Well, you said it yourself, God pronounced the death penalty upon man if he transgressed God's law - such a notion is meaningless to a being with no cognizance of death.

I doubt what you assert is correct.....and do we suppose that the conversations God had with the first pair were limited to what we have recorded in the scriptures? From Sabbath to Sabbath he communed with them and no doubt shared many happy times with them before their disobedience.
