Guys, @face2face and @quietthinker, please don't butt heads here.

    Difficulty Reconciling

    Anyone?

    Difficulty Reconciling

Well, I really believed I was doing that, but, according to God, apparently, I was trying to pay for my sins, and I guess I don't know how to stop trying to pay for my sins, and trust Christ for that, instead of trusting in my good works (even the works that the NT outlines--even works done in...

    Difficulty Reconciling

I wasn't even aware I was doing that at the time--and I don't really understand how to parse between the different intentions of obeying God "to abide in Christ/retain eternal life" (as it seemingly teaches in John) versus obeying God "to pay for my sins"!
  5. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

See, I was trying to reconcile John with John, but this seems to make sense.
  6. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

Jesus never didn't have life, but it seems He maintained life by obedience, right?
  7. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

Lol some might say so, but STAY ON TOPIC!
  8. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

Well, maybe our heart dispositions are different, bc God said I was trying to repay for my sins by all of my obedience.

    Difficulty Reconciling

Lots will qualify anything the Law says as a work of the Law, and, in a way, they may be right.
  10. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

It's none of your business if I am a handsome brother! Lol
  11. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

Well, the Law commands it, so, yes, from one perspective, it is a work of the Law.
  12. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

Hey, don't you call me ugly!
  13. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

I thought that that was very plainly true, but God told me I was trying to repay Him for my sins by all of my obedience, so I'm trying to not transgress by doing good (as odd as that may sound lol).

    Difficulty Reconciling

So, you would say that persisting in eternal life relies on persisting in faith, which includes doing good by faith?
  15. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

Jesus DID say "God's Command is eternal life, therefore I speak as He commands Me to speak", so speaking/confessing would count as "obedience" leading to eternal life.
  16. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

In principle, or "on paper", I agree, but I was told I was trying to pay God for my sins with my good deeds, so maybe there is something about my intention that is awry, in disagreement with what I think I agree with "on paper".
  17. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

That's how I think. John said many leaders believed, but, bc they loved sin, they wouldn't confess. The thief who believed didn't just believe, but also confessed. This means it's not faith alone right?
  18. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

Your thinking is similar to my own. I live in Flagstaff, just north of you.
  19. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

I kind of agree, but if we rely on our good deeds, isn't that not relying on what He already did for us? You can't lean to the Left and lean to the right at the same time can you?
  20. GracePeace

    Difficulty Reconciling

So, would you say that to abide in Him would be to take His Word in, and arrange yourself accordingly, beginning with accounting ourselves as He says (eg i have peace bc of God's mercy, not my goodness procen by my works, through Jesus), and proceeding to planning to live as He lived/commands us...
