We must not pit John against Jesus. Harmonize them.
Well if we are to harmonize then we must also take into account Jesus teaching on the seed.

John 12:23-25

King James Version

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Add to that all the passages that talk about bringing forth fruit and the answer is, if a person who claims to be born again and produces no fruit, they may not be saved.

Faith cannot be lost. It may be quenched and a believer may know a season of sin but faith if it isd real, cannot be lost, for it is held for us by Jesus.

I agree with much of what you’ve said here.
