You got an "F" on the test.

Here is the correct answer....

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Another pop question....is water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ both word and deed?

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

and what about the other half Jn 20:23 who sins you retain?

That was Jesus giving them authority for water baptizing in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, starting to be used by them in Acts 2:38.

Yes, in the bread of life discourse Jesus associates belief with eating his flesh.

So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.

It's right there, plain as day.

Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.

and there.

40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

And it's very obvious by the parallel verses here.
Thank you.

In the Lords Prayer it says “give us this day our daily bread”. What is that daily bread we are asking Him to give us?

I appreciate it.

In the bread of life discourse He told us we must eat/drink his body/blood. At The Last Supper he showed us how to eat/drink his body/blood. How does what he told us to do and showed us how to do it match up with the interpretation you were taught?

I understand that is what YOU were taught what He meant in the bread of life discourse; we must believe in Him. But the Jews that he was talking to thought he literally meant eat him and that is why they walked away because it was a hard saying. After all, they already believed in Him, that is why they were following him. So why was Jesus telling them they must eat him when all he had to say is “you only have to believe in me to have eternal life”. If He only meant that they must believe in Him, why did they walk away? I am trying to figure out the interpretation You were taught. Who taught you that interpretation? I would like to go to the source to (hopefully) better understand it.

Thank you...Mary

Jesus gave them that authority
It is his church
Jn 15:5
....to first be used here...

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

....not, go to a black box with a priest in it for the remission of sins.

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I don't recall anyone teaching me that interpretation. I've read it elsewhere, but it was obvious to me before that.
Thanks Renniks.

2,000 years ago the Jews that Jesus was talking too that day thought he literally meant eat him. That is why they walked away and that is why Jesus said it was a hard saying.

1,995 years ago
Paul asked the rhetorical question Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

1,800 years ago in a historical ancient writing called Octavius dialogue the Christians were accused of being cannibals because it was thought by non-Christians they were eating Christ at their church gatherings.

Fast forward to the 21st Century and it is "obvious" to Renniks that it really wasn't a hard saying because what Jesus really meant was that all we had to do is believe in him.....even though in the first 150 years of Christianity they clearly taught opposite of what was obvious to you. Does that concern you?

The black box(confessional booth) is a fire escape?

Can we find such an invention in the Bible?

Do you know when the first black boxes were created and used as confessional's in history?

I never said that. Quite making stuff up.
You are right Renniks. You "never said that" you didn't think it was a hard saying. But it seemed pretty easy for you to figure out what Jesus really meant when he said we must eat him: eat him = believe in him

Would you care to address the rest of my post showing that for the first 150 years of Christianity it taught different then what you teach today, 2,000 years later?

Patient Mary

2,000 years ago the Jews that Jesus was talking too that day thought he literally meant eat him. That is why they walked away and that is why Jesus said it was a hard saying.
Well if I was calvinist, I would say the hard saying was that no one can come to the father unless drawn.
But I don't believe that's it.
And it wasn't JUST believing in him. It was WHAT he told them to believe.
What had Jesus said that they considered a “hard saying” (v.60)? Catholics say they were speaking of when He said they had to eat his flesh and drink His blood (v.56), but the Jesus' answer indicates otherwise. When He asked, “What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before?” (v.62), it shows they were having trouble believing when He said He came down from heaven (v.58). He was saying, “If you see me go back to heaven where I came from, will you believe I came down from heaven?” They knew He was born in Bethlehem, and since they knew souls did not pre-exist, they knew He was saying He was God. And that’s what they found to be “a hard saying.” These disciples were following only because they tasted the bread he multiplied (8:26). Announcing He was God was too much for them. John once again emphasizes the Lord’s deity when he says He “knew in Himself” what they were saying (v.61)

When he said " eat my flesh" they flat out sneered at him.
They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

It wasn't just the bread metaphor, although they may have been confused by it.

He put himself on the same level as Yahweh! To the Jews this was blasphemy. It was too much for those following because they thought he was going to set up an Earthly kingdom and defeat the Romans, and hey, maybe pass out the free bread that he could create every day!
