Cringe-worthy is the best face I can put on it! I knew of no American man that would claim that it was attractive. All the soldiers I knew dated the shaven women.Did you find the ones who did not shave any less attractive, or manly?

All styles of dress (including LDS Christian missionaries) are determined by social norms and the message a person wants to convey via those norms.Yet, look back at the 40's and 50's, where what was the ideal "clean-cut Christian man" had dark suit, tie, white shirt, clean shaven and a short haircut. The Mormons demand their missionaries dress and appear as the "perfect image" of a holy Christian. In the Old Testament is was a shame for a man to have a short haircut and a trimmed or shaven beard. Such a "clean-cut man" would never be seen as a "holy man."
Cultures change. Some rigid denominations that exist today has women with their uncut hair in a bun, no makeup, and no jewelry, and long loose dresses. They are stuck in time, when such a look was the "standard" for "holy Christian women. " These denominations believe that when people look at you, they will say, "There's a Christian!" They are fooling themselves in that most people I know look at them as a contest to see who can be the "homeliest for the Lord!"
Remember when almost every preacher wore a "collar"? Do you know where the tradition came from?
At one time collars were the cat's meow! It was the style of the day! But, when they fell out of favor and styles changed, not everybody was wealthy enough to get an upgrade to stay current! Preachers were notoriously underpaid and under supported. When they fell so far behind everyone else, people would point to them and say, "Look, a preacher"! The style eventually became a "style" to identify themselves as "Clergy."
I see dress as a means of modesty, and to make one self attractive and normal to society. I no longer wear bell-bottoms and psychedelic silk shirts and I no longer have long hair.
this might be better contemplated in light of the significance of hair in Scripture, and maybe not read quite so literally as a Jew would, since literal hair and beards is surely not what is really being discussed anyway. Similarly, storing milk and meat on diff shelves in the fridge is also a sign that Scripture is not being understood imoWell there seems to be a great fuss about tattoos, but what about beards? The verse before the one about tattoos in Leviticus says
Leviticus 19:27
“Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards."
So why are tattoos unacceptable to many, but beard trimming, shaving is acceptable?
I myself trim my beard and shave it off once in a while.
In my view these were both Old Testament Jewish laws that weren't passed on into the NT.
ha german girls are not eastern girls, thats for sureCringe-worthy is the best face I can put on it! I knew of no American man that would claim that it was attractive. All the soldiers I knew dated the shaven women.
It is not normal to go around looking like a parade of funeral directors! All styles of dress (including LDS Christian missionaries) are determined by social norms and the message a person wants to convey via those norms.
Thanks for this! My memory is really bad these days so I really did not recall what you may have said in the past. I often do not recognize sarcasm so again it is my failing.I was being sarcastic Amadeus - because of some of the comments that were made !
It’s okay, I know your views. Rita
It’s my English humour and banter amedeus - it wasn’t totally obvious that I was being sarcastic. Thanks for this! My memory is really bad these days so I really did not recall what you may have said in the past. I often do not recognize sarcasm so again it is my failing.
For the benefit others reading, my step father and two of my closest uncles had tatoos visible most of the time from where they had been in earlier years. They regretted having them and I loved them all for who they were in spite of the marks on their bodies.
Give God the glory!
So if a person gets a tattoo of a cross or Jesus on them that is not fruitful spiritually? Those tattoos would give an “appearance of evil”?You really wish to labor this point?
This verse would cover tattoos and ALL works of darkness: And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. (Eph 5:11)
"And such an exhortation to the duty of plain abstinence from things that the opinion of the world around us has no objection to, but which are contrary to the light, is addressed to all Christian people." -- Alexander McLaren.
Tattooing is not fruitful spiritually since tattoos are clearly identified with gangsters and criminals -- workers of darkness. They have the appearance of evil, and we are to avoid the very appearance of evil.
Abstain from all appearance of evil. (1 Thess 5:22)
Criminals could get such a tattoo simply to throw everyone off the truth. You've probably seen some people wearing crosses just for show.So if a person gets a tattoo of a cross or Jesus on them that is not fruitful spiritually? Those tattoos would give an “appearance of evil”?
My general impression of you has been a favorable one. After a while I get such an impression of a person even when I know that I disagree with him/her on some details. Of course I were to really get down on every person with whom I ever disagreed on anything, I would likely find myself very much alone. The flesh often cannot handle it. So the answer of course is to get in the Spirit and stay there. Do we all do that? It’s my English humour and banter amedeus - it wasn’t totally obvious that I was being sarcastic.

I have always had utmost respect for you amadeus, so I can take our differences without it becoming an issue between us xxMy general impression of you has been a favorable one. Thank you Rita! I really do appreciate you and your response here.I have always had utmost respect for you amadeus, so I can take our differences without it becoming an issue between us xx
Thanks Amadeus, I am not sure if I am going to stay for much longer, but I appreciate your kind words. I can have fellowship with a few on here, but others just convey pharisaic attitudes that prevent any kind of beneficial interaction. Also with your elections coming up I am not sure I can take all the continuous reference to your politics in the US -it’s only going to get worse as November approaches !!! LolThank you Rita! I really do appreciate you and your response here.
Just think of the place it puts those of us who live in the US! God won't let me quit here yet, but I purposely do not read most of the threads dedicated to politics... I guess I know where I stand on the politics in my country [I guess indeed?], but some of the people posting, calling themselves Christians, don't seem to know God at all. I am also now avoiding most the threads dedicated to Covid-19 as I have neither the expertise nor the patience to wade through the theories and the mess. Just keep remembering the two great commandments according to Jesus. Some people who know the words [memorized?] don't seem to have clue when it comes to even trying to immerse themselves in them...Thanks Amadeus, I am not sure if I am going to stay for much longer, but I appreciate your kind words. @Rita Well, up here we are in Canada... A lot of the posters on the site are in Australia (or NZ...)Thanks Amadeus, I am not sure if I am going to stay for much longer, but I appreciate your kind words. @Candidus Maybe partly because Fidel Castro was also more or less the official enemy in the US, his beard was also regarded by a lot of Fundamentalists as a no-no to emulate. And of course in the 50s women were much less likely to have tattoos; I read of a Hollywood producer who wanted to re-create a 1950s beach scene, but couldn't find enough young women without tattoos; but I saw a quote from the Bible Belt which shows just how widespread they are now.Yet, look back at the 40's and 50's, where what was the ideal "clean-cut Christian man" had dark suit, tie, white shirt, clean shaven and a short haircut.
