Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
The text indicates that the eyes of both of them were opened, meaning that each of them gained new understanding, perception, and discernment. New knowledge builds on prior knowledge. In this case, knowing themselves to be guilty this lead to the knowledge of vulnerability and intimacy. Literally speaking, these two people are subject to harm, i.e. punishment from God. Psychologically, this feeling manifests as the need to cover the body. The didn't understand the concept of naked until they understood the concept of harm.
