The danger of direct sunlight can be real, especially for certain people and during certain events.
If you decide to wear glasses and look up. Keep track of the manufacturer and remember damage from looking may take time before a physician is needed. Sometimes years.
Astronomers probably use a special telescope sensor. The sensor, like a camera, views the solar event instead of their eyes.
I don't know if a phone's camera would work, or glasses over the phone's camera would be more appropriate than risking retinal damage from a human eye. The human eye is not meant to look directly at the sun.
The pain felt in the eyes is a message to the human body that indicates damage has happened.
If you feel pain from a bright light source look away immediately.
