Absolutely. The first order of business should have been to CLEAN HOUSE THOROUGHLY. And yet he made mistake after mistake in the people he appointed to various positions, then had to fire them, while the Obama *old guard* consolidated their position and the Deep State went on the offensive. I was just discussing that with my dad this morning. He said Trump is not a politician, so heavily relies on the recommendations of those around him...which ultimately finds him appointing people who are as much part of the "swampus creaturus" phylum as those on the other side of the aisle. Sometimes...I would go so far to say that most times, conspiracy theories are actually true...Yeah, nice house! I do have to agree that as a man, I rate Trump pretty low (but I feel that way about most NY and NJ people). He is a person I would not associate with.

President Barack Obama’s greatest economic achievement was to prevent the Great Recession from spiraling into a full-blown depression.

By the time Obama was inaugurated in 2009, the unemployment rate had spiked from 5 percent to 7.8 percent, on its way to 10 percent a few months later. A rising tide of middle-class families were losing homes, turning to food stamps and seeking government-sponsored health care for the first time.

Yet Obama handed Trump the reins of an economy with a 4.7 percent unemployment rate; 75 consecutive months of job growth;rising stock prices, home values, corporate profits and consumer confidence; low inflation; and, following several years of sluggish income growth, a record spike in middle-class incomes.

In 2016, increases in hourly earnings accelerated, which, when combined with increased rates of employment, helped boost overall household incomes. Real household debt is lower than it was in 2006.

"As 2016 ends, the U.S. labor market is in its best shape since the recession, with nearly every measure of the market at its most favorable level in years," economist Jed Kolko concluded in his end-of-the-year report for the jobs website Indeed.

In other words, Obama left the economy in much better shape than he inherited it, even if it remains imperfect for every American.

"In general, the response to the Great Recession was forceful but sensible," Edward Glaeser, a Harvard University economist, told us last year. "There were few massive mistakes on his watch."

Obama oversaw several far-reaching programs designed to prevent a chain reaction of collapse. Two began under Bush. One was the $426 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, which helped stabilize the financial industry. The other was the auto bailout, which helped set the stage for a genuine rebound in the auto industry later in Obama’s tenure. Within a few years, car sales were hitting record highs.

In the two years when he had a Democratic-controlled Congress, Obama proceeded to enact a roughly $800 billion stimulus bill that included federal spending on infrastructure, tax cuts and fiscal help help for cash-strapped states. While food stamp use and poverty rates have eased, they still haven’t returned to their pre-recession levels. Gross domestic product growth — the engine of long-term economic prosperity — remains sluggish, even after the recession officially transitioned into the recovery.

Job gains have been relatively modest in scale compared to some previous recoveries. And even those who credit Obama’s actions worry about a declining labor-force participation rate, which hasn’t been this low since the 1970s. Part of this is due to retirements by baby boomers, but not all of it, and economists aren’t entirely sure why a relatively large number of Americans have decided to do things other than work.

All told, Obama took an economy with a big hole in it and was able to fill it in and give it stability, said Brookings Institution economist Gary Burtless. That stability was passed on to Trump.

Things were so well-oiled, Trump needed to defend himself by saying he had “inherited a mess” from Obama. It’s such a mess that Trump didn’t hesitate to take credit for it when the final economic reports of the Obama years were released.

The government’s January economic report said the economy added 227,000 jobs in January and unemployment was 4.8 percent, a level the Federal Reserve considers an indication of full employment.

When Obama took office January 2009, unemployment was 7.9 percent and, as a result of the financial crisis he inherited, rose to 10 percent later that year. It has steadily declined since then. Over the last five years, monthly job gains have averaged over 200,000, which the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco characterized as a strong pace relative to historical experience.


According to the report, wages are beginning to show signs of increasing as more jobs are opening up and the job market is tightening. The ratio of job openings to the number of unemployed looking for those openings was 1:3. In July of 2009, the ratio stood at 6:6.

The housing recovery is being driven by a strong labor market. Home building is up 10.5 percent compared to January 2016 and overall permits are outpacing housing starts, indicating continued rebound.


Manufacturing activity is increasing as well. According to the Philadelphia Federal Reserve’s January report, their index for manufacturing activity in their region has remained positive for six consecutive months and is now the highest since November 2014.

According to the Commerce Department’s January report, over the past years, total retails sales have risen 5.6 percent, which they conclude is likely a reflection of an improving job market.

The federal deficit in relation to the size of the economy did grow in fiscal year 2016, primarily due to a retroactive extension of tax breaks for corporation and individuals. But the increase to 2.9 percent of GDP from 2.5 percent in 2015 was the first increase after six straight years of decline.

There are plenty of “buts” associated with any economic report and this is no exception:

But the underemployment rate (9.1 percent, which includes those working part-time but seeking full-time employment) is still high by historic standards. But many of the new jobs are lower paying jobs. But wages didn’t increase as much as the Federal Reserve and many economists expected. But the affordable housing supply is still expected to shrink.

That being said, the economy Trump inherited is one in which the labor market is tight, housing and manufacturing are improving and wages are beginning to increase. Trump is inheriting an economy with one of the lowest jobless rates of any incoming president in modern times. Only Richard Nixon and George W. Bush took over with lower rates.

True to form, Trump, who previously called the unemployment rate a “hoax,” quickly tried to take credit for the positive economic data, attributing it to his election. However, the report was based on surveys conducted before he took office and reflected trends developing well before his election.

It reflects the economy Trump is inheriting. It’s not spectacular, but it’s stable and one economist generally characterized as getting stronger and worthy of optimism.

I don’t mean to gloss over the negatives. There’s still plenty to worry about in this economy. Having a job or better chances of getting one doesn’t eliminate anxiety over economic security. Income inequality and all that comes with it is still embedded. Retirement is still elusive for many, as is health care.

But the big picture economic reports show positive trends. The recovery was slow, but an economy that is near full employment and in the early stages of wage increases isn’t a bad hand-off. Instead of a mess, Trump has some economic coattails to ride.

Obama inherited a Great Recession. Trump inherited a primed pump.

One particular lie, often stated by right-of-center advocates, is the statement....“if Barack Obama wanted to increase taxes on the rich, stop the wars, pass a budget...blah, blah.....he could have chosen to do so because he had “total control” of the House and Senate for two full years.”


Sometimes the “two full years” is omitted from the statement......but the lie is spread nevertheless, by the “total control of Congress” phrase.


Let’s clear that all up, shall we?


Starting January 2009, at the beginning of the 111th Congress, in the month that Barack Obama was inaugurated president, the House of Representatives was made up of 257 Democrats and 178 Republicans. There is no question that Democrats had total control in the House from 2009-2011.


Even with numerous “blue-dog” (allegedly fiscally conservative) Democrats often voting with Republicans.....Speaker Pelosi had little difficulty passing legislation in the House. The House does not have the pernicious filibuster rule which the Senate uses. A majority vote in the House is all that’s necessary to pass legislation, except in rare occurrences (treaty ratification, overriding a presidential veto).



Okay, that’s the House during the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency. For a lie to prosper, as it were, there needs to be a shred of truth woven inside the lie. It is absolutely true that from 2009-2011, Democrats and President Obama had “total control” of the House of Representatives.


But legislation does not become law without the Senate.


The Senate operates with the 60-vote-requirement filibuster rule. There are 100 Senate seats, and it takes 60 Senate votes for “closure” on a piece of legislation....to bring that piece of legislation to the floor of the Senate for amendments and a final vote....that final vote is decided by a simple majority in most cases. But it takes 60 Senate votes to even have a chance of being voted upon.


“Total control”, then, of the Senate requires 60 Democratic or Republican Senators.




On January 20th, 2009, 57 Senate seats were held by Democrats with 2 Independents (Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman) caucusing with the Democrats...which gave Democrats 59 mostly-reliable Democratic votes in the Senate, one shy of filibuster-proof “total control.” Republicans held 41 seats.


The 59 number in January, 2009 included Ted Kennedy and Al Franken. Kennedy had a seizure during an Obama inaugural luncheon and never returned to vote in the Senate.....and Al Franken was not officially seated until July 7th, 2009 (hotly contested recount demanded by Norm Coleman.)


The real Democratic Senate seat number in January, 2009 was 55 Democrats plus 2 Independents equaling 57 Senate seats.



An aside....it was during this time that Obama’s “stimulus” was passed. No Republicans in the House voted for the stimulus. However, in the Senate.....and because Democrats didn’t have “total control” of that chamber.....three Republicans.....Snowe, Collins and Specter, voted to break a filibuster guaranteeing it’s passage.


Then in April, 2009, Republican Senator Arlen Specter became a Democrat. Kennedy was still at home, dying, and Al Franken was still not seated. Score in April, 2009....Democratic votes 58.


In May, 2009, Robert Byrd got sick and did not return to the Senate until July 21, 2009. Even though Franken was finally seated July 7, 2009 and Byrd returned on July 21.....Democrats still only had 59 votes in the Senate because Kennedy never returned, dying on August 25, 2009.


Kennedy’s empty seat was temporarily filled by Paul Kirk but not until September 24, 2009.


The swearing in of Kirk finally gave Democrats 60 votes (at least potentially) in the Senate. “Total control” of Congress by Democrats lasted all of 4 months. From September 24, 2009 through February 4, 2010...at which point Scott Brown, a Republican, was sworn in to replace Kennedy’s Massachusetts seat.


The truth....then....is this: Democrats had “total control” of the House of Representatives from 2009-2011, 2 full years. Democrats, and therefore, Obama, had “total control” of the Senate from September 24, 2009 until February 4, 2010. A grand total of 4 months.


Did President Obama have “total control” of Congress? Yes, for 4 entire months. And it was during that very small time window that Obamacare was passed in the Senate with 60 all-Democratic votes.


Did President Obama have “total control’ of Congress during his first two years as president? Absolutely not and any assertions to the contrary.....as you can plainly see in the above chronology....is a lie.
