Pope Francis, who since the beginning of his pontificate has taken a more tolerant tone toward homosexuality, appeared to break with the position of the Roman Catholic Church by supporting civil unions for same-sex couples, according to remarks Francis made in a new documentary that debuted in Rome on Wednesday.

He shows the he is not connected to the Head who is Christ. What does a Catholic do when they see the leader they hold up to be supreme and never wrong is wrong? I'm guessing it doesn't damage their faith in him. They continue on in their belief that the Pope is always right and infallible.

I realize I could be denounced for saying this, but I'm going to say it anyway. I don't know what to say about the Pope's endorsement of same-sex civil unions in regards to Catholic teaching or the impact it will have on the Catholic Church, but I agree with his compassionate sentiment toward homosexuals. I believe homosexuality is a sexual sin, but so is adultery, lust, and fornication. As I've said, I believe everyone (regardless of their sins, race, age, gender, religion) should be protected under federal and state laws. I don't believe heterosexuals who also commit sexual sins (adultery, fornication) should be denied protection under federal and state laws, so I don't oppose homosexuals receiving the same protection under these laws. I agree with his sentiment because I treat homosexuals with kindness, as I would like for them to treat me. I believe in loving my neighbor as myself and treating others the way I want to be treated. I believe the Golden Rules applies to everyone, no matter who they are.

I've sinned against God myself and I don't want to be denied civil rights and equality based on my sins against God. I certainly value my freedom as an American citizen. I believe other American citizens should be afforded the same civil rights and equality as I value as an American citizen.

You seem to have a misunderstanding of what Catholics believe... They don't believe that the Pope is always right and infallible...
Papal infallibility only applies to the introduction of new doctrines... It doesn't apply to everything the Pope says

Is this view of same sex unions a private opinion of the Pope? How official is this pronouncement?

If those Catholics who disagree with the Pope's statement, calling him a heretic and saying he should not be believed or followed in this, doesn't this make these dissenters in effect Protestants?

It would seem that they are protesting the Pope's teaching authority in a manner that reflects the early years of the Reformation when the ex-Catholics were leaving that magisterial authority and moving into something new. Many of these supposed conservative Catholics are actually Protestants of the Old Catholic sect variety. They seem to have the patina of Catholicism but have left it for a Mary-centered liturgical religious cult.

The church really should limit this to the church. You can not be a practicing homosexual and be a part of a Christian church. You can have temptations—just like a repentant drunk who still longs to get drunk—but you can not be an unrepentant sinner in the church. 1 Corinthians 5 tells us to not allow that person to fellowship with the church. That's true of any unrepentant person who calls themselves a brother but who is living in the sin that being a Christian demands they turn away from.

That is not policy change, that is his opinion and we have threads about this already here. The Official Catholic position is till that homosexuality is disordered.

Why is it, historyb, if I understand it correctly, that such folks as Taylor Marshall, Archbishop Vigano, Timothy Gordon, the websites Church Militant and The Remnant are calling the Pope a heretic and an anti-pope because of this matter and that the chair of St. Peter is now vacant? Didn't the Protestants before them call the Pope a heretic?

Why can't Catholic church doctrine change in this matter? It seems to have changed in other matters. ????

I wouldn't try to defend a church whose supreme leader is saying it's okay to be gay. Sometimes you just got to accept that your church isn't any good.

Just the fact he's saying being gay is okay for the church is enough to leave that church in the rear view mirror.

Looking at his opinion and leaving the Church because of him I would have to contemplate, at the same time Pope Francis is not the Church he is just temporary until hopefully a better Pontiff takes over. There have been worse Popes them him and there will be worse them him. This Pope reminds me of the guy in JRR Tolkien's book who was regent when the king was gone, the regent was pretty bad but the majority of people stayed and fought against the evil tide and like me some left. I am in no position to tell one what to do but agree that the Popes comments are very troubling and this Pope doesn't seem to care

(I am not surprised considering the sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church, the whole issue has been a mess for ages).

Yes and that is the problem, not enough Catholics know the catechism nor taught properly and to them it becomes a scandal. There were prayers and a rally for clarification from him by many faithful because it has been reported that he was misquoted but true to form he has not, nor I fear will he.
