My doctor ordered a blood sugar test kit for me and I picked it up this morning. As I suspected after eating a potato it dropped from 112 to 83 which isn't much but I also wasn't shaky this time. I'll test it after eating something sugary and see how low it's been dropping.

It could take a number of hours before a potato is digested, whereas something like fruit juice will start to show up in blood glucose within 15 minutes.

I was going to try a fruit pie, but I couldn't get a blood sample this morning so I'll have to do it later on in the week. But fruit pies make me shaky so I'll try that.

After eating apple or strawberry pie, especially with ice cream, my glucose readings shoot up to 325 (18.0) in about an hour! It is certainly not going to lower your glucose levels.

The doctor is suspecting that it rises and then drops. So it's not really brittle diabetes but it is an affect of my CF.

Don't play around with diabetes.
Elevated blood sugar can kill you slowly, but extreme highs and lows can kill you today.
Medical science are amateurs when it comes to diabetes. They don't know really how it works or how many different types of diabetes there are.
Even within a type each person experiences it differently.
Dietitians are mostly useless except to tell you sugar can raise your level. Fluids are in fact your friend.

Now all this may sound a little weird....fear factors are too entertaining for them and professionals are not going to admit what they do not know, so they are going to wing it. So assume nothing and expect them to be guessing.

A lot of people here are older and there are some common sense processes that need to occur.
1. Get a full blood test and a copy of it.
2. Start your own health folder.
3. Start a personal log....date...time....sugar level....medication taken....blood pressure....what you ate. Keep it up to date and look for patterns. This means you are tracking sugar highs and lows and what you ate and the medication you took at what time.
Dietitians will tell you what they think will affect you....it is time to find out what really affects you. It may not even be sugar, you can be having a reaction to something you are eating or drinking. What affect you....look for that. For example I can eat ice cream but I have to reduce my intake of bread and potatoes...is it starch that affects you most.....it should reflect in your log.
4. If sugar swings keep occurring get a FreeStyle Libre monitor so you can spot check your levels through the day and night. And log it.
5. If your taking diabetic medications and you go high, bring it down slow, do not try to bring it down with one dose.
6. Exercise....walks whatever.
7. Regular bowl movements....retaining can raise sugar levels.
8. If you are over weight you have to get to a normal level....exercise and a common sense diet.....and Ozempic can help.
9. Take your log in with you for regular doctor visits. If you have a good doctor, great. If he seems weird, he is weird. Judge a book by its cover. Find a doctor that you can be confident in.

You have to take responsibility for your own health. The medical system is setup to let the insurance companies tell your doctor how to treat you and with what....your health is an expense to them....look into it yourself.

Thanks for the advice. I now have a blood test kit. My dietician is a good one and explained a lot of helpful tips for me. The only thing that makes my sugar drop is lots of rice without meat, or potatoes without sour cream and cheese. Also sugary foods make it drop after a few hours. But I don't have diabetes, I have CF related blood sugar problems so the specialist I have is aware of that and advised me specific to my disease.

Yes I understand that. Thanks. But I was fine until I added the recent potatoes to my diet.
Sounds like kideny function devin . For whatever reason . If you are drinking and not weeing
that sure can be a sign of kidney trouble . Course one has to ask how much SALT are you putting in your diet .
How much processed foods are you eating .

Still a log would be a good idea.

Brittle diabetes is a term that is sometimes used to describe hard-to-control diabetes (also called labile diabetes). It is characterized by wide variations or “swings” in blood glucose (sugar) in which blood glucose levels can quickly move from too high (hyperglycemia) to too low (hypoglycemia).

So you do not have Brittle diabetes?

No I have reactive hypoglycemia: Reactive hypoglycemia: What causes it?

In people who don't have diabetes, the cause of reactive hypoglycemia often isn't clear. But symptoms may be connected to what and when a person eats. This is from the Mayo Clinic....LOL....See what I mean....they are like the weathermen that cannot forecast the weather....is the rock wet? LOL

It does not matter if it is type I or type II diabetes or sugar related issues..... if you look at the pancreas it usually looks normal. The medical definition of diabetes.... Diabetes occurs when glucose builds up in the blood due to the pancreas not producing enough insulin but actually sugar issues involve too little or too much insulin Should they look at other causes if the pancreas looks normal.

I believe in a lot of cases it is a communication issue between the digestive system and the pancreas. But medical system and big pharma would lose billions of dollars if they found a cure.

I think I have figured out what causes the reactive hypoglycemia in me. I quit eating candy bars for Lent and I never really picked it back up. Since that time I have only had mild feelings of low blood sugar. So it's definitely sugar that causes my problems I suspect.

Keeping track of what you are eating can help.
The dietitians told me that baked or boiled chicken or fish was best......for me it does matter how I cook chicken or fish it raises my sugar levels.

Lean roast beef or steak, or pork or turkey is good for me.

Pay attention to the weather...LOL...the change of barometric pressure has an effect on me....runs high for no other apparent reason.

Strangely enough it is good to know what raises your sugar levels quickly in case you bottom out and need to raise it.....keep it handy.

Good luck.

I noticed I get a slight about shaky from the potatoes, so next month I think I'm going to switch from potatoes to eggs on toast.

I got shaky today after eating top ramen and a cheese sandwhich, about 4 hours later my blood sugar was 61 so it dropped considerably.

So the question I have for you guys is what is too low on my blood sugar and when should I be worried?

I read that low is 70-55 and super low is below 55. Below 55 requires an injection. And with mine I can just eat something, which I did. I feel better now.

Thanks!

My diabetic friend's endocrinologist wants her to keep it around 125. She gets feeling really weird below 85. Down in the numbers you're talking about...

Yeah that's what I noticed. The other day I thought it was low so I took a reading and it was 82 which is normal so I was confused. And then today I got shaky and feeling a lot worse so I decided to quickly check it and wow 61. I put a note to my doctor to discuss. So maybe they'll have some input on it.
