Yes, the tent that Moses had made was a literal tent. --
If I told you that I go into my closet and talk to God, would you think that God dwells in my closet?
How about if I told you that in my closet He talks to me face to face? What about the person who talks to God in their bed, while they are sleeping? Could that be considered 'in the clouds' or 'on the mountain top' -- if that is how they perceive Him in dreams? -in spirit?
EVERYTHING Moses made was an abomination to God, who specifically instructed him NOT to make a copy of anything seen in spirit. That's scripture. And after him, David-- he was told- "You will not be the one to build my house."
But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build a house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood. Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel: And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
There is more to the story. Just like that tent of meeting, there are two kinds-- one a physical place, one a spiritual reality that is greater and different than a literal, physical image. -The spiritual things can't be copied. Shouldn't be copied-- because any replica, no matter how exact is not the representation of that spiritual reality. A tent seen in spirit is NOT a physical tent. You can make a physical tent, but that isn't where God meets you. YOU are the tent He comes into to speak with you.
So too, the temple. The house that David planned and Solomon built are NOT the house of God that they supposed it to be. As grand as Solomon's temple was-- it was just that... Solomon's temple. It was not the house of God. Did God really choose Solomon to build Him a house? No. David chose Solomon to succeed him as King and that was the dynastic house of David.
