In recent years, numerous reports of black military helicopters have been reported to civilian authorities. These helicopters have frightened and intimidated private citizens by buzzing their homes - flying at extremely low altitude sometimes less than 300 feet above the rooftops.

These incidents are illegal, according to FAA regulations. When local police investigate the incidents the typical answer they get is that military reserve units are conducting 'training exercises'. What kind of training?

Enter conspiracy theories that suggest the Federal government is preparing to issue martial law across the entire country. Except for Ferguson, of course. Local police and the National Guard got involved and local authorities declared martial law, but there were no black helicopters seen anywhere. If the vehicles were going to show up, why didn't they become visible in Ferguson, NYC, Chicago or at the L.A. riots and demonstrations? Is it possible their mission is something else?

I live in a clean secure middle class neighborhood. Nothing more violent than a Sunday afternoon BBQ ever happens here, yet I have personally witnessed an incident of black helicopter buzzing our neighborhood at treetop level. Our local sheriff gave the usual 'training exercise' justification. Obviously there is no anti-government activity in our neighborhood. Is something else going on?

The only reason, other than a training exercise, for conducting a low level sweep of an urban neighborhood is to conduct surveillance. There are two types of equipment that might be used for this at night. One is an infra red detector, which has been proven effective at much higher altitudes. The other is a radiation detector.

Since the early 1970's, the technology for ultra high speed radiation detection has been available. With the recent inclusion of advanced electronic displays and counters, such as diodes and scillintator materials, the digital sampling time has been reduced to nanoseconds. It is now technically possible to mount ultra high speed radiation detectors aboard a large helicopter for the purpose of scanning a large area at relatively high speed.

The question is - why would the military want to scan urban neighborhoods for radioactive materials. Are we guilty of watching too much TV or is something else going on? Is something else being searched for?

Thoughts and comments are invited....

What's fascinating is that paranoia on both sides is to blame.

They watch is in fear, we watch them in fear both gripping their guns.

Worst of all is how many of those fearful are Christian and still gripping their carnal weapons.

I actually live near one of the training areas. I get helicopters all the time around here. Flying very low no less. I also live near an air-force base. So I get a pretty wide variety of aircraft, but a lot of helicopters. I'm not paranoid a bit. Even if I had ominous black helicopters, I wouldn't care. I would really like to know what they find so interesting about me because I think I'm actually pretty boring. What ever tickles their fancy I guess. I've got nothing to hide. Maybe they just want us to tell them about Jesus!!! I'm cool with that! :p

Or they could simply be doing simulated training in an urban environment which is the most likely answer. The military has done a notable shift in the past decade or so after they realized the 21st century would involve smaller conflicts often in urban environments. They cannot all be trained at the sim center at Ft. Knox, so they'll train in "live" environments where the terrain is different.

Around here, we've seen a ton of Apache helicopters doing low flights and jumps from the local airport. I've had both Apache and F-16s run parallel to my vehicle while riding down the road in multiple locations where they obviously were using civilian traffic as maybe targets to paint in sim or even just learning surveillance and avoidance.

Who knows? There doesn't have to be a demon behind every bush.

Training in an urben environment is not a valid reason for these actions. It's dangerous and its a violation of FAA regulations to fly at tree top level over populated areas.

I spoke to a pilot of a police helicopter recently. He said that they fly according to strict rules. Most of these rules were created to lessen the effect of mechanical failure in the aircraft. For example, I was told that police pilots are not allowed to hover if at all possible. Should the engine fail during a hover, the helicopter would fall uncontrollably to the ground. On the other hand, if there is forward movement they can auto-rotate to a safe landing. They are also supposed to fly over streets wherever possible, NOT houses or businesses. It simply isn't safe.

One thing is certain, the military is flying these helicopters at low levels in violation of FAA regulations and of consideration for the safety of citizens. It is simply wrong.

Unfortunately, the American people are so gullible and so fanatic in their support of the military that they will support any violation of law abroad or at home.(*) When one of these things crashes - and crash they will - what will the reaction be? Will there be a public outrage at the low level buzzing or will there be silence? It's my guess few will say or do anything. The military will thus continue to violate our privacy and now our homes as well.

BTW - since my first post there have been repeated overflights of our neighborhood by these things, not just one. For those who don't worry about it I simply say that ignorance is not bliss. It is hoping that tragedy will visit someone else - a truly Christian attitude.

and that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...

(*) Some suggest that these actions are being conducted to intimidate the population. I disagree. Why would the military choose to intimidate a population that is wholly and completely in support of any criminal or unsafe action they undertake? The answer is that they wouldn't because there is no reason to force our population to cower.

There is another reason. It's not intimidation and it's not training. It's something else for sure.
