Faith is the hand which grasps the promise....and the promise is, I have your back.

2 things.
1i) If you don't believe in God, you don't live for Him.
2) If you don't believe that God is who He is, then you will not rely on His virtue to reproduce it in your own life.

Conclusion: Yes, it's impossible to please God without relying on Him for your righteousness. Some may do this subconsciously, by an inward faith that the Good is available to us when we live by our conscience. That is one form of responding to the Word of God, by responding to an unknown "voice" in our conscience.

But the best form of faith is conscious faith, where our knowledge of God enables us to recognize God's Word every day, and to thus live in His love every day. A lack of knowledge causes our attention to the Good to be in a very sketchy way.
