the state in the 4th century; the formation of the church-state.

Most impressive.
As I've said, if we were to become a pacifist nation, we would lose it. So I think it behooves us to be practical. You are the only Christian I've ever met that doesn't believe in killing in self defense or in the defense of one's family. And certainly the only one that believes Christians shouldn't serve in roles that require lethal force. How does the world work?
The opposite of the way, antagonistic to the way, Jesus works.

To bring it back to the beginning of our discussion, I believe Christians should be willing to do what is necessary for the greater good. That includes going against the golden rule.

I appreciate your candidness but I’m deeply concerned that you think the word / teaching of Jesus is divorced from reality. Have you discussed it with another pastor?
The apostles didn’t think his word / teaching is divorced from reality. They were willing to die for the reality, and did.
It’s never necessary for a follower of Jesus to disobey his teaching and not follow his example. Disobeying his teaching and not following his example is what unbelievers do.
I believe going against the Golden Rule is going against my teacher -> Jesus.
