I agree rwb. The bible tells us what happened. There was a serpent....was that serpent actually satan or possessed by satan...who knows.....but there was a real literal entity directly interacting with Eve. Causing doubt, telling half lies...
The bible doesn't present it as some "snake spirit" inside her that manifested in some way.

I believe the serpent is indwelt with a spirit of evil that elsewhere in Scripture is referred to as "the great dragon [was cast out], that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world".

I will jump in here and clarify some misunderstanding about evil and Satan.

The Bible says God creates evil.

Correct! But the word evil can describe more than one thing. It can refer to wickedness and sin, or it can refer to calamity—something harmful, grievous, or bad to those who experience it. Those meanings must not be confused.

For example, God rained fire and brimstone upon Sodom and Gomorrah. That was a terrible judgment for them, but God did no wickedness in bringing it. He acted righteously.

It's really a lot more simple than all that. Apostle John said in 1 John 3:8 that the devil sinned from the beginning, and for this purpose was The Son of God manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

That means the devil actually committed the very first sin.

And I know most here don't believe there was a previous world earth age when Lucifer served God at His Altar and was perfect in his ways like how God originally created him, but that's what God reveals in His parable about the "king of Tyrus" in Ezekiel 28, with God using the flesh king of Tyrus as a type for Lucifer in that old world.

When Lucifer fell because he coveted God's Throne which was his job originally to guard, that was the very first sin, ever. And that is when Lord Jesus was ordained to be born of woman and die on the cross to defeat the death and the devil for us.

Then God brought this present 2nd world earth age starting at Genesis 1:3, and set bounds with man being born in the flesh, and having limited knowledge of that previous world, so as to make a choice who we would follow.

Per what Apostle Paul showed in Romans 8:18-25 about this present 2nd world earth age, God placed this 2nd creation in "bondage of corruption", and it seeks a release from that bondage, just as our spirit does also. That is why this present 2nd world earth age is IMPERFECT. Everything in this present world is in 'vanity', and decays and dies. It is actually the opposite of how God had originally made His 1st creation Perfect. It is this way because of what Lucifer sinned in that old world. And that... is when EVIL and DEATH entered in.

This means that GOD is not... the real author of evil. Even though He said in Isaiah 45:7 (KJV) that He creates evil.

Thus GOD is justified in using EVIL during... this present 2nd world earth age because of what Lucifer did in that old world against Him.

And that is exactly what God shows in chapters like Isaiah 10 using "the Assyrian" as a type for Satan. God is using the devil to work evil during this world upon the rebellious.

I find it interesting that as I was reading the Bible today, I came upon this verse that gives me further confirmation that my understanding that Eve was led astray by the serpent and not lust coming from her own heart until after the serpent had beguiled her. Here Paul links the fall of Eve to the corruption of her mind through the serpent who beguiled her mentally, causing her to doubt God.

2Co 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

The Serpent was cursed to symbolize the unclean spirit of man. Not the created being outside Eve. That's why God told Israel they were forbidden to eat whatsoever goes about upon the belly (Leviticus 11:42) because that represented an unclean animal, signifying unsaved man (Acts 10:14; Acts 10:28; etc.). When we become saved, God has cleansed what was once unclean in the Spirit of Christ. Selah!

Micah 7:16-17
  • "The nations shall see and be confounded at all their might: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall be deaf.
  • They shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of thee."
They lick the dust like a serpent because they have that cursed unclean spirit. Here is the Serpent God cursed in Genesis to go upon its belly that the dust should be its food all the days of thy life. It's unsaved man that is at enmity with the Woman. Likewise God called the Serpent subtil because the mind is a crafty and cunning part of mankind. It is what rationalizes away dishonesty, lawlessness and disobedience. This is why the Serpent in the Garden was called wily or subtil (cunning, crafty). Sin starts in the deep recesses of the mind through the spirit eyes of justification and rationalization. Her own spirit. Not Serpent as outside force or spirit apart from Eve's.

2nd Corinthians 11:3

  • "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, SO your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."
For example, "So," or [houto] "in-this manner" the mind is corrupted. In other words, that's the way it is corrupted. The serpent worked within Eve's mind. It wasn't a angelic being or outside force. It was her own spirit in lust that fells into corruption and leads her (and us) astray (James hapter 1). Moreover see in this passage that the Apostle equates the Serpent beguiling or deceiving Eve to corruption of the mind from simplicity. Same scenario we see again of the corruption beginning in the mind's eye and leading to sin. Consistently we see the same portrait of the working of sin. The carnal lust Eve had came from the corruption in her mind so that mankind lost that virgin purity through their own lust. Not through a fallen angel from heaven. It is her own mind was corrupted by her own lust.

I believe the serpent is indwelt with a spirit of evil that elsewhere in Scripture is referred to as "the great dragon [was cast out], that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world".

RWB, I agree that Revelation 12:9 identifies the dragon as “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan.” Where we differ is in how we understand that figure and his work among men.

Scripture speaks of the devil’s character and influence being expressed through disobedient people. Jesus told His opponents, “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do” (John 8:44). He also called the scribes and Pharisees “serpents” and a “generation of vipers” (Matthew 23:33). Paul describes “the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2). These passages are why I understand the serpent as the spirit of disobedience at work in wicked people, including those who opposed Christ within the congregation of Israel.

Notice the timing in Revelation 12:9–11. When the dragon is cast down, the heavenly voice announces, “Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ.” The brethren overcome him “by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.” To me, that points to Christ’s victory at the cross and the establishment of His kingdom through the testimony of His people. Jesus likewise said, as He approached the cross, “Now shall the prince of this world be cast out” (John 12:31).

This also bears on the change in who represents God’s kingdom. Jesus warned the religious leaders, “The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof” (Matthew 21:43). I understand the dragon’s loss of his place in Revelation 12 in light of that judgment: the wicked leaders and their followers could no longer claim to represent God’s kingdom. Christ’s people would carry His testimony to the nations.

Revelation 20:3 says Satan was bound “that he should deceive the nations no more” until his appointed release. That does not mean wickedness ceased. It means his power to keep the nations in darkness was restrained while the gospel went out and Christ gathered His elect. When that restraint ends, the same spirit of deception will again work openly through wicked people, including within the visible church.

So when I read “dragon,” “serpent,” “Devil,” and “Satan” in this vision, I do not picture a literal dragon or treat his activity as detached from the people through whom deception and accusation operate. Revelation 12:11 directs our attention to the victory that matters: the Lamb’s blood and the faithful testimony of His people.

Here are a few verses from Scripture that say otherwise.

Hebrews 1:7 (KJV) And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

Psalm 104:4 (KJV) Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Luke 24:39 (KJV) Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

Who makes the spirits of humans?

As humans we are physical as well as spiritual.
Angels are also physical....Lot was grabbed by a physical angel...Peter was kicked awake in prison by a physical angel....in heaven the angels planted, harvested and baked the manna.
In Gen 6 physical angels procreated with human women.

More likely there was no actual serpent and it was just satan all along who spoke to Eve face to face. Symbolism was used in the text to hide the literal details. It wasn't until Revelation that ppl were told the serpent was satan. It's no different in Rev 13 where a 7 headed beast is described but it's symbology not a literal 7 headed beast.

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Yeah, I've heard that theory...but I believe Genesis is literal.
Whether or not Satan appeared as a serpent or possessed a serpent I believe is unknown.

The serpent is described as...was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made...this leads me to believe the serpent was literal just as the beast of the fields were literal.

It seems as if the serpent was punished...perhaps for allowing Satan to use him????? and was cursed with....
On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat. Snakes are said to have "pelvic spurs"...vestigial leg....Perhaps that's how they lost them.

As to symbolism...there may be some that ties into the account or has become a description that became associated with Satan as one of the ways to describe him.

Who makes the spirits of humans?

When God created man He formed the body from the dust of the earth (flesh & bone) and breathed into them the breath of life (spirit) and then God calls man a living soul.

Genesis 2:7 (KJV) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Every living, breathing creature upon the earth has a body and spirit and is a living soul. Without breath (spirit) there is no physical life for man or animals. What differentiates animals from humans is that man alone was created in the likeness and image of God at creation endowed with the Spirit of God until man sinned against God and the Spirit departed from man. It was through the Spirit of God in man at creation that gave mankind likeness and image of God and man could live forever through the Spirit of God.

When man sinned, mankind became the same as every breathing creature upon the earth, natural, of the earth without the Spirit to give them life everlasting. Without the breath of God from the Spirit, the spirit in man could give man natural life, no different than it does the animals, but natural spirit is NOT able to give life forever to any living, breathing creature. Without the Spirit of God in man, man's body began to age and would grow old and die, no different than the animals, the natural spirit in man would return to God who gave it. That's why God warned man that in the DAY (age/time) they disobeyed God they would die. Which is why Adam and Eve and all of humanity is destined to physical death from the fall.

John 6:63 (KJV) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

The spirit departs from man when our body of flesh dies, because natural life comes to man through spirit and without the spirit there is no life. For man to possess eternal life after our flesh dies, they must be born again of the Spirit of God before they die. If man physically dies without having been born again, their natural spirit that comes from God will return to God but is said to be in darkness through unbelief. But, when man who has been born again physically dies, their spirit through the Holy Spirit in them returns to God a spiritual body still called a living soul in heaven.

Ec 3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
Ec 3:20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
Ec 3:21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

Ecclesiastes 12:7 (KJV) Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

The spirit giving man physical mortal life to man that has not been born again is no different than the animals after death. Th spirit of man who dies in unbelief is said to be in silence and darkness in the grave, knowing nothing until the great white throne judgment when all of the dead will be called to stand before God to give account of their lives according to what is written in the books and the book of life.

Angels are also physical....Lot was grabbed by a physical angel...Peter was kicked awake in prison by a physical angel....in heaven the angels planted, harvested and baked the manna.

Angels, who are spirits sent from God to minister to heirs of salvation sometimes have appeared in physical form as man. In these passages, angels are described as looking and acting like men, sometimes eating, speaking, and interacting physically, but they remain divine spirits who are messengers from God.

In Gen 6 physical angels procreated with human women.

This is a gross misunderstanding of Gen 6. A mythological legend that has been passed down from days of old but is not truth. Because angels do not marry, nor do they die.

The Bible describes angels as non-physical, spiritual beings created by God. They do not possess human anatomy or DNA, which are necessary for biological reproduction. Angels were created by God, not through procreation, and their purpose is to serve and worship Him rather than to reproduce.

Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Psalm 148:2 (KJV) Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
Psalm 148:5 (KJV) Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.

Hebrews 12:22 (KJV) But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

From the fall, we're told the evil spirit called serpent now works in the children of disobedience. Why would we doubt that he worked in/through the serpent at creation to deceive Eve? Do you believe the evil spirit simply whispered in her ear, causing her to doubt God?

Ephesians 2:2 (KJV) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Do you see no difference in historical writings telling what has already come to pass, and the Revelation characterized by symbolic and visionary language designed to communicate profound spiritual truths rather than literal events?

There's nothing in the Bible to prove there was not a literal tree with literal fruit. I've come to understand that throughout the Old Testament historical writings God uses physical, material things that point to the greater spiritual truths that would be made manifest when Messiah would come.

There was no magic juice in the fruit...the fruit was 100% real.
The sin was in eating the literal fruit...being disobedient to God. The motives behind eating the fruit.
Does that sound like a just thing to do to an innocent animal?
Who knows???? Was it just for God to kill another innocent animal and make garments for Adam and Eve?

And do snakes eat dust or could that be symbolic language?
Perhaps....but snakes flick their tongues tasting the dust in the air.
Symbolic in a way similar to a race car driver telling another you'll be eating my dust when I cross the finish line ahead of you.

Yup.

Does a squirrel or a worm have a spirit?

Is a newborn baby endowed with the Spirit of God or a spirit God has made and given to that newborn baby?

No, animals don't have spirits.
Angels, who are spirits sent from God to minister to heirs of salvation sometimes have appeared in physical form as man. In these passages, angels are described as looking and acting like men, sometimes eating, speaking, and interacting physically, but they remain divine spirits who are messengers from God.
Yes, angels are physical. Their bodies are not like ours as they are of a different dimension. Live in a different dimension.
This is a gross misunderstanding of Gen 6. A mythological legend that has been passed down from days of old but is not truth. Because angels do not marry, nor do they die.
Angels....actually the term angels refer to a job title...messenger. Not all angels are messengers. But, as humans we call them angels. There are many types of heavenly host that we lump together and call "angels".

"Angels" don't marry in heaven. Peters tells us they left their original domain...estate...and married women on earth...where they did and do marry women and produce offspring.
genesis 6 speaks of this briefly. The offspring were nephilim giants. Do you know their purpose?
Do you know their purpose after the flood when it happened again?
The Bible describes angels as non-physical, spiritual beings created by God. They do not possess human anatomy or DNA, which are necessary for biological reproduction. Angels were created by God, not through procreation, and their purpose is to serve and worship Him rather than to reproduce.
Have you ever captured an angel and tested them for DNA?

Some of the angels...200 watcher angels came to earth and procreated with human women. Twice.
They were punished and locked up for doing this act.
Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Does a squirrel or a worm have a spirit?

If there is not spirit there is not life. Hear the words of Christ through John telling us the spirit gives life [quickeneth] but the flesh profits nothing. Life in every living, breathing creature on the earth comes from spirit. Even sea creatures must breathe to live. Sea creatures “breathe” in the sense that they exchange gases — taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide — but the mechanism varies from gills to skin to lungs depending on the species and its environment. Yes, even worms breathe through their skin, this process is called 'cutaneous respiration'. The worms rely on moisture to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

John 6:63 (KJV) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Is a newborn baby endowed with the Spirit of God or a spirit God has made and given to that newborn baby?

No! A baby, like all of humanity are mortal and destined to mortal death. Babies are physically born with body of flesh, alive through spirit and called living souls. The Spirit of God, with the exception of Christ and John-the-Baptist is naturally born in mortal flesh in the likeness and image of their natural father just as Seth was born in the likeness and image of Adam. This is why all man desiring to have everlasting or eternal life must be born again through the Spirit sent from Christ.

Ge 5:1 ¶ This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;
Ge 5:2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
Ge 5:3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

You will no doubt wonder how can a baby or a mentally impaired person be born again? The answer written through Paul is simply that God has mercy and compassion upon whom He chooses.

Romans 9:8 (KJV) That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Ro 9:15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Ro 9:16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

When mankind sins their spirit dies. When a man finds Jesus that spirit is made alive and they are ALSO given the Holy Spirit.

The spirit did not die in A&E when they sinned. They eventually physically died because the life-giving Spirit from God departed from them, and the LORD sent an evil spirit [serpent] to torment them. We find truth of this through King Saul.

1 Samuel 16:14 (KJV) But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

When a man turns to Christ in faith, they have physical life through natural spirit, but since the natural spirit in them is not from Christ, and destined to die, man is born again, not naturally or physically, but supernaturally through the Spirit of Christ. This is why Christ tells us "Ye must be born again", saying "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

What denomination of christianity teaches this? Is this your own conception?

There are a few verses showing physical death for believers is not the end for us. Because when we breathe our last as born again believers, we are then present with the Lord in heaven. That's why Christ tells the repentant thief on the cross that he would be with Christ in paradise that very day. Even David understood that when Messiah came he would not be left in the realm of the dead. Paul also speaks of this, longing to be absent from his mortal body of flesh that he might be with the Lord in heaven, leaving his body that he as spiritual body would be living soul in heaven.

2 Corinthians 5:1 (KJV) For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

2Co 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
2Co 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
2Co 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Luke 23:43 (KJV) And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Acts 2:27 (KJV)
Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Php 1:23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
Php 1:24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

1Co 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1Co 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

1 Corinthians 15:20 (KJV) But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

1 Corinthians 15:35 (KJV)
But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
1 Corinthians 15:36 (KJV)
Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
1Co 15:37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:
1Co 15:38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

1 Corinthians 15:44 (KJV) It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

1Co 15:45
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
1Co 15:46
Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
1Co 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
1Co 15:48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
1Co 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
1Co 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

These verses together show that, according to the Bible, when a believer’s body departs, their soul is taken to be with the Lord—either “in paradise” , “at home with the Lord”, or in the presence of God in the new creation. From natural body of flesh to spiritual body a living soul in heaven. This is the biblical basis for the belief that believers leave their bodies and go to heaven.

The spirit returns to God and is judged. You said man is no different than an animal....will all the animals be judged?
No, animals don't have spirits.

There is no Scripture telling us the natural spirit in us is judged when we die??? Mankind is judged because they are without excuse because God has given revelation through the things He has created, and that He will punish the wicked for their sins.

Isaiah 13:11 (KJV) And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

I did not say man was no different than animals. I said IN DEATH unbelievers, like animals at death are said to be in silence and darkness in the grave. And that the spirit of ALL mankind returns to God, but not the spirit of animals. The spirit of man returns to God who gave it because the spirit will return with Christ to give life to every human that has physically died in mortal flesh. God shall resurrect the DEAD in the grave to life again to be judged in mortal body according to what is written in the books and the book of life. (see 1Th 4:14; Jo 5:28-29)

If animals don't have the breath of life [spirit], how are they physically alive? Remember it is the spirit that gives life to mortal flesh, the flesh profits nothing. Animals as well as man is made of flesh + breath of life [spirit] and called a living soul until they breathe their last.

Genesis 1:30 (KJV) And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, [living breathing creature] I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

Job 12:10 (KJV) In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

Ecclesiastes 3:19 (KJV) For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

“Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind…”
The term living creature is nephesh chayah — the same phrase used for “living soul.”

Ge 7:15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

Genesis 6:17 (KJV)
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

It's clear you ignored every verse I gave you to prove angels are not physical but spiritual beings, that occasionally take on human form.
