Maybe it's a reaction against all the media hype.
I do agree that the media is really running with the story, but they also have a responsibility to keep the public informed. Given the information I posted to you, there's clearly a need for it. Lives are at stake.

Sorry, I didn't appreciate you being in Aussie Land. :) Here in the US we're in the midst of a public debate about "socialized medicine", where one side (Republicans) want to keep health care a corporate enterprise run primarily for profit, and the other side (Democrats) want health care to be for the public good.

Right now the Republicans label just about anything funded by tax dollars as "socialism" (except the programs they like), thus my snide remark.
Government health care sucks. Anything the government gets thier hands in becomes infinitely more complicated, and reduces freedom of choice.

Government health care sucks.
Then why do people get so upset at the prospect of Medicare cuts?

Anything the government gets thier hands in becomes infinitely more complicated
Like the military? Farm subsidies? Bank bailouts? Oil, gas, and coal subsidies? National Parks?

and reduces freedom of choice.
So you would rather pay more for health care to ensure corporate profits (who also limit choices).

... and whatever you do, DON'T BUY CORONA BEER.

Whew,

That is going around more than one would think. But anyhow. they are closing schools in NYC where I just came back from....

"We are writing to inform you that there is a suspected case of coronavirus in our community," the school wrote in an email signed by the principal of SAR, Rabbi Binyamin Krauss. "We are in touch with the New York City Department of Health and are following their guidelines."

The co-educational school, which describes itself as "modern Orthodox," informed parents that as of Tuesday, the closure was only for "precautionary" reasons and that parents should "remain calm."

Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler directed the Young Israel of New Rochelle to halt all services on Tuesday until further notice due to the possibility of COVID-19 exposure connected to the man who tested positive today. Congregants who were at services at the synagogue on February 22 or at a funeral and bat mitzvah at the synagogue on February 23 must quarantine themselves until March 8 at the very earliest...

Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference on Tuesday that a man who lives in the New York suburb and works in Manhattan tested positive for the novel coronavirus, adding that the 50-year-old man had an underlying respiratory illness and is hospitalized. He added that the patient had not traveled to countries considered to be major locations of the outbreak, but had visited Miami recently."... Jewish man confirmed as 2nd NY coronavirus case, day schools closed

Pay less? Do they really?
Ever notice how much cheaper your medical bill is if you pay in cash?
I don't know the solution, but it's not more government involved. Obamacare should have taught us that.
Why should a business not make money, BTW? Are large corporations inherently evil?

I don't know the solution, but it's not more government involved.

Obamacare greatly reduced the number of uninsured people. It's not that republicans don't want to do that;they just don't know how.

Obamacare should have taught us that.

Obamacare also eliminated the "pre-existing" game. And republicans never wanted that to end. A person caught in that could not change jobs without losing his health insurance. It was a boon to employers.

Why should a business not make money, BTW?

Charging what the market will bear for life-saving health care strikes most Americans as despicable. Go figure.

Are large corporations inherently evil?

Corporations are amoral. They aren't people; it's wrong to expect moral behavior from them.

They are run by people. We should indeed expect moral behavior from them, in fact, we should demand it.

That requires law. For an organization of men will behave differently than an individual man.

God isn't going to vote. God gave dominion over the earth to man. If a nation wants a king, God says okay have a king. If a nation wants a democracy, God says okay again. I wouldn't say every ruler is hand picked by God.

Hosea 8:4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.
Now don't make me quote the verse about God raising up kings (Daniel 2:21). Then someone will call God a liar or a hypocrite, and someone will have to reconcile all scripture.

“I want to talk to the Trump supporters for a moment. I don’t know who you are, and I don’t know why you like this guy,"
..."He's a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot," Graham continued. "He doesn't represent my party. He doesn't represents the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for. ... He's the ISIL man of the year."
Lindsey Graham, speaking of Donald Trump

See above; even his defenders know better. Lindsey has recently submitted and kissed Trump's ring, but the above is what he thought before Trump took over the party. He sneered at Trump until he realized his job depended on being Trump's lap dog.
Quotable. Proves you don't know the meaning of the words "supporters" or "defenders."

Typical.

That's Lindsey Graham speaking. Take it up with him. He's a prominent Trump defender, as you would know if you happened to notice his conduct during Trump's impeachment.

And yet in a moment of candor: "He's the ISIL man of the year."

Are you aware that virus strains are not the same every year?

True of every virus. Also true of the human genome, squirrels, fish, bacteria, etc. It's how DNA works. Always changing. But it's unusual when it changes enough to be a new species. Hence the "novel coronavirus."

Different name. Different strain.

(sigh) The big problem is that new kinds of virus are often initially a lot more virulent than the kind from which they evolved. Because it's in the virus's best evolutionary strategy to not be so virulent as to reduce transmission from person to person, they tend to attenuate over time, as less-damaging but equally-infectious strains start to predominate.

Both "viruses."

I mean, after all... the common cold and smallpox are "both viruses." What's the big deal?

Yep. See what happens to people who sleep through their high school biology classes?

Yes. Medicare's overhead is about 2%, whereas private insurance runs at over 12%.

Ever notice how much cheaper your medical bill is if you pay in cash?
Can't say that I have.

I don't know the solution, but it's not more government involved. Obamacare should have taught us that.
Other countries pay less and get better outcomes. I'm not willing to ignore that just because some people don't like government.

Why should a business not make money, BTW? Are large corporations inherently evil?
I never said they shouldn't. I just pointed out how weird it is to see some people willingly paying more for health care for profit.

Duh!
The influenza virus is not the same virus as the corona virus. They're not different strains of one another. You can't just say "they're both viruses" and try and compare them or treat them the same.

Remember during the 2016 campaign when Trump said he had a health care plan that would cover everyone, cost less, and provide better care? Wonder whatever happened to that?
