Jesus taking away our sin means he forgave the guilt of that sin and ended its power over us. This is explained in Hebrews. It says this is true because of the superior ministry and sacrifice of Jesus. You make a horrible error in judgement when you say the church does not know this.
Forgave the guilt of that sin, but not the sin, itself? Nonsense, as are most of the doctrines of the Reformation, including OSAS. Jesus came to "take away our sin." From where? The SOURCE. The old man, the sin nature itself, leaving us clean of all unrighteousness, which in 1 John 3 is lawlessness - mortal sins unto death.
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be
in the likeness of
His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with
Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
It is Epi who does not understand what the sacrifice of Jesus does. He's oblivious to Jesus being the blood sacrifice God requires by which men are forgiven and declared righteous, apart from the works of the law.
He is sure you can only be declared righteous by being righteous. No one is good enough to be declared righteous that way, because no one is righteous all of the time. A declaration of righteousness can only be given as a free gift of God's grace through faith in his forgiveness. One sin keeps you from being declared righteous on the basis of your works of righteousness.
18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
Which is interesting considering that you have some beliefs that are decidedly Reformed. For example, you say no born again person can sin unto death. You're OSAS and don't realize it.
The doctrines of the Reformation lead to death.
18 For when they speak great swelling
words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known
it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.”
ALL sin is unto death. In Christ,
ALL sin is forgiven. There is no sin that Christ's ministry and sacrrifice can not forgive that the Levitical ministry and sacrifice couldn't:
Acts 13:38-39
38Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.
39Through Him everyone who believes is justified from everything from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
The division of sins that could be forgiven, and sins that could not be forgiven under the Levitical system disappeared with the institution of the New Covenant and the unveiling of Christ's superior and more effective ministry and sacrifice. The division of sin unto death and sin that is not unto death no longer exists (with the exception of blasphemy of the Spirit, of course, a.k.a. deliberate and informed unbelief in the face of the testimony of the Holy Spirit). Christ can forgive
ALL sin.
1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin, and
there is sin not leading to death.
