Do you believe that Revelation was written for the people in John's time or for our generation?
I believe it was given to the people in John's time, but was written for and about us. That may seem like a mysterious answer, but it isn't really. Obviously the first part is true. John wrote it and it was circulated. But it was written for us and about us because (I believe) we are at the end point (meaning the battle is about to begin and the 1000 year reign is around the corner).
That being said, I imagine folks in history thought the same thing. The rise of Islam, the year 1000 AD, the black plague era... WWI and WWII (especially with the nuclear age coming). Well, they were right to believe so based on their information. Same with us. If this isn't the last generation we will join them that were rightfully preparing.
So it was written for our generation because we are at the end. And if not, the next generation better take it just as seriously.
As for my thoughts on the book itself: some have said it is full of symbolism and others say it should be taken literally. I personally believe it is full of symbolism (as is the rest of the Bible) but a lot of the symbolism is indeed explained in the book.
There is a lot of debate about it and theories on what means what (we have seen that in this thread). Were the 7 Churches merely 7 churches found in Asia (Turkey) at the time, or do they represent 7 ages? Who is the woman in chapter 12: is it Sarah, is it Mary or is it the Church (bride of Christ)? Who are the 7 thunders in chapter 10? And what did they say? Or were the literally thunder (which are just sound caused by lightening) that had another voice (thus a sound making another sound.... I have a hard time taking that literally!)
The book is fascinating, some say its simple others say its complicated. I have no problem saying its controversial. Until these things happen, Christians as a whole may never agree on everything.
