Hello there,

Anointing
(Gr. 'Chrisma') = derived from 'Chrio', and allied with the word ‘Christ,’ meaning:- ‘The Anointed’, ‘The Messiah’. The word Messiah is from the Hebrew (Daniel 9:25-26). The word ‘mashiach’ means ‘anointed’ (Leviticus 4:3).

* When the word ‘anointing’ is applied to the believer in Scripture, it’s presence or absence indicates the character of the dispensation in view. This is how the word is used in the New Testament:-

'Chrio':-
Luke 4:18 - ‘He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel.’
The Acts of the Apostles 4:27 - ‘Thy holy child Jesus, Whom Thou hast anointed.
The Acts of the Apostles 10:38 - ‘God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost.
2 Corinthians 1:21 - ‘And hath anointed us, is God.’
Hebrews 1:9 – ‘Hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness.’

'Chrisma':-
1 John 2:20 – 'Ye have an unction from the Holy One.'
1 John 2:27 – 'The anointing which ye have received.'
1 John 2:27 – 'As the same anointing teacheth you.'

(4 references speak of the anointing of the Saviour and 4 of the anointing of the believer)

* Taking the verses from 1 John (above), I ask the questions:-

- Is it universally true that every believer at all times has this ‘anointing’?
- Does it refer to the experience of every believer, or is there something special about it?

* The answer can be determined by considering the consequence of this anointing. Among other things it rendered the possessor independent of ‘teaching, for he ‘knew all things’.
* Another way of arriving at the truth is to look at the subject matter of 1 John as a whole, and find out the scope of the passage:-

A. ‘That eternal life:’ - A Person. The Son. (1:1 to 2:17)
.. B. ‘Many Antichrists:’ - ‘Ye have an unction.’ (2:18-29)
.... C. ‘What manner of love’. (3:1-24)
.. B. Spirit of Antichrist:’ – ‘Try the spirits’. (4:1-6)
.... C. 'Herein is love'. (4:7-21)
A. ‘The true God and eternal life’: - A Person. The Son.(5:1-21)

* Making this comparison (A with A etc.,) It can be seen that we are dealing with a particular experience, not one that is general and universally true of all believers. The spirit and the teaching of Antichrist was to be met by the supernatural gift bestowed upon the Church during the Acts period, as indicated in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10.

* These were all 'spiritual gifts' (1 Corinthians 12:1) and peculiar to the dispensation inaugurated at Pentecost. This fulfils the promise of Mark 16:17-20, a promise abundantly fulfilled during the period of the Acts and the 'unction' especially referred to by John is the gift of 'the discerning of spirits': which is the outcome of the warning given in the previous verses.

* Yes, 1 John 2:20 (above) is the outcome of the warning given in the previous verses 'it is the last time', 'Antichrist shall come', 'they were not all of us'. 'but ye have an unction' ... 'ye know'.

* Again as a preface to the next reference to this anointing John says: 'These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But this anointing which ye have received ... ye need not that any man teach you.

*
In the sequel, namely in 1 John 4:1-6, instead of speaking of the anointing, John speaks of its practical outworking:- 'Try the spirits ... this is that spirit of Antichrist'.

* Paul has reference to this too, which I hope to look at later (God willing).

The patterns of scripture are truly wonderful. Scripture supports scripture and the study of it leads to greater understanding. I have only looked at the first two verses Luke 4:18 and Acts 4:27 so far.

In Luke 4:18-21 Jesus, speaking in the Temple on the Sabbath said, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began to say unto them, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears."

When Jesus said, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing,” He was saying in the clearest possible manner that He was the anointed Messiah of Israel.

His mission was to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord—the dawning of a new era. He preached to the poor of spirit, He healed the broken-hearted, He proclaimed liberty to the captives of Satan, and he opened the eyes of the spiritually blind. Christ is the answer to all the world's ills whether physical or spiritual.

Turning to Acts 4:27-28 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done in opposing Jesus. The whole world it seems, except for a few, was against Jesus.

The above reminds us of the first three verses of Psalm 2.
Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. They opposed the anointed one.

Since the time of Babel, people have continually banded together in opposition against the Lord and against His anointed one Jesus Christ. Since Jesus is the perfect representation of the Father (John 10:30; John 14:9) then if people oppose God the Father, they oppose Jesus and if they oppose Jesus, they oppose God the Father.

I despair when I read people denying Jesus, for when they do that, they deny God himself. They are Satan's minions.

These are the first two verses charity posted, and short as it is, I may have to leave it here. Thank you for reading.

As you have pointed out Chris, there are many anointings, really in our time period it is almost always applied to born again Christians who have been baptized by holy spirit.

'Now He which stablisheth us with you in Christ,
and hath anointed us, is God,
Who hath also sealed us,
and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.'

(2 Cor. 1:21-22)

Hello again,

There is only one reference to 'anointing' in Paul's epistles which relate to the believer, and that is the one quoted above. and again the larger context must be considered first. I Corinthians 12, and the all-covering words, 'concerning spiritual gifts', would be as true in 2 Corinthians as they are in the first epistle. The same Church, people and dispensation belong to both. In 1 Corinthians 1:6-8 it says:-

'That in every thing ye are enriched by Him,
in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
So that ye come behind in no gift;
waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Who shall also confirm you unto the end,
that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of His Son
Jesus Christ our Lord.'

* This confirmation is particularly associated with 'gifts', 'signs and wonders' (Heb. 2:3-4) and the same word that is used in 1 Corinthians 1:6 and 8, namely, 'bebaioo', is used in 2 Corinthians 1:21 where it is translated 'stablisheth' (see above):

* In Ephesians 1:13-14, 'the seal' and 'the earnest' is found, but the external confirmation and anointing is omitted.

* During the Acts period confirmation of truth was miraculous, but with the passing of Israel and the opening of the dispensation of the Mystery, miraculous gifts, signs wonders, tongues and all the other 'manifestations of the Spirit' ceased. The presence or absence of 'anointing' in the epistles is a dispensational indicator. (Ref: 'An Alphabetical Analysis' vol 1)

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris
