Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good[sup]
[e][/sup] Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”
[sup]
17[/sup] So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good?[sup]
[f][/sup] No one
is good but One,
that is, God.[sup]
[g][/sup]
But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
[sup]
18[/sup] He said to Him, “Which ones?”
Jesus said, “
‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ [sup]
19[/sup]
‘Honor your father and your mother,’[sup]
[h][/sup] and,
‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”[sup]
[i][/sup]
[sup]
20[/sup] The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth.[sup]
[j][/sup] What do I still lack?”
[sup]
21[/sup] Jesus said to him, “
If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
No one believes it anymore when the Lord says it.
If a man follows the commandments, wishes to do good,
and doesnt justify himself by it, he will indeed see life.
If a man wishes to be like Jesus, he must follow him, both to death, and to new life.
Somehow we think God destroyed the law of righteousness, that man has to do good. Man is weak, but he can choose to do good. He wont be perfect, because he is weak and flawed, but if he remains in love, humble, and just, that man will be saved. (Or else the parable of the Good samaritan is an enemy to the Gospel!)
Christ did not come to destroy it, but to fulfill it. He has made a way, that the fulness of God may dwell in us by the new creation so that we might walk in the same life and power as Christ, being slaves to righteousness, the righteousness of God. Following Christ is not a way to take away the necessity of the law, but to fulfill perfectly. Man walks according to the Spirit, and against him there is no law (think of David eating the bread). But it doesn't nullify or destroy the rigtheousness of men.
