Acts 2:1-6 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and [one] sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

In this context, "tongues" refers to languages. According to Strong's Greek dictionary (entry #1100), the word glossa implies a language, specifically one that the speaker did not naturally acquire.

When the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and everyone present, the individuals themselves were not the originators of the speech. Instead, the Holy Spirit spoke through them.

1 Co 14:4
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

It's clear that there is a form of tongues that no one understands but God. A blind man may argue there is no light from the sun but those that have eyes to see, know other wise

Yanking Scriptures out of context can defend ANY practice.

One can take a verse out of context and defend golden calf worship because, after all, the Israelites did it.

Nonsense babbling these days is NOT a repeat of the Acts 2 miracle, no matter how one twists the narrative.

It's nonsense to you because you are spiritually blind. Show from the scripture that there is not a tongue that only God can understand. It's clear from the entire context of 1Cor 14 that Paul recognizes unknown tongues but that prophecy is better. However, in your error you will probably say prophecy has ceased.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!
I get a kick out of people's replies like yours since you all assume I have just fallen off the turnip truck yesterday.

1st of all, you are demanding that I prove a negative. Perhaps you should return to logic class and look that one up.

2nd, you charismatics ALL assume that you are the only enlightened ones in all of Christianity with your special knowledge of so called spiritual gifts. That is just old fashioned Gnosticism, quite frankly.

3rd: you guys grab onto a word from the KJV that is italicized ( unknown ): meaning it was added by the translators and was not from the pen of Paul. Those tongues Paul is speaking of are KNOWN languages like Greek, Italian, Latin, Aramaic, Slavic, etc. We see this fact in the narrative of Acts. Fifteen nationalities were present and they HEARD the word of God in their OWN languages. The miracle was not the spoken word; it was the HEARD word. That much is obvious in the text.

Finally: I was saved in an United Pentecostal Church in Jan 1980 and followed that doctrine for ten years until I went to Bible College and ACTUALLY studied Scripture, Greek and Church history (among others). I know your doctrine better than you have demonstrated you do.

I have yet to meet a Charismatic who knows the history of the church at Corinth and why Paul was moved by the Holy Spirit to address that mess. You are no exception.

Guess again. The position isn't dependent on the word "unknown" It's hinged on this fact ...and this IS in the greek"

1 Co 14:2
speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Men understand Greek, Latin, and Aramaic...they do not understand the tongue that only God understands because in the Spirit, they speak MYSTERIES. This is clearly stated in the text.

LOL...you didn't learn much. Just enough to puff you up and make you think higher of yourself than you should.

Please, I have studied the scriptures for over 50 years and I am well acquainted with the history of Corinthian idolatry. That's not what Paul was addressing in 1Cor 14:2. He clearly sanctioned it as speaking to God alone. Humble yourself and you might actually learn something. Until then, you are like a blind man arguing that light doesn't exist.

So you say.
But you are deceived. The Greek you just posted is Nestle-Aland, Westcott-Hort corruption.
You charismatics are all alike.
Ya'll have swallowed the Copeland-Hinn heresies.

LOL...it is the same in the Textus Receptus. There is no variance in the texts in this passage, Man, you are UNLEARNED

There are false charismatics but it's sheer ignorance to say they are all the same. Is that who you followed for 10 years? Copeland-Hinn? Good thing you got away but you threw out the baby with the bathwater.
