Yep, that's what Jesus said. The question remains of WHEN. Did she commit fornication before the marriage, or after.
Why would the blame be on the woman alone when a man can also violate the sanctity of marriage?

As to when did Jesus say this? That's not important. That he said so on more than one occasion is enough.
But I'm still not dating. LOL
As I said, it's your choice. :)

It isn't scripture.

I think there is a reason that the verse differentiates between porneia (fornication) and moicheuó. (adultery)
Because porneia (fornication) happens before marriage and moicheuó (adultery) happens after marriage.

So what is the word Jesus used?

The King James translation is the hero on this one.
Instead of translating porneia as "sexual immorality" (a broad term) it translates it as "fornication" the narrower specific term.
And that's the one that makes the most sense to me. Especially considering the cultural and legal aspects.

Matthew 19:8-10 KJV
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives:
but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication,
and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

Me too now that we cleared up the verse in Matthew. I don't believe in remarriage after divorce either; it must be a death. I've been divorced twice so that's another reason I don't want to date.

It seems to me that the church has done a lot of damage with its misunderstanding of this scripture.

I am very glad you posted this. Matthew 19 never set right with me, and now I know why. And Matthew 5:32 didn't change the meaning of Matthew 19 either.

It was not brilliance when it was in error.
The exception clause is adultery.
except for sexual immorality,

Anyone who divorces, except on the grounds of adultery and remarries is an adulterer.
Do you suppose that what Jesus said is best to be found in the original Greek, or in the English translation?

Were you Christian during the first marriage?
In name only and so was he. There are lots of "Christians" in the Church who are not born again like us. 6 months after the divorce he got filled with the Spirit and born again. And about a year or so later I was too. He was a Nashville recording artist and the divorce really shook him up, and he dropped show-biz and became a singing evangelist.

I wanted to ask you what version of the Bible uses adultery as in your version of Mt. 5:32. Or did you write that from memory? I looked at all of them on found only one. All the rest used the fornication and sexual impurity. In @St. SteVen 's belief I found that in the old versions before the modern versions of today one was very clear and used "unchasity." That would have made it clear that it was due to her not being a virgin as promised by the father of the bride.

fornication /fôr″nĭ-kā′shən/

noun

  1. Sexual intercourse between people who are not married to each other, especially when considered as a sin.

Ah, the dance of words in the linguistic ballroom! Fornication, my dear audience, is a term that swirls with historical and moral nuances. It's not just a word; it's a concept that has waltzed through cultures and moral frameworks.
Quoting the biblical notes: As the Apostle Paul once wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:18, "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body." A divine choreography of caution, if you will.
Now, let's add a touch of linguistic humor: Fornication, a term that often tiptoes through the corridors of moral judgments. It's like the uninvited guest at the linguistic party, raising eyebrows and prompting hushed conversations.
But fear not, for in the grand linguistic ballroom, words waltz through meanings, and interpretations dance with cultural contexts. Fornication, a term laden with societal echoes, beckons us to ponder the intersections of language, morality, and the dance of human relationships.
So, my linguistic dance partners, let's twirl through the lexical intricacies and savor the symphony of meanings that each word brings to the grand ballroom of communication! #LinguisticWaltz #WordPlayLaughs #DanceOfMeanings

As has been explained earlier, premarital sex according to the Bible is fornication. Sex.
Sex is fornication.

When someone is married and has sex with someone not their spouse that is adultery.
The only grounds for divorce in a marriage,as scripture says.

Because sex for those who are unmarried, single, has no relationship to adultery or divorce.

In short the declaration that Jesus did not say adultery is grounds for divorce is false. As we read in scripture.

And this means, if a woman divorced because of the offense of divorce she and her ex are able to remarry. Because that is not considered adultery.

Because the act of betrayal, fornication, sex, with another person while they were married to one another, is adultery.
And therefore divorce is allowed.

Any other grounds for divorce is not stated in Scripture. And as such, though divorced,of either ex-spouse remarried, that is considered Adultery. Because the marriage covenant can only be broken for one offense,Adultery. I.E. sex with someone not our spouse.

Yes, but seeing as my first husband and I were not saved at the time, it would have been forgiven, so I could marry as if for the first time. At least that is how I viewed it.

I know all the loopholes, but the holiness of God says otherwise, and when I read this OP and how it jelled with the Law is why I believe it is what God meant. BTW, do you have Scripture on remarriage after divorce? Many people assume things just because there is nothing written.

What is next is getting teenagers to stop having sex before marriage. I used to equate dating with sex and visa versa. That is why I wished that I had access to a Christian author like Karen Kingsbury. And having long engagements to become each other's best friend and in God.

Maybe Romans 14 will apply. "Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves." The test would be if God still answers our prayers. I remember after my divorce from my first husband I was stranded in California and made a life there. When I was 33 and wanting to hurry up and find someone while I still could have children, I was on my way to church and God spoke to me and asked "Would it be okay if you never had children?" Then a sort of video played in my head of being an only child, hating babysitting, and I said "Yes, Lord." From then on I wasn't frantic, and I could zero in on listening to the sermon, instead of checking out all the men!

They are claiming that fornication is a broad umbrella term that actually includes adultery. Say what?
“Porneia”, the word used in the Greek writings, is a broader term, covering all sexual immorality.

At 1 Corinthians 6:9, Paul used a form of porneia, saying that those who practice it will not “inherit God’s Kingdom.”

Paul mentions adultery & homosexuality… he doesn’t specifically say bestiality.
Would it be wise to say that bestiality is ok, then? Or prostitution? No!

Porneia covers it.

Porneia is where we get the term pornographic. In the media, that’s anything sexual.

Have a good day, my cousin!

Do you then take the position that Jesus was approving divorce for the reason of sexual immorality?

Matthew 19:6 NIV
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
