Unfortunately, there is an alarming decline in proper Bible teaching in the life of the modern Christian. I recently had to gently remind a brother who was twice my age of the true meaning of a passage that he was taking completely out of context and using incorrectly, I won't go into detail but it was not a passage that was easily misinterperated if one has read the Bible.
The best I can tell you is to make sure that you know your Bible. It is the only defense against the pull of evil, as illustrated by Jesus's reply to the enemy when tempted on the mountain during his fast. He replied with "It is written..." and then used the word of God to silence the devil's persuasions.
Not only is the modern day Christian to blame for not taking the initiative to read and understand the Word, but also the leadership. The Bible is simply not being taught in some congregations. I heard of a ministry that had a youth Bible study that consisted of playing board games and listening to Christian music.
But, I digress, make sure that you know your Bible, and try to encourage others around you to do the same. Gentle rebuke in the face of abuse or misuse of the Word is really all you can do. Not that I have a huge knowledge of the Word, but even in my infantile state of spirituality I notice many brothers and sisters who simply do not read their Bibles.
