I mean absolutely no ill to those who have shared, but I honestly feel odd about this. It brings into question the heart's motive. Do I do good deeds to be seen of men, or do I do what I do as unto God alone and to bring Christ to others?
Matthew 6:1
“Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.”
Loving our neighbor means praying for them even if they aren't kind toward us. It means praying for our enemies, and if we see them in need, being willing to do what's in our power to meet that need. Loving our neighbor may mean being willing to suffer if it means they will see Jesus in us and through our actions of steadfast faith. It may mean apologizing where there is a perceived wrong, whether you were right or not, or admitting where you are wrong and humbling yourself so that you don't bring dishonor to the name of Christ. It may mean offering to help with a task in their yard, or washing their laundry, doing grocery shopping for someone who is unable to drive. It's forgiving and being kind to someone who's been unkind to you or mistreated you. Maybe letting that kid mow your yard for $20 even if you just mowed it 2 days ago. If may be taking an hour out of your busy day to bring bottled water and gas to a stranded family on the side of the road. It may mean giving a Subway gift card to a homeless vet on a hot day so he can get out of the sun and have a drink and a couple of meals in an air-conditioned environment. It may mean stopping to pick up that hitchhiker, praying for them, and buying them some food and water when you drop them off.
Hebrews 13:2
“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
There are all sorts of examples of what it looks like to love our neighbors. In these days we are in, and especially as time moves forward when evil is increasing and the love of many grows cold, loving our neighbor will be more and more challenging. Betrayals will come. Persecution will increase. Remain humble. Love suffers! Remember that Jesus loved His enemies. Let the compassion of God flow. Ask for His eyes to see. Love much, and forgive often.
