strikes me as another term for "opposer" usually? Although another good def seems to be that of ppl who are just harassing, wont answer direct Qs, deflect, worm, etc maybe
You may be right with both definitions:

1) An "opposer" especially against me and my beliefs.

2) One who wants stir up without involvement or investment or risk to himself. Purpose?

Anyone want to try for another... a third that is?

A person can also be specifically persecuted FOR their incorrect beliefs.

The fact that Group A is persecuted does not mean that Group A holds the most correct beliefs or is the most righteous. Incorrect/unrighteous groups are persecuted too.

Persecution, I am speaking Doctrine...
Core-
God of the Jews, Christ Jesus

Amongst believers...in God of Jews- or in God & Christ Jesus Converted...no - not persecution. Admonishment? Yes. Correction? Yes.

Beyond Core- you are now talking basically the disagreements that are which occur here.
Disagreements about man MADE Doctrines, which creates Multiple Denominations...
For Example-
Baptism with water, Holy Spirit, or Both?
Water immersion or sprinkle?
Sabbath day?
Dance, make-up?
Cut hair?
Must attend Church, or doesn't matter
Marriage, divorce, abortions?
Tattoos, drink alcohol
Day Jesus died,
Mary exalted?

Etc.

Right or Wrong, doesn't really matter IMO.
Each individual will mimic parents/ friend/pastor..or learn (all at different paces) on their own and BE Content in what they Believe.

Glory to God,

My wife says I could make money doing impressions, but I'm not sure I could do one of somebody that old.

I count his age as only 46 at the end. You are according to your profile 56. Just act like you did 10 years ago and that might just cover it very well!

Update: I'm afraid I haven't made myself very clear. My intentions were to provoke critical/analytical thought harnessed by Scripture--not to solicit personal suggestions per se (not that I couldn't use some, of course). With all of the bright hearts and minds I've encountered so far, in the end we all go away with some useful knowledge.
------------------------------------------------

Peter was given the keys to the kingdom!
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

He gave the same message to the children of Israel, the Gentiles and then to the lost tribes of Israel.
Act 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Act 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The gift of the Holy Ghost is eternal life!

Sorry, I'm into Christ-centric. No offense.

To be "Christ-centric" is to obey Paul's epistles, since Jesus Himself called Paul into ministry...

Act 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Act 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Act 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Act 9:10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
Act 9:11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
Act 9:12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
Act 9:13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
Act 9:14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
Act 9:15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

Paul suffered the loss of all things that he may win Christ...

Philippians 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
[8] Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

God Bless!

Paul was an Apostle of Jesus Christ. Acts 2.42 speaks of the early believers continuing steadfastly in the Apostles' doctrine.

Even so! Some use the word, troll, apparently knowing just what they mean, but I usually don't know what they mean and I usually don't ask unless it really somehow might make a difference to me and how I would or should react.

A Norwegian folk tale "billly goats gruff", was about a Troll, ( hungry, aggressive, mean ) creature that lived under a bridge, lying in wait for a Goat to cross the bridge and snatch the goat to eat it.

State of Michigan is two pensulias ... about the 1960's A Bridge was erected to Connect the two pensulias, where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. The people in the UP (Upper Pensulia, were Called Upers) after the Bridge was built, the Upers began calling the people Below- Lower geographically - Lower Pensulia- TROLLS, because they lived "under" the Bridge.

An internet Troll is someone who FOR example reads over others posts, tweets, etc. Offers no dialogue in conversation...but jumps IN for the intent to Attack.

And uh maybe 1970's ?? Little teeny Troll figures...were in Vending machines, gum-ball type machines. Wild hair in Numerous colors, like the photo shown.
Another toy gimmick I presume.

Glory to God,

Oh yes! My wife had already left some time before me.

We were drawn by God to that assembly definitely but for an at the first unknown reason. We guessed it was due to one elderly widow who lived alone. We were wrong. It was for the pastor and his wife. We had been there for several years when the pastor's wife died in 2012 after 66 years of marriage. She left her husband a widower, a man who scarcely knew how to come in out of the rain, unless it related directly to his ministry. He was and is a man of God. [He is 95 now and I'll be visiting him tomorrow morning. He continues living alone and ministering, but that is a whole other testimony.]

His wife had handled all things secular and stood by him in every physical or spiritual need. My wife helped his wife closely during those painful final months of her natural life. When she was gone he was an old man who needed a whole lot of help, and for the most part that fell to me. For that man alone, God had me stay in the church even when my wife could no longer tolerate what they were trying to do to that frail, but always dedicated to God, old man, the pastor. He was under attack because someone wanted his position. The attack was not directed at me... until I stood up in his defense.

Under pressure he was out in October of 2018. That was the end for me as well... but only the end in that place. One of the two instigators against him wanted me to stay. The other one was willing for me to stay if I would keep my mouth shut about the situation.

Had my pastor died any time after his wife did, I would have been gone along with my wife. God had already let me know that much. I stayed on for the old pastor. God required it of me. I could not be a part of the even fellowship group that had allowed the event... even though only the two I mentioned, a man and a woman, were the direct instigators.
Isn't it wonderful when God makes His providence so plain like that? (When I pray in the morning, I ask God to direct my feet only in the path of those who are hungry and ready to see His love. He rarely disappoints me, so to speak.)

I had a similar experience with a young pastor. There were no real health issues involved, but he was being ostracized by half of the church for believing and preaching (very subtly) error which was a legitimate claim, in fact.

But the way the objectors went about trying to deal with the problem was abysmal. I was quite fond of him and he had pure motives. It was so plain to see for anyone with an ounce of spiritual discernment. Before his views were made plain he was considered by all to be a model pastor. It was his first assignment out of seminary. I supported him and his family as best I could. It was assumed that I held sympathy with his doctrinal error. I refused to defend myself against such an assumption. I never uttered a word to validate it. After all, of what value is my reputation before a brood of evil surmisers?

The church was split and has never recovered to its former level of mission work. The pastor went on to shepherd the largest church of my denomination in the state of Pennsylvania and then to another big church in Tampa, Florida. Last I heard, he had abandoned or kept the error to himself. I eventually moved my membership to a small church 30 miles away.

If you had a plurality of Elders as scripture indicates there would be no pastors to leave for.
I'm not certain that having a plurality of elders is the only biblical model for leadership.

There is the Moses model...

Utterly erroneous
To single out one man save Christ as the especial arbiter of truth is unsound, at best. I believe we are at an impasse. There appears to be a great gulf fixed between us. If you expect to convince me that an apostle has precedence over Christ in anything, you have a rough row to hoe, my friend.

All it means to me is the confirmation that people die, but I kinda already figured that out.

ah well i didnt want to comment too much, dont know his age, etc...but that would be irrelevant to me anyway i guess; strokes are accepted as normal now, but i tell you that they are not a normal part of aging, fwiw. Strokes are self-inflicted, even, imo

You put words into my mouth.

The Word of God is NOT divided. It is the Word cover to cover, and for you to think that Jesus takes precedence over Paul or any other Apostle in his word, is in error due to the fact that Paul's epistles (and all the Apostles) are Holy Ghost inspired (again, this is ALL the Word of God). I pointed this out, to-wit Paul's calling into the ministry being a chosen vessel unto the Lord.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

God Bless!

Nearly everything you have said has been effectively glorifying the apostle Paul. Your words are recorded for all to see. I'm not falling for your trap. You touted an apostle. I responded by lifting up Christ. If you're just trying to pick a fight, then be off with you.

Nearly everything you have said has been effectively glorifying the apostle Paul.

I pointed out that Paul was an Apostle, which you seemed to have a problem with from the start, saying in post#27 in reply to the five fold ministry, gifts of the spirit and fruit of the spirit...

"Sounds awfully Pauline-centric."

Your words are recorded for all to see.

And so are yours.

I'm not falling for your trap.

Your imagination.

You touted an apostle. I responded by lifting up Christ.

From the start you seemed to have a dislike for Paul's writing.

The Word of God is NOT divided.

If you're just trying to pick a fight, then be off with you.

No fight. Just keeping the record straight.

God Bless!

Well of course they aren't a normal part of aging. Neither is death. Unnatural, and only happening because something is terribly wrong.

Make of it what you will. A man in his seventies, 3 weeks after retiring, dies from a stroke. There are worse ways to go, do you think?

Much love!
